  1. Superb! Who is the youngster in the shot with him - 8 from end? I used to have that picture of Dryden, Le Gros Bill, the Big M - that was my first Stanley Cup as a Habs fan. I remember my dad gave it to me - not sure where it came from but I remember keeping it in my room for years in a folder where I put my ticket stubs...

    1. Not sure who the young boy is. The 1971 Cup was my first 'real' fan experience.

    2. So it happens that the young "boy" is actually Nancy Greene...

  5. A day or 2 before he died, I watCHed a movie called 'Pour Toujours les Canadiens" whiCH I picked a during the summer. I was expecting it to be the history of the Canadiens but there was also a story line to it and the Colisee Jean Beliveau where a fan placed the scarf on his statue pictured above was a part of it. Not to give too muCH away, but this movie had me in tears. Maybe I'm just getting too soft. Well, if you have a CHance, look it up and stay with it.

Wow! What a great tribute to #4. I love this blog which is a continuation of the Four Habs Fans started by the esteemed HF29 and his colleagues and the people who post here. If the Canadiens manage to win a Cup again we should all get together in Montreal to meet, have a drink and celebrate.

  12. Another beauty in a long line of commemorations. Wanna have some fun? Mssr Beliveau won't mind. Tell a Bruin fan how sad the passing of the greatest #4 to ever play the game is. 100% of the time you will get a version of "I DIDN'T KNOW BOBBY ORR DIED?!". That's a guarantee. Scientifically proven as I've done this 3 times and received that exact response 3 times.

  13. Great news about the line changes! Hope they stick. A little something to celebrate. Sorry - just a quick parody that could probably use some fixin', but I should probably do some work instead.

    As the snow flies
On a cold and gray Zurich mornin'
A poor little baby Hab is born
    Andrighetto
    And this Habs fan cries
'cause if there's one thing that he don't need
    it's another diminutive forward’s speed
    Andrighetto

    People, don't you understand
the child needs a helping hand
or he'll grow to be a useless young man someday
    Take a look at DDD,
are they too blind to see,
do MB&MT simply turn their heads
    and look the other way

    Well the world turns
and a hungry little boy with a net presence nose
plays in the Bell Centre as the cold wind blows
    Andrighetto

    And his hunger burns
so he starts to score at night
and he learns how to steal (pucks)
and he learns how to fight
    Andrighetto

    Then one night in desperation
    the young man breaks away
He buys a stick, steals a puck,
tries to score, and holy fuck!
And his mama cries (tears of joy)

As a crowd gathers 'round a useless young man
DDD’s face down on the ice without a plan
    cuz of Andrighetto

As Mrs DDD’s young man dies,
on a cold and gray Quebec mornin',
    another tiny Hab is born
    Andrighetto

If fear that is what is going on here. empty has gone from not good enough to play center in the NHL to first line center in 48 hours. We will see. Flip Forsberg from the same draft class has been able to putt it off., as a winger. I am afraid gCHuck is being set up so the love child can be seen as the only choice.

1971 was also my first real fan experience. The first game I ever listened to was 1970 final regular season game when we need to score 5 goals to make the playoffs. 80. Ok, I was a bit rushed earlier and my internet here at work kept cutting out.

    1) Great work on this post, moe.

    2) Just watched the ceremony. Unfortunately, kids in the cooking room across the hall were chopping onions, either that or my allergies were acting up again.

    3) Oh god, we're all going to die one day. I'm going to die one day. What have I done to make this world a better place? Oh god, my parents are going to die one day, probably before me. I should call them. I should visit more. I should move back home. WOULD THOSE DAMN KIDS STOP CUTTING THOSE ONIONS!

    4) I am in for the Stanley Cup party, though this spring would be inconvenient for me. I'm about to finish my contract in early August and then either move to China or back to Montreal (applications pending at universities in both places).

    5) I may be overly emotional due to the whole quitting smoking thing. Had my first real test last night at quiz night with all my teammates puffing away. Resistance was not futile, I got through it easier than I thought. But I may now be channeling my murderous rage into weeping melodrama.

    GO HABS GO!

    ReplyDelete
  81. Moeman - you are to be congratulated for this hread...as well as all the others - this one was particularly poignant. I watched the full ceremony and the first period last night - I was confident when I called it a night that I would awake to a victory. I will watch the full game later but from all accounts it sounds like it was a good one. GCHuk is a centre - let him stay there. Beaulieu is a D man with some wheels so let's keep him as well. I don't quite know why Allen was brought in, especially with the talent in Hamilton, but the key in all this is player management - not exactly the coach's forte! So that brings me back to the main problem - and one that the Habs have had since...(as they won last night I will not go on...for now at least.!) Go Habs Go!!

As our friends over at HIO describe SuperPleXXXe scored a goal on a hockey play.Four players working together under pressure to produce a scoring chance instead of punting under pressure. WTF is wrong with this world and this team that this in not the first choice in any senario? Dumb and Chase, is for accountants who want to lose accountablity and gamble on probablity.

The next big thing is that KidG with my help has been working on his shot. Fuck he can break plaster now at 1000 yards.
I hope DDD can find a legitimate role on this team. I am pulling for him and its easy because anyone can pull around a 140 lbls.

Cakes, cakes Cakes, you just can not buy something like this, and we did,

ETOP did a nice patches thing. Fuck he is wonderful.

PFK is just awesome and the best is yet to come.

Number four must have been more or less satisfied with this team. After decades of staring at futility, he saw something. More importantly players of our future knew this man. In pro sports where taking an asprin at the right time leads to victory having a big 4 forever stamped on thier hearts will make us invincible. Its war and we have the moral high ground.

Now the hopes and dreams of us all rest upon young gCHucks wide shoulders. The greatest part of his development was he had Le Gross Bill there. I know no one will ever come close, but I see so much upside, that today I feel joy, joy that the greatest Hab ever has a logical successor.

    2. What a classless, dirty, piece of shit organization that is. The best (worst?) part was the fans booing with Toewes gets up. Pieces of trash from top to bottom, that organization.

  99. Ugh, Canes score on themselves with 30 seconds left and hand the Bolts the 2 points.

  100. LOLZ at the CotU media. Babcock didn't sign an extension with the Wings yet, therefore he's definitely headed to Toronto!

Why in the world would Babcock want to go to Toronto? They're not a good team now and they aren't building into one. They have no young exciting prospects or all star players. And it's a pressure cooker there and no matter how good he is he'll be demonized by the media and fans within a year.

Now, I'm not saying he'll choose to go to Montreal. That's a pipe dream. However, it would make 100000x more sense. He's a McGill alum. He likes Price. He has commented on how classy and wonderful the city and organization are on multiple occasions. He would have a bunch of young d-men to mold (starting next year), along with a good mix of young and not as young but not old forwards. Habs will be contenders for a few years to come. Gets to follow in Scotty Bowman's footsteps (more).

Again, I'm not saying it'll happen. At all. Just saying it makes waaaaaaaay more sense than Toronto. In fact, I'd say Babcock going to about 25 other teams before Toronto makes way more sense. Hell, if the Wings continue doing what they're doing there's no reason he wouldn't stay put.

    1. The Habs won't be allowed to hire another anglophone coach until QC gets a team. So first, Bettman needs to take a tumble from his NYC penthouse so Dryden can become Commish.

    2. Again, not saying it'll happen. But even the most extremist Frenchies would make an exception for Babcock. Him being a McGill alum would make it easier.

You know who got S. Korean to the semis of the World Cup in 2002? Some hometown hero? A Korean-American? Nope! A Dutchman who didn't even bother trying to respect the customs or etiquette of this country, never mind learn the language. And you know what, Koreans (some of the most xenophobic recluses in the world, i.e. the Hermit Kingdom) LOVE him. He brought prestige to this country, even better while they hosted the damn thing.

Francophone Quebecers need to get over themselves. Winning is winning in any language.

    3. Before one of the games last season he stopped in to McGill to drop off his annual donation cheque and they handed him another tie, which we know he wears for important games. I seem to remember something about the other tie had beer spilled on it during the flight from SoCHi - I think it was the tie. Tried to get TFS to have a couple too.

    4. Wanting a francophone coach just limits the talent pool and I can't understand how having the best coach would not be a priority. As for being a McGill alumni, well, I think that is perceived as an elite anglophone institution. Maybe if he attended uqam.

    5. I'm a McGill alum (as I know 29 is, and perhaps more here). That pretty much makes me buddies with Babcock. I'll make a few calls. See what I can do.

  101. Today I was reading about Bowman, Babcock and other coaches and sometimes owners weren't willing to pay for their services. I know it's easy to see in retrospect (i.e. what do you mean the 1971 Habs weren't favoured to win the Cup?! Oh right, all those big names on the roster weren't superstars yet....sort of how it'll be in 20 years when people look back on this year's Habs with PK and gCHuck and KidG and Price...)

Anyway, that just symbolizes owners greed to me. Some coaches really do make the difference. It's a game of inches, of mistakes. If one guy can turn those around, even just a little, it's worth another zero. It's not like these owners are struggling. Habs are valued at over a billion as of last week. Throw an extra zero at Babcock. Get PK and Price to deliver the message.

But yeah, it's not going to happen. Or maybe the best thing for the Habs this year is to fail.........

    1. I was listening to a recorded interview Melnick did with Beliveau replayed the other day and he was saying that Toe Blake was under such pressure, not only as a coach but he was also a 'travelling secretary', he was always alone on the road, on a train making sure the players all had rooms booked and tickets to travel. Beliveau said people probably would not know what a lonely life it was.
