  20. Nikita Scherbak player profile from Dobber Hockey

“A surprising early round candidate in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft Scherbak came out of nowhere. Going late (extremely late) in the CHL import draft, not much was expected of Scherbak and the Saskatoon Blades. Scherbak made it a strong point to introduce himself to the rest of the WHL in a big way with 78 points in 65 games, his rookie year. Scherbak is a large 18-year-old at 6’2″ and a lean 174 pounds. He is a hungry player and what some would call a coaches player. He wants to learn, he wants to absorb as much knowledge as he can, and he is very adaptable and has some of the best scoring ability in the draft. Scherbak plays with great physical intensity as he will hit, take a hit, strong arm, position, fight, battle, anything he can to protect the puck or create an opportunity. Another aspect of Scherbak’s game is his speed, he accelerates quickly, has a strong first stride and hits top speed in a short distance. His zone play is good at both ends and defensively he has played admirably on a subpar Blades team. Scherbak is truly unselfish and has excellent leadership quality, he wants to win and doesn’t care if he’s assisting, scoring, or defending. He has deadly accuracy and is incredibly creative, creating scoring chances in unlikely areas. Scherbak’s coachability is a great asset, his physicality, strength, and quickness would compliment a second-line scoring role. Scherbak’s versatility allows him to be an excellent option as a set up man and playmaker as well. Scherbak can use some bulking up but being a bit older and having decent size already he could probably step right into an NHL role.”

Some teams need to get to the cap floor which is why Josh may be in play. They have to insert Tin Tin and N8 in the NHL lineup as they have a bunch of junior and collegiate grads heading to Hamilton, plus they may want to bring Nygren back to North America and he doesn't care for Hamilton. Nygren has way more offensive upside than Josh and the Habs need some secondary PP options on the back end.

I'd like to see this D for next season:

    Vodkov (Y)
    PFK Tin Tin
    N8 Dream Weaver
    Nygren Plaid as spares.

The fans of other Canadian teams (particularly the Leafs) would not be likely to vote for Subban, no matter how good he is, and no matter how Canadian he is. Bergeron is Canadian, but he plays for a team in the U.S., which in this case works for him. Not only does he play for the Bruins, one of the most popular NHL teams in the United States, but remains proudly French Canadian.

Many teams are way below the cap floor. They are sitting back waiting for players with big cap hits but smaller payouts to fall into their laps. Example: Spezza, $7mil cap hit, $4mil payout.

I'm kind of thinking Gorges may end up with a team in that situation, Florida and Buffalo come to mind.... and he would be a good veteran to help the young guns on those teams.

MB must be trying to find a winger to replace Vanish... err Panic, I mean Vanek. The only two guys on the leaf that might fit the bill would be JVR and Loophole.

      Delete
    2. Maybe JVR, but isn't Loophole injury prone? Though his does have beautiful eyes. On that note, what the hell have the leafs done with Staubitz?

      Delete
    3. I do not like Loophole, apparently JVR was going to Florida for the number one. Abvout 10 teams are in full tank mode for Conner and Gorgus is a great play for keeping the attutude during the tank, and mentoring players to come out of the tank, and his cap hit is very high considering his on ice activities. Which is a perfect tank commander.

  48. Not sure how this works, but if I understand correctly, DGMB will have to make PFK a qualifying offer just to have the right to match another team's offer?

By giving those players qualifying offers, the Penguins reserve the right to match any offer one of them might receive from another club, or to receive compensation if they opt against matching that offer.

  51. Montreal Canadiens defenceman Josh Gorges expressed his shock and disappointment on Monday with the news that the team is trying to trade him.

TSN Hockey Insider Bob McKenzie reports that Gorges, who has played eight seasons with the Canadiens, is on the trade block after the club asked him to waive his no-trade clause to facilitate a deal with the Toronto Maple Leafs.

"I want people to know that I never wanted to leave Montreal," he said in interviews with Dave Stubbs of The Montreal Gazette and J-F Chaumont of Le Journal de Montreal on Monday. "I have never asked for a trade - this is (general manager) Marc Bergevin's call. I am in shock."

Gorges, acquired in a trade with the San Jose Sharks in 2007 (along with a first-round pick that became forward Max Pacioretty) for defenceman Craig Rivet, has four years left on a six-year contract worth $3.9 million per season.

McKenzie reported on Monday afternoon that Gorges would not allow a deal with the Leafs - one of 15 teams on his no-trade list. In fact, none of the six other Canadian teams are on his list of permissible trade destinations.

"This is really hard to accept," Gorges added to both Montreal papers. "I have always given my heart to this team."

With 11 goals and 17 assists, many NHL scouts took notice this season and began talking about whether or not he’s ready for the next step. Half a dozen teams believe he is. Allan Walsh, a name we’re all familiar with, the agent to PA Parenteau and Jaroslav Halak also represents Sekac and had this to say:

Bob McCowan can certainly understand it. He ripped the leaf to shreds last night on his show calling them losers who have perfected the art of losing. He said several times: why would anyone want to play here?

All the best to #26 Josh Gorges, an undersized warrior with a big heart who played to the best of his abilities and gave his all to the Canadiens plus stayed true to his loyalties by giving the leaf the finger, unlike Douch$arek who listened to the siren call of the almighty dollar.

Good luck to Josh and Gio in Buffalo, except for five games a year.

I like what MB has done so far. Manny Malholtra, great on winning faceoffs, veteran checker with some size who takes over the 4th line. Tom Gilbert, a right hand shot and has more offensive upside than Josh. MB created cap space by trading Gorges and letting Gio walk and stiffened up his D with MM and TG and hung on to Weaver. PAP will help Max and DD. It's all good.

I wouldn't be surprised to see SuperPleXXXe picked as the new Captain. Vodkov doesn't want it and PFK is too young. And flashy. And not signed yet.

    Gilbert 31 6-3, 206
    Parenteau 31, 6-0, 193

MB has managed to more or less replace what he gave up for the Vanek rental. Sekac by all accounts seems closer to playing in the NHL than Collberg and is even bigger. The Gorges deal replaces the 2nd we lost. Deft work.

McSplooge refuses to acknowledge the Habs may be a conference or division threat. He likes the Lightning, whom the Habs destroyed in 4 straight in the playoffs. Boston has been sitting watching the proceedings because THEY HAVE NO CAP SPACE!

I believe the Habs have a good chance to repeat a 100 point season. They've actually upgraded the positions they lost players at and only have two smurfs left on the team, DD and KidG. Once they get Lego and PFK re-signed It's not a bad looking squad especially if Price stays healthy.

    2. Our next Capetian can only be PFK if we sign him, to do otherwise is counterproductive. He gave a very honest interview to Ken Dryden. He has an ego bigger than Quebec, but he has the skills of Ontario to back it up. Its a new world out there, and love him or hate him I appreciate the PFK is just letting it all hang loose.

  85. Giant and Gorgus bleed Red White and Blue and I thank them for their contribution, now can they dontate more on the way to Buffalo.Buffalo is in full tank mode and trying hard to reach the cap, they needed 20 mill as of Monday. For Gorgus to turn down Toronto to go the Barflo is astounding. He must even at this late stage of his career fear the blue and white disease.
Lets be clear, Buffalo is the third poorest city after Detroit and Cleveland in the mighty United States. If Hamilton scared Nyqull back to Sweden , Buffalo would have sent him to Iceland with a Zombie defense package. New York State is no tax haven so its not a money issue.

Vanish only for 3 years, ouch, he is going to have to live of the other $52 million if he winds down. Dream Weaver back and he was the prototype and old guy who can play and DGMB picked up a handful today and sprinkled Montreal with cup dreams as a result.

  92. There is way too much going on for even me to absorb intelligently. But one thing that stands out is CHicken signs a five year 20 million dollar contract with Edm. Thats four million a year for Broons fans. Four million does not buy you much anymore. So by this scale PFK will get an 8 yr contract for $14 million a year. You do the math.

Habs pick up maritimer Joey MacDonald to play goal for the Bulldogs. I don't think MB is done yet with re-tooling. Toker will have to go back down but has to clear waivers. I suspect he'll get traded along with MoenMan and a D-man for another scorer.

Aaron Ward of TSN reports the right winger is believed to have whittled his list of teams down to five or six, including the San Jose Sharks, Boston Bruins, Montreal Canadiens and Tampa Bay Lightning.

Vrbata, 33, scored 20 goals and added 31 assists in 80 games for the Coyotes last season; his best years, however, have come in the desert, with stints in Carolina, Chicago and Tampa yielding limited results.
