Superb! Who is the youngster in the shot with him - 8 from end? I used to have that picture of Dryden, Le Gros Bill, the Big M - that was my first Stanley Cup as a Habs fan. I remember my dad gave it to me - not sure where it came from but I remember keeping it in my room for years in a folder where I put my ticket stubs...
ReplyDeleteNot sure who the young boy is. The 1971 Cup was my first 'real' fan experience.
DeleteSo it happens that the young "boy" is actually Nancy Greene...
DeleteLove the classy Stanley Cup blazers in the parade pic.
ReplyDeleteYour witness protection squad is going to be pissed with you btw - all those years of anonymity blown in one big emotional lapse!
ReplyDeleteThXXX Bro, I'll be OK (I have protection, er, a great lawyer).
DeleteExtremely well done, moeman.
ReplyDeleteA day or 2 before he died, I watCHed a movie called 'Pour Toujours les Canadiens" whiCH I picked a during the summer. I was expecting it to be the history of the Canadiens but there was also a story line to it and the Colisee Jean Beliveau where a fan placed the scarf on his statue pictured above was a part of it. Not to give too muCH away, but this movie had me in tears. Maybe I'm just getting too soft. Well, if you have a CHance, look it up and stay with it.
ReplyDeleteOh, he is also in it.
DeleteIs that Nancy Green?
ReplyDeleteYup
DeleteNice Tribute, another small mark in the huge outpouring of love and respect for the great man.
ReplyDeleteWow! What a great tribute to #4. I love this blog which is a continuation of the Four Habs Fans started by the esteemed HF29 and his colleagues and the people who post here. If the Canadiens manage to win a Cup again we should all get together in Montreal to meet, have a drink and celebrate.
ReplyDeleteG Y F H G!!!!!
Count me in.
DeleteI'm in. I've yet to see a game in Montreal, so any trip will include at least one game for me.
DeleteA colleague of mine takes an annual trip with a buddy of his. There are 3 of them going 2nd week of Feb to see the Philthys, Oil and Laff - a nice 3 game homestand.
He's single...
Thx Bro.
DeleteNot sure about "esteemed", but I'm in!
DeleteSens fired the big-fat-bug-eyed-walrus.
ReplyDelete"Los Angeles Kings have cancelled their planned Stanley Cup visit to Ottawa's Parliament Hill on Wednesday out of respect for the passing of Jean Beliveau."
ReplyDeleteAbout fucking time.
ReplyDelete"We made line changes because we were due to make some changes. Sometimes, changing partners isn't a bad thing." - Michel Therrien
Lines at practice:
Trios // Forward Lines:
Pacioretty-Galchenyuk-Gallagher
Sekac-Plekanec-Andrighetto
Bournival-Desharnais-Parenteau
Prust-Malhotra-Weise
Weaver has a concussion
DeleteAnd has the league reviewed that incident?
DeleteNo calls after being boarded 2 games in a row, maybe they were just waiting for 3 to do anything.
DeleteAnother beauty in a long line of commemorations. Wanna have some fun? Mssr Beliveau won't mind. Tell a Bruin fan how sad the passing of the greatest #4 to ever play the game is. 100% of the time you will get a version of "I DIDN'T KNOW BOBBY ORR DIED?!". That's a guarantee. Scientifically proven as I've done this 3 times and received that exact response 3 times.
ReplyDeleteGreat news about the line changes! Hope they stick. A little something to celebrate. Sorry - just a quick parody that could probably use some fixin', but I should probably do some work instead.
ReplyDeleteAs the snow flies
On a cold and gray Zurich mornin'
A poor little baby Hab is born
Andrighetto
And this Habs fan cries
'cause if there's one thing that he don't need
it's another diminutive forward’s speed
Andrighetto
People, don't you understand
the child needs a helping hand
or he'll grow to be a useless young man someday
Take a look at DDD,
are they too blind to see,
do MB&MT simply turn their heads
and look the other way
Well the world turns
and a hungry little boy with a net presence nose
plays in the Bell Centre as the cold wind blows
Andrighetto
And his hunger burns
so he starts to score at night
and he learns how to steal (pucks)
and he learns how to fight
Andrighetto
Then one night in desperation
the young man breaks away
He buys a stick, steals a puck,
tries to score, and holy fuck!
And his mama cries (tears of joy)
As a crowd gathers 'round a useless young man
DDD’s face down on the ice without a plan
cuz of Andrighetto
As Mrs DDD’s young man dies,
on a cold and gray Quebec mornin',
another tiny Hab is born
Andrighetto

great one, I guess that mean he gehhto for sure.
DeleteHere is another one. I disagree with the sentiment but it makes me laugh.

Entire #Canucks team paid respects to Jean Béliveau at Bell Centre this morning
ReplyDeleteMax Pacioretty used the word "stale" to describe his line, said change is a fresh start: "People knew what our line was up to."
ReplyDeletePacioretty on Desharnais: "I hope he goes with his new line and makes me look like the dead weight on the line."
Line changes ... woa ... be still my beating heart.
ReplyDeleteG Chuk in the middle ... woa ... radical thought.
DDD Demoted ... too bad. Everybody would like him to succeed.
But he wasn't.
Bye Bye Bug Eyed Walrus. We won't miss ya.
I'm getting impatient for a return to the glory of the beginning of the year.
Maybe we weren't that good, but we are certainly not this bad.
Go Habs
DDD 51 games without a goal 5 on 5, possibly MT was read the riot act.
Delete'bout time eh?!
DeleteYou know how in a horror movie the hero shoots the monster, then turns his/her back and the monster is not dead. If fear that is what is going on here. empty has gone from not good enough to play center in the NHL to first line center in 48 hours. We will see. Flip Forsberg from the same draft class has been able to putt it off., as a winger. I am afraid gCHuck is being set up so the love child can be seen as the only choice.
DeleteCanadiens will keep Jean Beliveau's seat as pictured above for the season.
ReplyDeleteSmart and classy.
DeleteNathan Beaulieu est rappelé // recalled by the Canadiens.
ReplyDeleteYou posted too soon. Bo is not comming up. In the lastest flash of magic, DGMB is bringing Nic Lindstrom out of retirement. He will be suiting up against fellow Swede Sendins of Tuesday.

Fantastic montage Maurice. This is by far the best blog out there.
ReplyDelete1971 was also my first real fan experience. The first game I ever listened to was 1970 final regular season game when we need to score 5 goals to make the playoffs. Pulled the goalie with 10 mins left and down 5-2, and I instantly became a fan.We lost 10-2, and missed the playoffs, but I was hooked on the Habs.
Count me in on coming to Montreal to meet and celebrate a Stanley Cup
Merci lehab.
DeleteI'm in if Moey is. ; )
In.
DeleteI will make the trip back too! Go Habs go!!
DeleteAdded the Guy Lafleur paying his respects pic.
ReplyDeletePowerful image. Left a lump in my throat.
DeleteTeam's back home. Time to start winning some games for The Captain.
Genuine, raw emotion.
DeleteThe image of Guy Lafleur stopped me in my tracks. "To you from failing hands we throw the torch..."
ReplyDeleteAnother analyst, Norman Flynn, while he didn't name MT directly, he said the latest string of losses fall on the coaching staff.
ReplyDeleteI still think the loss of Gallant left a hughe hole.
I know what Marc is doing is for the best of the team. If I force his hand, I know he'll make room for me."-Beaulieu
ReplyDelete"We'll play for him tonight. He represents the soul of the Habs"- Malhotra about tonight's game.
ReplyDeleteI believe Malholtra, it's the rest of them that I'm not so sure about. Seriously, they're 0-2 wearing number 4 on their helmets. For shame.
Delete"Switching lines forces communication between the guys."- Therrien.
ReplyDeleteTranslaion: My job is on the line.
N8 will play tonight.
Watch and see - if the line changes don't work within the first 20 minutes, DD and Patches will be back together to start the 2nd period. AND he'll continue to get stupid PP minutes
DeleteSo true.
DeleteHe should have put gCHyuk at centre in every pre-season game for the last few seasons and then ease him in. He just doesn't develop the young talent at all.
Pre-game tribute to monsieur Beliveau will be very emotional. What a pillar of strength from mme. Beliveau & family to be able to shake the hand of each and every fan who paid their respects at the Bell Centre. May you rest in peace, heaven has come to earth to bring an angel home.
ReplyDeleteSeeing as the CH will be offering their tribute to Mr. Beliveau at tonight's game, this open thread will do the same. GYFHG!

They better come out killing dead things in the first. Just sayin'.
ReplyDeleteVodkov is engaged. Discuss how this will/won't affect his game.
ReplyDeleteNewly so? It will put a spring in his skates.

Hi All! Outstanding tribute moe. That "Maurice" fellow with #4 is one sharp-looking dude
ReplyDeleteThx 29, if I recall that is circa 2001ish, Mr. Beliveau is tall.
DeleteRe the big F4HF party in Montreal when the Habs win the Cup, yes! It shall be at my house! By the time the Habs win a Cup, I will own a house!
ReplyDeleteWhat time is the pre-game tribute and which network is showing it in full?
ReplyDeleteAll I've CHecked out is 19h30 #4 tribute, 19h37 puck drop on RDS.
DeleteThank God RDS is covering this one, I don't think the mediots would serve it justice. The pre-game is supposed to be short respecting the wishes of the Beliveau family.
DeleteI'm streaming rds on he laptop and I have game centre on the iPad...some can compare I spose...I will let you know. What I can tell yo is this...Benoit brunet is still a fucking dick! He would have blown DDD if he was on the hockey 360 panel earlier...it was sad! They won't leave it alone. DDD is some sort of fucking God...just becaus he is pure Laine ...makes no sense to me.
DeleteRe the line changes, IT'S ABOUT FUCKING TIME. A real coach would have done something 4 games ago
ReplyDeleteHungaria Brut (gift) and CHicken parm.

DeleteJust got caught up.
ReplyDeleteMy friends, MT obviously has an addiction problem. He is addicted to DD. After over a year of interventions he finally removed him from the 1st line, but he still refuses to take him off the PP. And because of his crap coverage, the Nucks scored a SHG. And yet DD is right out there next shift. The only answer is to remove one of these co-dependents. It's just sad to watch.
Its fireless wagon hockey
ReplyDeletePING
ReplyDeleteAUUUGHHHHH
ReplyDeletewell we're not losing
ReplyDeleteJust caught up again. Something I say way too often during every Habs game:
ReplyDelete"HOW THE HELL DID THAT NOT GO IN!"
I bet the guys were really pumped when they got that 5on3. "Oh yeeeeeaaahhh!!! Now we get to pass around the puck and not take shots even more!!!"
ReplyDeleteWhich is essentially what happened.

DeleteGet Lego back, waive DDD and I like this team!
ReplyDeleteNow to CBS! Thx everyone!
ReplyDeleteSo the Habs (38 pts) are 1 point back of TB, DET and PIT for 1st in the East...but the Islanders are about to win again and take sole possession of top spot with 40 points.
ReplyDeleteYou read that right. In about 5 minutes the Islanders will be the best team in the NHL. No, this is not 1982.
Oh, hold on. Minny with 2 goals in 20 seconds, tied late now.
DeleteMinny scores again. Guess we won't see the Islanders at the top after all.
DeleteThanks everyone.
ReplyDeleteBonsoir à tous.
Bonsoir monsieur Beliveau. Reposez bien et merci pour tout ce que vous nous avez donné.
Just finished watching the game on dvr. Fantastic - loving these new lines. Like 29 said, just waive DDD when Lego's back and it's perfect. Great to see N8 back. Sorry Dreamweaver and Bryan you'll never get a nickname because you don't deserve one Allan had to get concussed/flued for this to happen.
ReplyDeleteThough OMG was a turnover machine. That's Old Man Gonchar btw.
Tired. To bed.
Ok, I was a bit rushed earlier and my internet here at work kept cutting out.
ReplyDelete1) Great work on this post, moe.
2) Just watched the ceremony. Unfortunately, kids in the cooking room across the hall were chopping onions, either that or my allergies were acting up again.
3) Oh god, we're all going to die one day. I'm going to die one day. What have I done to make this world a better place? Oh god, my parents are going to die one day, probably before me. I should call them. I should visit more. I should move back home. WOULD THOSE DAMN KIDS STOP CUTTING THOSE ONIONS!
4) I am in for the Stanley Cup party, though this spring would be inconvenient for me. I'm about to finish my contract in early August and then either move to China or back to Montreal (applications pending at universities in both places).
5) I may be overly emotional due to the whole quitting smoking thing. Had my first real test last night at quiz night with all my teammates puffing away. Resistance was not futile, I got through it easier than I thought. But I may now be channeling my murderous rage into weeping melodrama.
GO HABS GO!
Moeman - you are to be congratulated for this hread...as well as all the others - this one was particularly poignant. I watched the full ceremony and the first period last night - I was confident when I called it a night that I would awake to a victory. I will watch the full game later but from all accounts it sounds like it was a good one. GCHuk is a centre - let him stay there. Beaulieu is a D man with some wheels so let's keep him as well. I don't quite know why Allen was brought in, especially with the talent in Hamilton, but the key in all this is player management - not exactly the coach's forte! So that brings me back to the main problem - and one that the Habs have had since...(as they won last night I will not go on...for now at least.!) Go Habs Go!!
ReplyDeleteMerci. I do it for the FHF team KmaXXX.
DeleteI tried to be strong during the tribute, but I broke down. What a wonderful woman mme Beliveau is, a pillar of strength. It must have been so hard to be next to his empty seat.
ReplyDeleteIt was so classy of PleXXXe to give the puck to Dr. Mulder to give to mme Beliveau. I am so happy they won the game for Jean Beliveau and for mme Beliveau.
moeman, I think I told them to shut the OLE up the same time you did.
ReplyDeleteGarbutt has a hearing, I hope he gets the book thrown at him since the refs let him off scott-free for boarding Weaver. Maybe if DoP did their job then they wouldn't have to see him now.
ReplyDeletePleXXXe giving the puck to mme. Beliveau.
ReplyDeletehttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v2ImhzN7Pg8#t=12
“Right away, when we stepped on the ice, you could feel it,” Plekanec said. “I’ve never heard such a quiet arena. You could feel the respect for the person Jean Béliveau was.”
ReplyDeletehttp://montrealgazette.com/sports/hockey/nhl/montreal-canadiens/in-the-habs-room-2
"He was just great to be around," Bettman told reporters before the service. "And he's going to be terribly missed."
ReplyDeleteHe was asked about suggestions that the Conn Smythe Trophy could eventually be named after Beliveau.
"We've been focused more on his passing and that loss and celebrating his life and I know at the appropriate time we'll focus on what is a remembrance fitting for someone like Jean Beliveau," Bettman said.
I watched all of the funeral ceremony this evening and I was doing fine ...right up until Yvan Cournyoyer started to break down. I lost it then and almost did again during Ken Dryden's speech...but then, like I have done so many times after reading or listening to him, I smiled. It all made sense. And, as usual, Ken Dryden put what I was feeling into words that made me smile. Merci Jean!
ReplyDeleteRoy and Sakic were on their way to the funeral and were on a plane for over 20 minutes when there was a problem with the plane and they had to go back to Denver.

ReplyDeleteLego (only) out 1-2 weeks.
ReplyDeletePFK is out with the 'flu-like' symptoms.
ReplyDeleteHabs loan de la Rose to Sweden for World Junior Championships.
ReplyDeleteSince all's quiet in Habsland here's a hypothetical question for 4HFers to have some fun with. The stupid fucking leaf are on a bit of a roll lately and their poor tortured fans are no doubtedly getting visions of sugar plums dancing in their heads so... Let's say they make the playoffs and go on a run like the Habs did last spring and make the final four but don't win a Cup. Mike Babcock becomes a free agent. Do stupid fucking leaf management fire Belinda anyway so they can hire Babcock? Are they that shallow? I vote YES!
ReplyDeletethe leaf do not make the playoff. I realize hockey players are mostly not rhodes scholars. But for Bernier to be at a Mandela memorial event and not know who the fuck the guy was, thats a portal. Your too stupid to exist so the equibiburialm will take a car for him.
DeleteInteresting, during last game when the war room sounded the horn to review if TFS stopped the puck or it crossed the line and IF it did, they blew it too late and counting the goal would have been in violation of the rules.
ReplyDeleteThough nothing would surprise me it they broke the rule and awarded a goal.
http://www.tsn.ca/talent/c-mon-ref-goal-can-never-be-awarded-after-play-resumes-1.157491
Worst refereeing in all pro-sports and that includes wrestling.
DeleteI am encouraged by the little things. As our friends over at HIO describe SuperPleXXXe scored a goal on a hockey play.Four players working together under pressure to produce a scoring chance instead of punting under pressure. WTF is wrong with this world and this team that this in not the first choice in any senario? Dumb and Chase, is for accountants who want to lose accountablity and gamble on probablity.
ReplyDeleteThe next big thing is that KidG with my help has been working on his shot. Fuck he can break plaster now at 1000 yards.
I hope DDD can find a legitimate role on this team. I am pulling for him and its easy because anyone can pull around a 140 lbls.
Cakes, cakes Cakes, you just can not buy something like this, and we did,
ETOP did a nice patches thing. Fuck he is wonderful.
PFK is just awesome and the best is yet to come.
Number four must have been more or less satisfied with this team. After decades of staring at futility, he saw something. More importantly players of our future knew this man. In pro sports where taking an asprin at the right time leads to victory having a big 4 forever stamped on thier hearts will make us invincible. Its war and we have the moral high ground.
Now the hopes and dreams of us all rest upon young gCHucks wide shoulders. The greatest part of his development was he had Le Gross Bill there. I know no one will ever come close, but I see so much upside, that today I feel joy, joy that the greatest Hab ever has a logical successor.
eMpTy has been killing PFK slowly and tortuously.
Delete*torturously*

ReplyDeleteIt was on purpose I did not complete the sequence. There is a message therel
http://thinkingaboot.blogspot.ca/2014/12/29-ways-to-lose-ele3ction.html
broon lose to Chicago, shaved ape's marks his return with another non-call pushing someone's face and sidenberg? puts Toewes' face into the board and takes him out of the game.
ReplyDeletehere's the hit.
Deletehttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yiaKyQCeb0w
What a classless, dirty, piece of shit organization that is. The best (worst?) part was the fans booing with Toewes gets up. Pieces of trash from top to bottom, that organization.
DeleteUgh, Canes score on themselves with 30 seconds left and hand the Bolts the 2 points.
ReplyDeleteLOLZ at the CotU media. Babcock didn't sign an extension with the Wings yet, therefore he's definitely headed to Toronto!
ReplyDeleteWhy in the world would Babcock want to go to Toronto? They're not a good team now and they aren't building into one. They have no young exciting prospects or all star players. And it's a pressure cooker there and no matter how good he is he'll be demonized by the media and fans within a year.
Now, I'm not saying he'll choose to go to Montreal. That's a pipe dream. However, it would make 100000x more sense. He's a McGill alum. He likes Price. He has commented on how classy and wonderful the city and organization are on multiple occasions. He would have a bunch of young d-men to mold (starting next year), along with a good mix of young and not as young but not old forwards. Habs will be contenders for a few years to come. Gets to follow in Scotty Bowman's footsteps (more).
Again, I'm not saying it'll happen. At all. Just saying it makes waaaaaaaay more sense than Toronto. In fact, I'd say Babcock going to about 25 other teams before Toronto makes way more sense. Hell, if the Wings continue doing what they're doing there's no reason he wouldn't stay put.
The Habs won't be allowed to hire another anglophone coach until QC gets a team. So first, Bettman needs to take a tumble from his NYC penthouse so Dryden can become Commish.
DeleteAgain, not saying it'll happen. But even the most extremist Frenchies would make an exception for Babcock. Him being a McGill alum would make it easier.
DeleteYou know who got S. Korean to the semis of the World Cup in 2002? Some hometown hero? A Korean-American? Nope! A Dutchman who didn't even bother trying to respect the customs or etiquette of this country, never mind learn the language. And you know what, Koreans (some of the most xenophobic recluses in the world, i.e. the Hermit Kingdom) LOVE him. He brought prestige to this country, even better while they hosted the damn thing.
Francophone Quebecers need to get over themselves. Winning is winning in any language.
Before one of the games last season he stopped in to McGill to drop off his annual donation cheque and they handed him another tie, which we know he wears for important games. I seem to remember something about the other tie had beer spilled on it during the flight from SoCHi - I think it was the tie. Tried to get TFS to have a couple too.
DeleteWanting a francophone coach just limits the talent pool and I can't understand how having the best coach would not be a priority. As for being a McGill alumni, well, I think that is perceived as an elite anglophone institution. Maybe if he attended uqam.
DeleteI'm a McGill alum (as I know 29 is, and perhaps more here). That pretty much makes me buddies with Babcock. I'll make a few calls. See what I can do.
DeleteMy daughter is also.
DeleteToday I was reading about Bowman, Babcock and other coaches and sometimes owners weren't willing to pay for their services. I know it's easy to see in retrospect (i.e. what do you mean the 1971 Habs weren't favoured to win the Cup?! Oh right, all those big names on the roster weren't superstars yet....sort of how it'll be in 20 years when people look back on this year's Habs with PK and gCHuck and KidG and Price...)
ReplyDeleteAnyway, that just symbolizes owners greed to me. Some coaches really do make the difference. It's a game of inches, of mistakes. If one guy can turn those around, even just a little, it's worth another zero. It's not like these owners are struggling. Habs are valued at over a billion as of last week. Throw an extra zero at Babcock. Get PK and Price to deliver the message.
But yeah, it's not going to happen. Or maybe the best thing for the Habs this year is to fail.........
I was listening to a recorded interview Melnick did with Beliveau replayed the other day and he was saying that Toe Blake was under such pressure, not only as a coach but he was also a 'travelling secretary', he was always alone on the road, on a train making sure the players all had rooms booked and tickets to travel. Beliveau said people probably would not know what a lonely life it was.
