  82. The Montreal Canadiens will have players representing Canada at the Olympics for the first time since Mark Recchi and Shayne Corson donned the Maple Leaf at the 1998 Games in Nagano. Reigning Norris Trophy winner P.K. Subban and three-time All-Star Carey Price both received calls from Team Canada’s brass on Tuesday morning informing them that they had been named to the 25-man roster heading to Sochi. Both have previously skated for Canada internationally;

Subban won back-to-back gold medals at the World Juniors in 2008 and 2009 and participated in Canada’s final game at the 2013 World Championships last spring. Price is also the proud owner of a World Junior gold medal, having led Team Canada to the top of the podium in Sweden in 2007.

Subban is third among all NHL defensemen in 2013-14 with 33 points in 44 games so far this year, also boasting a stellar plus-14 differential. The four-year NHL veteran is second in the league behind only Duncan Keith for power play points by a blue-liner, boasting three goals and 12 assists with the man advantage.

Currently second behind only Pittsburgh’s Marc-Andre Fleury with 20 wins so far in 2013-14, Price has a .928 save percentage in 35 starts this season to go with two shutouts. His 988 saves to date are also second in the league to Mike Smith’s 1,002.

Longtime Habs equipment manager Pierre Gervais and Canadiens director of media relations Dominick Saillant will also join the Canadian contingent at the Olympics in February.

The Toronto native has a solid international resume, having captured back-to-back gold medals at the 2008 and 2009 World Junior Championship, including a berth in the tournament All-Star Team in his second stint with three goals and nine points. He's also no stranger to playing on the larger ice surface that will be utilized in Sochi.

"I played on an Olympic-sized rink in junior for four years with Belleville," he explained. "It changes the game a little bit in terms of how much space and time you have out there."

    ReplyDelete

    1. yep, he spent his junior years on the big ice, I've been telling the haters on TSN for months - they all said he would be lost on international ice, but the jackasses kept repeating the same trash over and over.

  92. That said, Subban had a message for his critics: carry on, you’re helping.

“They’re the people who make me better, I hope they keep critiquing and finding things to talk about,” he said.

Subban’s first phone call was to his parents – who emigrated to Canada from the Caribbean – although the avalanche of congratulatory texts and voicemails has been overwhelming.

“I haven’t really had a chance to answer my phone . . . maybe I’ll just turn it off for now and savour the moment,” he said.

The generally stoic Price - whose trademark is laconic calm - said that even if it's not outwardly obvious, he's thrilled to bits to be going to Sochi.

"I don't even know how to express it, how excited I am. I may not show it physically, but it's overwhelming, I'm just really honoured," he said.

Price said his aim is to be Canada's starter, a goal he said is shared by Luongo and Smith.

"We all want to be the guy," he said.

Love the movie BTW. I'd give it a solid 8.5. DiCaprio is awesome. Also, Margot Robbie is simply scrumptious. The entrance she makes into the first bedroom scene left a big portion of the theatre audience literally gasping.

Good thing the leaf is in it's "soft" part of the schedule, according to heely and the rest of the cockroaches. That so-called "Winter Classic" might be the last win for "Canada's team" for a while. Go Captain Kirk!

    ReplyDelete
  101. TSN sucks, leaf suck, plain and simple. Even if the 'trip' was called, that doesn't erase Bernier giving the puck away for a goal, prince$$ scoring on his own net, having 5-1 PP, not being able to score with Bernier pulled. Will TSN ever tell the truth about the leaf? We all know the answer to that.
