    BREAKING
It's official, the PLAYERS have voted PatCHes to be their captain.

    juce9:42 AM
Andrei Markov, Tomas Plekanec, P.K. Subban and Brendan Gallagher will serve as assistant captains

    the Maritimer11:00 AM
    Good for Max, congrats!

    K3X11:23 AM
I am really happy it was a players vote - I thought a captain was going to be appointed - hence my leaning to PFK. But the players doing the voting has always been a better solution and I am delighted that they went with Patches! He deserves it and I love that they voted Gallagher an "A"...Now the refs will have to listen to him!

    juce12:35 PM
I also though they would assign the captain. Players vote is the way to go and this also tells me that management felt the player-CHosen captain also had their support to act as the voice between management and the team.

    Congrats patCHes wooo!!!!!

    HabsFan291:08 PM
@the M - nice on the 80! Must have been frustrating as hell though to not see that 79. I know because I think I have shot 90 5 times, but never broken it. sigh.

    HabsFan291:17 PM
PatCHes presser on now. Speaking French! Not quite as well as PFK did, but still pretty good!

    HabsFan291:18 PM
Players could vote for anyone they wanted except TFS

    HabsFan291:25 PM
DGMB and MT2 went to PatCHes house to tell him in person, but they went to the wrong house!

    HabsFan291:28 PM
Vodkov / KidG and PFK / Plexxxe will be the Assistant Captain "teams" and rotate home away like last year. Paired Vodkov and KidG because youngest and oldest

    HabsFan291:37 PM
PatCHes was also voted captain by his teammates... in high school

    HabsFan291:44 PM
DGMB wont reveal the vote totals. understandable

    HabsFan291:46 PM
And we're done and taking pics. PatCHes' smile is ear to ear

  2. Only players who were there at the end of last season had a vote.

  3. I know it's only a scrimmage, but I am so psyched for Sunday!!!
Does anyone know where the players line inside the Bell centre up to greet the fans? Ya, know, in case I want to 'stalk' any of them.

  7. Since I announced my support for the Montreal Children’s Hospital, a great many of you have said you would like to join the cause. Here’s how: donate $1 before midnight on September 24, 2015 and become eligible to win one of 76 signed copies of my photo. Plus, one lucky person will win 2 tickets to the home opener and attend a meet and greet with me after the game. Give then share!

  9. The NHL is upping its security measures for this upcoming season.

All 30 rinks will mandate walk-through metal detectors at entrance gates in time for the preseason, and have fans, media, employees, and even players pass through them in order to gain access to the buildings.

"It's the trend of the industry," NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly told Stephen Whyno of the Canadian Press.

"For better or for worse, we live in an uncertain world, and it has to be of paramount importance to us, the health and safety of our fans, and an extra precaution that might take an extra 30 seconds for each fan I think is more than worth it if it means you're creating a safer environment for your fanbase."

  10. Congratulations to the new Cap'n Patches. There's probably an pirate/eye patch joke in there somewhere.

The season is almost here! Got my NHL center ice internet dealie all ready to go.

Been busy moving to China, and then trying to evade the Great Firewall of China, but did see PK's donation as well. I'm a useless student this year so I will be able to (hopefully) watch most games live! I do have morning classes twice a week, though. Bastards.

The director of my program saw me wearing a Habs shirt on campus and told me the next day that he's a leaf fan. I told him it better not affect my final grade, as we all know the leafs always try to bring the Habs down. He promised it won't, but we did agree to keep our distance.

    GO HABS GO!

I liked the guy, I remember reading once he was very soft spoken off the ice and despite being an enforcer using his fists a great deal, he was an accomplished pianist.

Too many of these young men are passing away at a very young age, time for fighting to go and dinosaurs like Cherry to leave the broadcast scene.

  15. Reports are Todd Ewen committed suicide. So sad.

We've learned former #nhl enforcer Todd Ewen appears to have died of self-inflicted gunshot wound to head @CTVNews

Police are classifying his death as a #suicide. His family in #yyc say he was a loving husband & father @CTVCalgary

Ewen's family also say he battled depression for years. Post #NHL, He also illustrated & wrote children's books

  16. Just noticed TSN has the story up now. The story covers how many enforcers died recently - way too many. The common link seems to be CTE.
NHL has to wake up and do something to protect the players.

Read how The View From Nebraska thinks Patches is a shit choice, should have been His Flaschyness.
Just shows how out of touch he is with all things Habby.
You don't put a C on a showey bucket mouth in this this town.
The quiet reserved intelligent follow me guy gets the C.
    Best choice ever.

    1. Chester I read that article too - and it didn't make sense for a lot of reasons. It implied that Patches placed into the role of Captain by a higher force within the organisation as a deliberate slight at PFK - which is all BS. The fact that Patches was chosen by his teammates says all you ever need to know. Leaders are people you follow. In Montreal, the Captain is the leader whose teammates chose to follow and for this reason, it is the only choice there could have been.

      Delete
    2. With all due respect Chester, that is quite harsh against PK.

      Delete
    3. K3X Local media is also of the opinion that Max was management's choice to begin with, though they didn't say it was as a slight to PK. During the exit interviews players were asked who their choice for captain would be and a lot said PatCHes. During the golf tourney DGMB said an announcement would be made before the end of training camp but after PK's news conference at the hospital, the 'public race' for captaincy became a spotlight so management decided, based on player opinions from the exit interviews, that it was 'safe' to put it to a vote immediately the day before training camp opened and made it public the day of. This helped them avoid controversy and let themselves 'off the hook' being able to claim it was the players' decision.

Patches was the correct choice, by the players, management or whothefuckever. PK already has a target on his back, he didn't need it to be any bigger. PK is a larger than life character, a fan favourite and one of the most skilled players the Habs have had in a LONG time. I welcome his presence on the team.

      Delete
    6. Precisely why Patches is the captain, PK is a target and gets no respect from the league and Colon's little league of refs and making him captain wouldn't have changed that, least, I don't think so based on how he's been treated up to now. This will allow PK to focus on his game without the additional target on his back by the SFU that being a captain would have created.

    7. I just got the 'The View From Nebraska' descriptor. Funny.

PatCHes is a great CHoice. PFK would've been equally great. An abundance of riCHes!

  18. The details of Tood Ewen's of death are troubling. I've never been a proponent for fighting, ever. Have I enjoyed watching a Hab pound a leaf or a broom. Yeah, in the moment but I have always been disgusted by the rock em' sock em' crowd that benefitted from fights.

May he now rest in peace and something be dome about fighting and concussions and CTE and all that hurts an honest player.

    ReplyDelete
  19. I challenge the SFU to put aside 10% of their leaf blather and focus on the issue of concussions.

And that laff team wasn't even coached by the $50 Million Dollar Man! He was coaching the B team in Toronto against the Turds.

Golf sure is a funny game. The last two days I shot 92, I misplaced my short game somewhere last weekend and haven't been able to find it, plus lipping out a lot of short putts. I also think they've did some subtle changes to flag placement making it tougher to get to them on approach. I'll do better today.

  34. I don't like the idea of this 3 on 3 nonesense. What's wrong with a mutherfucking tie game for christ sake? OK - I know that ship has sailed but honestly 3 on 3 is fucking bullshit unless you aren't going to award a loser point to the team that doesn't gain possession off the opening faceoff. Why bother? And it affects the goalies even more as it counts against their GAA. It also counts for the scorers and only so many key people will get a crack at 5 minutes of 3 on 3. Mind you Patches might finally break 40 goals if he gets a shot...No matter how many arguments I end up making on either side of the argument it's still fucking bullshit devised for people who don't actually know fuck all or give a shit about hockey but who demand a winner form each game that is played. FUCK YOU GARY BETTMAN YOU COCKSUCKER!

    Bruce Weber, the NYT:

Beyond the historic moments and individual accomplishments, what most distinguished Berra’s career was how often he won. From 1946 to 1985, as a player, coach and manager, Berra appeared in a remarkable 21 World Series. Playing on powerful Yankee teams with teammates like Rizzuto and Joe DiMaggio early on and then Whitey Ford and Mickey Mantle, Berra starred on World Series winners in 1947, ’49, ’50, ’51, ’52, ’53, ’56 and ’58. He was a backup catcher and part-time outfielder on the championship teams of 1961 and ’62. (He also played on World Series losers in 1955, ’57, ’60 and ’63.)

All told, his Yankee teams won the American League pennant 14 out of 17 years. He still holds Series records for games played, plate appearances, hits and doubles.

No other player has been a champion so often.

It’s almost unfathomable how successful the Yankees were with Yogi. He spanned the era from DiMaggio to Mantle, and caught Don Larsen’s perfect game in the World Series. A perfect game in the World Series. But beyond his on-field success, if you don’t follow the Yankees closely, you just can’t understand how beloved the man was. When he showed up in recent years for special events at Yankee Stadium, the place just erupted. No one got a response from the crowd like Yogi did.
