  1. Have a great day FHFers. Off to some early meetings.

    In the meanwhile, read this (some good and bad) and watch me tear it apart later today;

I don't profess to have moe's acumen when it comes to figuring out the motives of the personalities involved here, so I eagerly await his opinion on this.

My take: It's all about keeping Toronto and the leaf relevant. They know they have a shit team and it's going to be for a long time. So, the World Cup is being played in Toronto, the self-proclaimed center of the hockey universe and THE most important franchise in the NHL. They (leaf) and the SFU want their anointed saviour, the Almighty Babcock front and center during this huge tournament/event to keep the leaf masses attention on their sad franchise. "Look what genius he is, the leaf are only one player (Stamkos) away from glory!" It's always all about Toronto. I could be wrong but that's the way I see it.

      Over to you moe.

    Alright! Sexy Friday!

Just checking the goalie stats at NHL.com and look who's leading the league in GAA, none other than Sheik. Wonder if the SFU mediots still think the Habs are only Carey Price? Looks to me that both goalies have a pretty good team in front of them. Jeez, maybe they actually help EACH OTHER!!

  10. As promised, my takes on (find the ‘-‘);

Mike Babcock’s decision to coach Canada’s World Cup entry fuelled by ego: Feschuk

    - I love the headline, it is honest and it rattles the leafools who have bought into the Babs is a saviour SFU bullshit. I gleaned some other shilling articles by SFUers like cox, arthur, thn but will stick to the specifics of this piece. It is mostly bang on. The ego part for me was the day Babs was hired and he dissed our country by labelling his new team Canada’s Team. Fuck off. He lost any respect I had for him right there. I could give a shit how much money he makes.

It says a lot about the way things run in Leafland that nobody in the hierarchy overruled their new head coach taking the same role with Team Canada.

    - Partly correct. I guess it must be left the the genial management team’s incredible rebuilding talents to have their highly paid coach spend time elsewhere, regardless of it being in the same city. Love the use of Leafland. I see it as a slight to the leafools. The TML/MLSE has always been a classless organization. Oh they try to put up a professional front but they reek of arrogance and they (now) know the majority of the SFUers will tow the line and spew their inanities verbatim. Feschuk, he of the ‘you’re an idiot’ shot from kessel, has the nads to step over that line. The leafools were ticked at him then and even more so now for throwing a tomato at the Babs’ Side Show Stage.

Maple Leafs coach Mike Babcock was officially introduced as the bench boss for Team Canada at next year's World Cup of Hockey.

    - Interesting how often the SFU needs to repeat what team Babs is from. I don’t remember Detroit being mentioned that often in the past. Different universe I guess.

The recent history of best-on-best international hockey suggests the job description of Head Coach, Team Canada consists of only a few key duties.
    1. Explain daily to reporters why Sidney Crosby can’t seem to find chemistry with his latest set of linemates.
    2. Toss Carey Price in net with Duncan Keith and Drew Doughty playing big minutes on the blue line.
    3. Drink a beer or eight while cuddling another gold medal.

    - 1. Olympians can and should be able to play with any linemate. This isn’t an issue, especially if the mandate was supposedly to choke the game down to defensive hockey and take advantage of breaks.
    - 2. I’d argue that Carey Price stood on his head in Sochi and matured .playing with his elite Canadian teammates Did the coaches (note the plural) have an impact? Of course they did but I suggest Price won Babs his Gold.
    - 3. No problem with this.

    ReplyDelete
  11. We could all fool ourselves into thinking it’ll be the lightest of lifting, this esteemed post at the helm of the Canadian entry in the 2016 World Cup of Hockey. Certainly, if that were the case, it would explain why Maple Leafs coach Mike Babcock inexplicably accepted Hockey Canada’s invitation to take the position, calling it a blessing and an honour at a Thursday press conference.

    - Who wouldn’t accept? Not inexplicable. A lesser egomaniac would’ve suggested Quennevhlle be given the reigns. The Canadian thing to do eh?! Honour? Of course. Blessing? Yup, a big one considering the mess he is now in until he bails in year 3.

But we all know there’s a lot more to dominating the international game than the surface view might suggest, that coaching Team Canada is a big responsibility Babcock won’t take lightly. He spent part of Thursday explaining how being the man in charge of the national roster will involve taking his summer vacation and “throwing it out the window.” There will be a lot to think about, a lot to discuss with Team Canada GM Doug Armstrong, a lot of work.
And so it’s worth asking: Why on earth didn’t Babcock politely decline the invitation on account of that other pressing concern that’s supposed to be weighing on his brain 24-7?

    - I’m not taking or making light of Babs being the coach. He is obviously skilled but I doubt he and the other management people need an entire summer vacation to dwell on the Team. Just because Babs will be off on the last day of the season whilst the other coaches will likely be seeing playoff work in front of them isn’t lost on even the stupidest of leafools. I’m not impressed with Armstrong’s pandering to the CotU. There’s a reason that the R.O.C. acronym exists. I doubt Babs ever thought of declining, ever, especially now. He knows where his bread is buttered and he will take advantage of it. Lucky for us he can’t Quinn in Cujo above Brodeur. BTW, funny how the SFU isn’t yipping about Bernier being the 3rd stringer for this team.

Think about it: Babcock just committed to an eight-year contract to tackle what’s most certainly the most difficult and all-consuming task in his sport — you know, that tiny little $6.25 million-a-year day job that involves attempting to turn around a national laughingstock that hasn’t made the playoffs in an 82-game season in nearly 12 years and doesn’t look poised to do it anytime soon.

    - Isn’t it ‘Think aboot it’? ; ) Getting the Cubs to win a world series is a bigger task in sport. Bonus, those guys are loveable. ‘national laughingstock’, I could repeat this all fucking day. I kinda do. I also love it when reporters bring up fun stats. Did you know the Habs have played 84 playoff games to the leaf 7, in the last few playoff years? Despite it being a broon win, that 7th game warmed the cockles of my heart. Eat it and deal with it.

A dozen games into his tenure in Toronto, Babcock has already acknowledged that the job, for all its riches, is tougher than he ever imagined it could be.
The Maple Leafs have two wins. They have, maybe, a small handful of players worth keeping. They’re in the early, early stages of taking stock of an organization that has oozed dysfunction for most of half a century and attempting to transform it into a perennial Stanley Cup contender. The task is Herculean — or so we’ve been told by everyone in charge.

    - ‘tenure’ is a loaded word. I work at a university, I know. The rest of that paragraph is pure Seinfeldian comedy gold.

    ReplyDelete
  12. In other words, there is nothing about Babcock’s situation as the highest-paid hockey man on the planet that screams, “Dude’s in need of a part-time job!”
Don’t tell this to Babcock. He scoffed at the idea that Leafs ownership and management might question the wisdom of him deciding to moonlight as another team’s head coach.

    - Not too pleased with the ‘another’ part. This is our fucking national pro men’s team here, this isn’t fucking Arizona. Also, too, I often wonder why the SFU keep using astronomical terminology. I will now create a new word. Astrocomical. It is royalty-free (remember I have a sexy internet lawyer friend, wish him a nice day).

“Why wouldn’t they (want me to coach Team Canada)?” Babcock said Thursday. “I think that would be straightforward.”

    - There’s that un-Canadian, typically-yet-freshly-created-Toronto ego. STFU.

Babcock said he and Leafs GM Lou Lamoriello talked about the issue “quite a bit.” But Lamoriello, who attended Thursday’s press conference in Etobicoke with team president Brendan Shanahan and minority owner Larry Tanenbaum, ultimately gave him the okay.

    - Why were all the MLSE/TML management people at this PR doohickey? Is Louey Lou Canadian? If not, get lost.

“What people don’t understand sometimes, is they think you are who you are and they think you’re established and that’s it. And you’re not. You’re a work in progress,” Babcock said. “How do you get better ideas than being around the best people in the world? Being around those players, they teach you something every single time. They’ve got ideas. They share them with you. They’re confident guys. The coaches are the same way. There’ll be tons of debate and laughter.”
Leaf fans will be heartened to know Babcock will be enjoying some yucks while he’s learning so much. But what about the Maple Leafs players he’s being paid to coach? They’ll be slogging through the second training camp of the Babcock era largely without Babcock. Given that the World Cup will overlap with NHL camps, Babcock acknowledged it’ll be his Toronto assistants who’ll have to do most of the Leaf-wise coaching next September. In what should be an important month, with the organization possibly facing crucial decisions about the NHL readiness of prized prospects like William Nylander and Mitch Marner, Babcock won’t be able to give a comprehensive assessment of the young talent on hand. For a developing team, that’s a huge loss.

    - There’s that un-Canadian, typically-yet-freshly-created-Toronto ego. STFU, again. I think this is the ‘quite a bit’ part. The COTU/TML knows that Babs can skip town or hallway, whatever. This is part of the rebuild of their putrid team and their hard to swallow branding. 2017 is soon upon them. Can’t wait to see their big ceremony. My money is that Dave Keon stays away. The Habs should retire Dave’s number to the Bell Centre rafters for fun (but they are way classier than I).

There’s another side to this, of course. Babcock has proven himself to be a brilliant tournament coach. At the 2014 Olympics Team Canada allowed three goals against in six games. Three. Goals. In. Six. Games.

    - Who. Was. The. Brilliant. Goalie?

    ReplyDelete
  13. As Armstrong was saying on Thursday, Babcock’s ability to get roster-wide buy-in had a lot to do with that defensive dominance. Then again, it wasn’t like he was saddled with a ragtag band of malcontents. The talent pool was deep enough that P.K. Subban could barely get a sniff of a shift.

    - Anyone heard or seen Vlasic, aka Pickles, since Sochi? PFK will rock the WHC16. Here’s hoping he engraves his first Stanley Cup and his second Norris just before then. He and TFS might still be a little parade-weary. (BTW, why not throw in KidA to he roster camp and depending on how well he continues to play, why not give Dish a chance (because you know dam well that morgan and ceine will be invited).

Still, how could Hockey Canada justify taking the national job away from Babcock when all he’s done is win with it? Along with gold medals in the past two Olympics, Babcock won a world championship in 2004 and a junior world championship in 1997. That makes him arguably the pre-eminent coach of professional players available — unless the argument includes Chicago’s Joel Quenneville, who has won three Stanley Cups with the Blackhawks since Babcock won his only one with Detroit in 2008.
Quenneville has agreed to serve on Babcock’s staff as an assistant coach this fall. He’ll join a staff that also includes Boston’s Claude Julien, Washington’s Barry Trotz and Carolina’s Bill Peters.

    - Unselfishness is a nice virtue. (Can’t wait to hear about DGMB, Waite (needs a nickname) and possibly Timmins (aka TnT) nominated to the Team’s exec suite.

But Quenneville, to this eye, was the obvious choice for the head job, even if you understand there was only one way Hockey Canada could have handed Quenneville the reins. CEO Tom Renney and Armstrong needed Babcock to gracefully acknowledge he had plenty on his plate in Toronto and suggest it be somebody else’s turn. Alas, no.
“You have a chance to get better,” Babcock said, explaining what attracted him to another run at glory. “By getting better, you have a chance to help the Leafs. And when you know who the players are, you have a chance at free-agent time to know who the players are, instead of just thinking you know who they are. It’s nice to be involved. When you’re not involved, you’re not involved. If you think TV’s getting it done, it’s not.” That’s a staggering string of sentences. Just when we were under the impression Babcock’s job title was head coach — suddenly he needs to be on Team Canada’s bench so he can be Toronto’s chief scout, too? And as for Babcock assessing free agents — if the organizational dream comes true, by the time next September rolls around, Steven Stamkos will already be a Maple Leaf.

    - “By getting better, you have a chance to help the Leafs” This made me puke. What a fucking arrogant comment. This is about Canada you Hogtown hack. The always classy TFS said his Olympic experience made him a better goalie. He didn’t mention his team, just his position. Love the getting it done on teevee/ bit. Care to shine some light on who owns the teevee bits? Despite your team’s pathetic play, all we hear is how they play the game. 100s of other games but we get dumbed-down fucking garbage about how Babs is changing the game, the possession, the culture, the thought process, the teaching, the learning, etc. et al. ad nauseum. The ‘chief scout’ fucking rankles me and then some. Fuck off thinking your are scouting Team Canada for the benefit of your leaf. Fucking jealous POS. Assessing free agents too? I’m getting close to calling someone a traitor. Hey another new word popped into my not-so-feeble (sorry if I sound arrogant) mind. Ready, here it is; traitoronto. I hope Stamkos calls his good friend PFK and asks him what it is like to stick with a winning organization.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Maybe Babcock’s status as the national coach will sway elite players to come to Toronto. Maybe it won’t. What’s undeniable is that the 2016 World Cup will be Quenneville’s first experience on a Team Canada bench; the fact that Quenneville hasn’t worked at the past two Olympics doesn’t seem to have hurt his NHL coaching acumen.

    - It won’t.

Babcock expects people to believe he’ll be gathering otherwise unavailable intelligence on the members of World Cup rosters that he wouldn’t otherwise get watching on TV. But the games, every one of them, are in Toronto. He could easily run the Leafs training camp by day and observe the action in person by night.

    - Every game in ChokeinSmokeville. How unCanadian.

That’s what he’d be doing if he made this decision using his brain. Clearly it’s his ego in charge here.

    - Yup.

And it says a lot about the way things run in Leafland that nobody in the hierarchy overruled it.

    - Yup. Also, leafland.

    Addendump (yup, another new word), things that make me sick to my stomaCH (or maybe soothe the savage beast in me, yes a glass of wine helps);

    - the leafool fans are trying their best to play with the Team Canada vs. Canada’s Team greatest coach in the(ir) universe shit, as juce acronym’d it, IATG

    - the SFU are falling all over themselves about their tranna angles to this tournament, believe me its gonna get worse

    - FesCHuk should move to Montreal and pull a draft-dodger comes to a beautiful Canadian city to seek serenity Jack Todd move (I’ve got no issues with it BTW and FWIW I like the guy as he mellows into his later years).

    - the leafools always bring up Babs’ salary number to make them feel richer. Too funny I say.

    - one of the funniest leafools fudges is their attacking of Feschuk’s ‘journalistic integrity’, do these wads not read the SFU hype and simply regurgitate it? Of course they do. Their superior inferiority complex is superior to any complex inferiority complex.

    - to the leafools a troll is anything that isn’t a leafool

    - ‘national laughingstock’

    Great job moe.

I didn't break it all down in as much detail as you did, but I think I got the gist of the article: "HEY LOOK AT ME OVER HERE I COACH THE MAYPOLE LEEFS AND I AM THE GREATEST COACH OF ALL TIME."

Obviously the guy as read his own press clippings to much and as Feschuk as asserted, the ego has taken over.

One thing I would point out, PK will definitely be on that team, unfortunately Dish will be probably playing for Team USA as he is American, hey maybe gCHuk as well. Rielly will get the invite to placate the leafools but I doubt he makes it as he is too young and even Blabs wouldn't invite the Pylon. Armstrong is smarter than that.

Like I said earlier it's always all about Toronto.

I liked when you mentioned about the 3 goals in 6 games, no mention of who the goalie was. I guess he just had to stand there while Babcock directed traffic on and off the bench and the impenetrable defence never allowed the opposing team any where near said goalie. Funny, altough I don't watch it any more, Hockey Central at Noon were talking about the goalie for the World Cup, mallard said maybe Fleury should be considered, shannon said (jokingly and pointedly making fun of leafools and mediots) that Reimer be considered referencing back to Sochi. They all knew who would be the starting goalie but never, ever mentioned him by name.

National laughingstock. Music to my ears.
