  2. Signing this guy should be a priority, he is a BAMF who can score in bunches.

Vladimir Putin plays hockey with retired NHL-ers and scores 8 goals. I think the other team might just be pulling their punches a little bit.

  5. I just realized I can squezze in the latest Episode of Outlander before the game. This is what Fabio would have been on screen if he could have spoke good English. Its a Harliquen Romance with a bit of a political bent starring a Frau and an Mann that no one would push out of bed for eating crackers. To put it in 29 terms its hockey wives where there is no dyke but the realationship loses to the past.

Anybody notice the difference in this hockey at the WHC? That extra 15' of width allows some actual rushes up the ice. Some actual scoring chances off the rush. This looks like actual hockey. What a concept! Fuck you NHL and your "systems" and creativity crushing coaching.

With all due respect to Marc Bergevin, fuck eMpTy and his "system". This antiquated "dump and chase" is garbage to watch and in my humble opinion the Habs are better suited to play a possession game than a grinding defensive game. They have skilled players like PK, Pleks and gCHuk, even DD who are more than capable of carrying a puck through the neutral zone. Even ol' Gomer could carry the puck through the middle with speed, he just didn't know what to do after he got there.

Francois Gagnon made a good point in a video with Brian Wilde I saw today. MB said it was nearly impossible to acquire top line centers, it was only possible on PlayStaion. Gagnon pointed out that Jim Nill in Dallas manged to acquire not only Jason Spezza but also Tyler Seguin. You just have to be willing to pay the price. The only untouchable on the Habs would be Price, maybe PK.

    1. PatCHes said they play a style of hockey that is very 'taxing'. PFK discussing the PP said"

Montreal was expected to do well with the man advantage with skilled rearguards on the point like Subban and .
Subban said the power play was too predictable and needed more movement among the point men and the forwards.
"You need sometimes just to be mobile," he said. "Sometimes it's just being in positions teams don't expect you to be in.
"One thing I give Tampa credit for is that there's no lack of creativity on their power play. Their players obviously get off that leash to move around. I don't think there's any cemented structure on that power play. They've got skilled players and they move around the ice. They make plays, they change position, they read off each other."

Well, he seems to know what the problem is and maybe I read too much into it but I noted the words 'leash' and 'cemented structure' in PK's statement. Is that the players or the PP coach?

    Here are the two trades:

Boston and Dallas agreed to a seven-player trade Thursday, with the Bruins sending forward Tyler Seguin, forward Rich Peverley and defenseman Ryan Button to the Stars for forward Loui Eriksson and three prospects (Joseph Morrow, Reilly Smith and Matt Fraser).

In exchange for Spezza, the Senators received forwards Alex Chiasson, Nicholas Paul and Alexander Guptill, plus a second-round pick in the 2015 NHL Draft. The Stars also received forward Ludwig Karlsson.

Other than Loui Eriksson, Dallas gave up SFA for two top 6 elite centers.

If you're interested, here is an interview with Habs' former 1st round pick Terry Ryan about being coached by MT (audio):
    http://slapshotdiaries.com/tales-of-a-first-round-nothing/

I've read that Ryan also had his own issues, but as he says in the interview his excuse was that he was 20 years old. What's MT's? Just watching him scream at Lego on the bench and cut his minutes night after night, you have to wonder how much MT has really grown since the 90s.

Now, go see Mad Max. It is fucking amazing!

  17. Beautiful day on the golf course. My game sucked. But that's not new. Pretty sure I would have received the "most honest golfer" award today, shooting a 116. Ah well, more bang for my buck.

The M - regarding Dallas grabbing 2 worthy centres, i was thinking the exact same thing. Maybe, just maybe though MB doesn't want to show his cards and is actually in the market for a Malkin type player. Imagine Patches on the wing with Crosby! Because he'd have to be part of the package going the other way. And I'd rather Crosby, but...it ain't happening for sure. We're not leaf fans so we can admit just because a player was a fan growing up doesn't mean he will come to the Habs. Anyway, I got a feeling MB will try to make a big splash via trade and if not a giant blockbuster to get Malkin, then maybe with Chiarelli and the Oil. I pray he sees the need and finds a way to increase the offence.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I honestly can't see Malkin happening, but with the Habs' depth on defence and in goal (Fucale, for example), I could see them making a big deal with Edmonton. I think the new management there realizes they don't need all that young undeveloped talent up front and desperately need some help in the back end. I wouldn't be surprised to see Yakupov or, dare I say it, Eberle, coming to Montreal this summer. I also wouldn't be against it.

  21. So have you guys seen Mad Max yet? I just watched the trailer (for the first time....first dozen times actually) and can't wait to see it again in 3D. See, the theater gave me a coupon for two free popcorns and sodas on account of it being my birthday next week, but I had already bought my packmule worth of snacks when I got it. It's also $8 to see a movie here, they don't care if you bring in your own stuff and you can reserve your seats ahead of time. But I digress.

The point is, I'm not letting that coupon go to waste and while I've only ever seen one 3D movie (Avatar, I don't care what people say that was a goddman dreamworld of magic) I think Mad Max will be even awesomer with all that debris flying at my face. It seriously is the best movie I've seen in ages (loved Gravity, though).

And hockey...whatever. Who cares? Go Blackhawks, I hate you the least out of everyone left.

    1. Have not seen it yet, but will soon.. I agree with Avatar and Mad Max looks awesome, likely due to the fact the orginal creator is at the helm. The sad thing is that no one listened, and today we have the southeast reaching mad max levels of drought and pending mayhem.

In other apogliptic news I have looked at the prospect for the upcomming draft. At 26 we might has well give our pick to the leaft cause it going to be wasted. Not one center in the draft worth having, which means at least another decade of DDD because our talent tunnel at center collapases after gCHuck we at 21 is not a good enough center to outplay JDR a 19 year old defenceman.

    2. Oman, saw Mad Max in 3D yesterday. Absolutely loved it. Non-stop action, interesting story line and gorgeous to look at. I read that all the vehicles were actually in working/running/crashing order. The title Mad Max: Fury Road is a giveaway as to the gist of the movie.

    3. It's mostly all practical effects, very little CGI. I just read an article about how SPOILERS (It's all visible in the trailers though) those guys on the long sticks, I forget their names, who bounce in and out of the cars, the director said it would be impractical to do it with moving cars so he told his head stunt guy to try filming it stationary and they would make it move post production. But then the stunt guy sent the director (I'm terrible with names) a video of them doing it with moving cars and he jumped out of his seat.

END SPOILERS I'm not even huge into big action flicks like this, but it was so fucking awesome! Throw in the fact that it's probably the biggest feminist film in years, this is an instant classic people will refer to for years.

Also, I can do Mad Max. I just need to find my Furiosa for our Halloween costumes to be complete. Finally, a really badass couples costume!

  38. Unrelated to BabLaff, I would like to take a moment to speak of David Letterman.

Dave's formative years on NBC coincided with my formative years as a teen-young adult. Back then there were literally 7 channels (3 US networks, PBS, and CTV and CBC). There was some good TV on, but there was nothing like Late Night. It had a comedy edge you just did not see anywhere. As a middle class Jew, I was straight-laced and "normal". Staying up late (after my bedtime) and sneaking down to watch Dave in the den warped me, in a good an positive way. In a sense, that humour sees a direct line to the humour that became FHF. So in a way, you and I are all here because of David Letterman.

    Goodbye and good luck, Dave.

    1. Perfect!

I've lived a similar Dave experience with a few earlier-on added years of daytime Dave. I use to blame Dave for all my late night TV viewing, only to realize that I enjoyed staying up late (too). Dave also introduced us (he's in his late 60s FFS!) to some cool bands doing sick live versions (and or had them on because he liked them, see CAKE and many others).

I've carefully watched the last few weeks of Dave's final shows. Nothing changes folks. Wry, acerbic jabs, intelligent and friendly dialogue and minutes that fly by giving enjoyment.

Dave is/was not everyone's cup of TV. He was mine, from the very first show. Some of the guests he had on did some very spectacular and real things. I think Dave is a genuine as they come.

I will miss his show. I will miss the Robin Williams craziness, I will miss Terry Carr (oh how I loved that gorgeous woman), I will miss the stupidity of stupid things and realizing Dave just knew some of us got his down to earth humour.

Thanks 29 for dropping this great comment.

I anticipate a great final show. I will miss it as it ends.

Thanks Dave and crew for 3 decades + of entertainment.

  40. Wow. I had a bit more respect for Babs as a coach. I mean, nothing wrong with trying to maximize your salary, but this is career suicide. He's just shown that he's more interested in a few more bucks than winning. Which, again, is fine. But it doesn't mean I have to respect him as a competitor anymore.

At the end of the day, I'd rather he be in Toronto than BUF or DET. He could make those teams better. No one can make the leaf better.

Like Carlyle said, if the players don't want to do what you want them to do, then you can coach all you want but nothing will change. I suspect this is just the start of Shamahan's leaf transformation. Lots and lots of player movement coming.

  41. Wow imagine the pillars of the Canadian economy have no idea what a dollar is worth, Last time I checked Pavel Datsuyk and his mates in their prime willl not play for Toronto in 2015/16, He is getting double AV salary in New York and 3 times the next highest coaches. Very hard to Justify that in any sort of fiscal reality.

However good for Babcock. They offered he took, I should have gone to McGill. This will be one of the most interesting hockey stories every. The anchor team coached by the Olympic sailing champion. I expect both boats will sink.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. As a McGill alum, I can tell you it's no guarantee of money or success. Sigh.

Babcock is a good coach. He can do good things with talented teams, maybe even make pretty good teams great. But he can't turn around 50 years of terrible. It was the same attitude with the McDavid sweepstakes, they think one guy can change everything. It shows how little they understand the problem.

Not that I ever expected Babs to go to Montreal, but this for sure means MT will be back behind the bench again next season. Which continues the Catch 22: If Price plays lights out again, MT will stay and they won't win the Cup. If Price falters, there is a (small) chance that MT will finally get his walking papers, but the team still won't win the Cup. It's a very depressing realization.

      Delete
    2. And to anyone who said that Montreal shouldn't have gone after Babcock because MT did fine/great (i.e. MB), I have to repeat what I read somewhere recently. If you're the Islanders and you have Taveres and suddenly Crosby becomes available, would you still not do everything you can to get him? It's not saying Taveres did a terrible job, it's just that there is a better opportunity. Sure, ok, let's trust MB but it seems like he's running the team more like a brotherhood instead of a business. I don't care if MT is your friend. There's a better option out there, and you have the money get him. Make the correct choice for the TEAM, not for your Christmas card list.

      Delete
    3. I can just hear MT's brain ticking vs leaf games, it will just keep repeating 50M, 50M, 50M, insecurity sets in and he gets out-coached - again.

      Delete
  42. I am not sure how much eMTy makes a year. Now that Babcock has raised the bar it is surely a bargin, but still way to much.

'We need to put Canada's team back on the map', "I'm a fan of Dion's.", "I have a burning desire to win, but I don't want to just make the playoffs."

The problem is the SFU's think the GTA is Canada and can't think beyond those terms. Let them and their new media darling "ol' Sour Puss", live in their little fantasy world. 46. Yes, Babcock is a good coach. But aren't people blowing it a bit out of proportion? He's won ONE Cup. He led two incredibly great Team Canada's to golds. I do believe he makes pretty good players better, and gets the best out of his great players. But he doesn't turn shit into gold. I think he would have been a good fit for Montreal because the talent is already here and he can facilitate the development of that talent and get the most out of it. But he can't create talent out of thin air.

I'm not putting Babcock down for getting paid, but he's had great success with a franchise that was already riding a successful wave. He certainly contributed to it, but the Wings were the Wings before Mike came on board, and will likely continue being a perrenial playoff team for several more years. Maybe Babs knew if he went to a real contender and they didn't win the Cup shortly after he would be sort of exposed. Maybe he chose Toronto strategically because no one in their right mind expects them to even make the playoffs for 2-3 years. Maybe he intentionally picked a team with such low expectations that he can't possibly fail. Again, he made the Cup finals three times in his career. Once with an incredibly hot goalie in 2002. Then with an incredibly talented team in 2008 and 09. Good for him, Scotty Bowman also had really talented teams. I'm just saying that maybe Mike chose the easy way out. If he were to come to, say, Montreal and not win the Cup with this team in the next few years, his talents and legacy might be questioned. If he doesn't win with Toronto in the next 8 years no one will say it's his fault. Add on the $50 paycheque, I don't really blame him for selling out. Maybe Babs isn't as competitive as we thought. I mean, I think going to Toronto after talking about wanting to win pretty much proves that, don't you?
