    2. Amen ...In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
      In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
      In Flanders fields.

  2. I love that they take their fathers with them on the road. I am a father of 4, and two of them are nearing the end of their teens. I can only imagine what an amazing feeling it must be to become full immersed in the life of your child as an adult. The Montreal Canadiens are the classiest organisation in professional sports. With this, they have remembered that the players are playing a game and they have brought their parents in to join them. It is so cool!

  7. Though my father never liked to talk about the war (WWII), he was never so proud when he could share this day with his fellow soldiers...and then later in life when he would gather with them at the legion after the ceremony with his four grown sons in tow. Even then, rather than reminisce about the war, he and his friends would instead focus on the present, their children, their grandchildren. All with such pride. He lost his boyhood best friend on Juno Beach on D-Day...one of many reasons he didn't like to recall those days, but it was clear there wasn't a day that went by that he didn't think of his fallen comrades. Same as there isn't a day goes by I don't think of him since losing him in 2001. But today the memories are extra special because I know what this day meant to him. RIP Dad.

Dad was a big Habs fan and a religious man. I hope he's able to gather around the 'set' and catch a few games with the Rocket, Gros Bill and the boys.

And on this day I will just say Go Habs Go!

My family has no military history to speak of. My father was only 8 years old when WW II broke out. His father died the same year at 39 of pneumonia but doing the math he would have only been 14 when WW I started. The only military service I could find in my Dad's family was our very first ancestor who fought in...... the American Revolution!! He served on 3 British warships and when the Americans won, he ended up in Nova Scotia, a Loyalist, and here I am! Still, I always pause for the moment of silence at 11:00am.

I should clarify--- our first ancestor in North America. He came over from England in 1776.

    2. I had two (decorated) uncles on my Dad's side that served a full tour of duty in WWII. Proud Canadians and proud Quebecers.

I also had a beloved neighbour of 20 years (back when I was a young boy) who served in both WWI and WWII, shot in the leg in Italy months before the end of WWII. Man the stories this guy told us. Many about the young local lovelies and the pleasure of R&R and sharing a pint. Some things never change.

  49. I hate Mike Johnson. Like many of the newbies, when he was first on-air, he was OK (same with the Fried Man), but after living and breathing everything leaf in that shithole, it eventually sticked to him. Even if he was a leaf (i don't count the cup of coffee he had with the Habs), he was OK. But now, holy fuck the disdain for the Habs that emanates (word of the night for me) from his every word is disgusting. Guess we'll have to wait for PK to retire before we have a real Hab on-air personality.

  66. Crappy result, but they guys looked great. 2 of the goals against were deflections. Two big penalty kills at the end of the game. Another PP goal. Big difference having those special teams clicking. Makes it a lot easier to watch this team.
Take the point and move on. Rubber still unbeaten in regulation.

  67. - The improvement of the Habs management is a change on the landscape not told enough. Under Gauthier, there were never any positive evaluation surprises really. It was just Gauthier basically handling everything, which is too big a job but Gauthier would not hire staff to help him.

Under Bergevin, the Habs have a man who is secure enough to surround himself with great hockey minds - a lot of them. They sit around a table - guys like Ramsey, Carriere, Dudley, and all the pro scouts and they make wise hockey decisions.

Flynn, Mitchell, Weise, Condon, and many more weren't exactly the cream of the crop but the Habs saw something. It used to be that Trevor Timmins had to basically build the team by himself. Now he's one of many brilliant hockey minds. The Habs are excellent on the ice because they're excellent off the ice too.
    - Nobody should evaluate anything based on a shootout. It didn't change anything. It didn't change a word I wrote here. A very strong Habs effort again. The Habs are a hell of a hockey team.

  69. Can someone explain to me why PK was not out there in OT? Same with the last time, Petry out there to start (not my first choice, but ok). Then Markov, who is great but is also 79 years old and probably doesn't need the extra ice time. Then the too many men is called because Gilbert is stepping on to the ice. Seriously? MT is putting Gilbert out there 3on3 instead of PK? Then no PK for the PK. Please someone explain this to me. It's such a no-brainer that PK should be out there, it's like MT is not doing it just to fuck with us.

Still say, the team is winning DESPITE MT, not because of him.

    ReplyDelete
  70. I think there was something wrong with my feed. It appears that Mike Johnson was watching a totally different game than I was. Several times he was talking about how the Pens were so good offensively and MTL was having a hard time controlling them, yet MTL had been in the Pen's zone for over a minute. Every Pens penalty was due to embellishment, yet every Habs penalty was boderline suspendable. Which is odd, because two of the Habs penalties, including the last one in regulation, were on clear dives. At least twice Johnson noted what an amazing game MAF was having, completely oblivious to the easy goals he had let in. Many times he spoke of how the Habs were on their heels, despite outshooting the Pens significantly.

It was an entertaining, yet frustrating game to watch for many reasons. The PP is getting much better, but most of the time they still resort to the pass-pass-pass-pass-pass-pass-pass-pass-pass-pass-pass-pass-GIVE AWAY system. What also frustrates me to no end is seeing KidG score on a good shot because MAF is terrible, yet then other guys passing to no one in particular when they have an even better shot to take. Happens all the time. An example would be Vodkov "passing it back" to gCHuck when the kid's tied up and behind the goal line on a 2on1. SHOOT THE FUCKING PUCK MAN! MAF really is terrible. It probably won't go in anyway, but there's ZERO chance if you pass it. It's frustrating because they had chances to put the game away when they were up by 1, but instead tried to get fancy and score everyone on the ice an assist on a goal that never came because no one would shoot it.

But anyway, it's still a point and the Pens are a good team and it was a road game. There will be no mention of the late PP and the OT PP for the Pens anywhere, although when the Habs get a 3rd period PP the Bureau of Tin Foil Hats (aka every English sports writer in the country outside Quebec) write PhD level theses on the subject.

GO HABS GO and all that.

The SFUs never have anything but praise for MA Fleury, he is great. We all know they love them some Penguins because of the big names - Sid, Malkin and now phat phil - but Fleury fucking sucks. He lets in shitty soft goals all the fucking time going back to playing in the World Juniors 10 years or more ago. The guy never disappoints me he's a fucking sieve.
