How'd you do at sCHool today son? (a work in progress, today the goalies)

~ ~ ~
Our own Steve kicked off the evaluations of this season's suckitude and found some selective stars that stuck out. (I'll repost his report card to kick off the comments). 4HFers, refresh as I'm doing this online exam  piecemeal. No Googling!

TeaCHer's Pet - Carey Price, one of the league's top tenders (regardless of the defence in front of him, sometimes totally absent), TFS™ is The Dude that will carry our team forward. Better than average numbers but needs to concentrate more, especially in the shootouts. The benefit of a new tutor in a Patrick Roy could help elevate his game to CHampion status. 85% (5% bonus for looking so fucking cool)

Likeable Substitute - Peter Budaj, when Budi called upon he did a good/very good job. A veteran that doesn't complain. Should be given a half dozen more games. 79%

Coming to sCHool? - If available, I draft Malcom Subban.

  1. Steve's stuff;

TFS - one of the top 5 goalies, hard to evaluate because he does not have the defense others are blessed with. He still lets in double the number of softies for a top 5. However still huge upside. Sign him for ten years Patrick. A-

ERWB - the greatest free agent signing ever? Yes. If Patrick believes the team will compete deep into the playoffs next year keep him, otherwise trade him now. He deserves to play for somethng. When your the number one man on a one line team, its no fun out there. A+

Patches - our only other genuine first line player. A+

DDD - a top smurf, our defacto number one center. Having two first line wingers does magnify his abilities, but so what.A

Superplexxe - a top second line center, but where are the second line wingers? A-

Giant - I hope he is not out of gas, take away his C and hope for the best. C

PFK - Takes way to many stupid penalties. However a budding superstar. With a coach that can greenlight his offence point a game is within reach. A+

Gorges - the new captian. A+

Vodkov - not enough data to grade

(Y)- a top 3rd pair man. Next year he needs to make a better first pass, and pick more spots to offend. But he gives Montreal a hammer, and for that A+

Lego - Shows flashes of brilliance, still potentially a first line center Next year he has to show what he really is, a shutdown man or a shutup man A

LeBrow - still some upside but not the great French hope. Maybe someone can teach him to skate, and he breaks out. B+

The Saint - top 3rd pair guy, 2nd pp team, A

Budda - great backup. Rebounds go so far they are not dangerous A

RBQ- I am not buying sell him D

BBJ - That wrap around goal may have saved his career. C+

Blood - he Lego and BBJ make a effective third/fourth shutdown line with enough offence to keep teams honest. B

White - could play without a stick and no one would notice, on the bubble. C-

Staubliz - keep him as a fourth liner, unfortuneatly we need a goon and he is not a defensive liability. A

The rest are interchange. We need two more goal scorers, what if we still had TiTs and Squid? Next year we would be a serious contender. I do not see that in the players we now have, and the free agent pool is shallow. I would blow up whats left of this team and everyone over thirty show them the door.

  4. TFS™ says he might get ankle surgery this summer.

Vodkov not going to play ay the Worlds.

Nail #1, #2 is big D kid Murray, Gmoe slips to 3rd, gCHuk 4th.

    1. Gchuk, and Radic Tarak both lack NHL speed. Gmoe has all the tools its just his heart thats in question. You take the best man available, and Murry may be it. If we could keep them all Tindordi, Beladeau, PFK and Murray would be a scary blueline. However the siren call of a big center has to be listened to. I say get Gmoe, and he can support some high scoring smurfs, of which we have two great ones in the pipeline.

Trade up to get Nail, failing that take Gmoe if he falls in your lap. He won't play next year but wtf, he's the big center they need. I like moe's idea, put a package together to get a mid 1st rounder and get Malcom. That'll light a fire under TFS' ass.

      Delete
    3. The case for the Nail over Gmoe is not airtight, its a OVE vs Malkin dejvu and Nail is not as attractive at this point as OVE was. If I was trading for a middle up I would go for Netflicks at 17 to 20. I am not in on Subban, first he is not a complete package compared to other years top goalie picks, second or actually first goal is our least need. Our 2nd pick in this draft is almost as good as a first pick, we could get really lucky.

Columbus may be very open to trade the first pick, lets say we offer Plex and Weber or Diaz. They want to keep Nash so a center to work with like Pleks may be very attractive. So we get Gmoe to replace Pleks in 2014, and the Nail to give us 20 goals this year. Pleks is wasted if he has no one to pass to. Giant is 33 years old!!

      Delete
    4. Points to Plexxe, now 30 years old, two years past prime. He spent 4 years in Hamilton and one year in Montreal before he really started contributing. Thats a four alarm fire going off in Hamilton, where the cupboard is bare. So it maybe 3 or 4 years before we have a contending group again. Has anyone every said trading Squid and TiTs for a bag of pucks fucked us for three or four years? Before Goat decided to blow up the team he should have checked to see what was on the farm.

@Steve, that is an intriguing plan, trading the little girl to get the Nail and then pluck Gmoe. I'm actually OK with that - until AK Bars Kazan throws $5 mil at each of them - tax free with Russian mob immunity. Then your parade is fucked.

  17. I don't know enough about the draft prospects to add much to the conversation, however I am slightly concerned about drafting another Russian with the first decent pick the Habs have had in years. I'm not bigoted in any way, I'm just gun shy given the experiences the Habs have endured in recent years. The Tits brothers have huge talent but didn't play for the Habs (for whatever the reasons are - coaches, systems etc...)...So has anyone thought about Brendan Gaunce as a possible first pick? Habs need a big centre - he's 6.2/215 and plays hard (over 100 points and 100 PIM in the past two seasons) - only 18 I know, so won't make an impact for a couple years most probably - but you never know...Any of you seen him play?

  18. I am with you on the Russian- Byelorussian concern. Add to that the rumors that Ovechkin's pre-game ritual involves cigarettes and vodka and you can really develop some apprehension. Gaunce looks interesting.
