"That's too much and too long." These are not words overheard in the foxhole, but my perception of the Shaw deal. I could see dumping Lego to save that money for a top 6 forward. Ah well, I'm going to quit worrying about BBB's dealings.

Wow, big news over at SN. I can't believe they actually got rid of PJ and Healy. I see they also got rid of Chantal Desjardins who hosted the Habs' broadcasts. Even though not from Montreal (I don't think), she must have sounded too pro-Hab with that name. Now they can stick a true SFUer in that position instead. Doesn't matter - the intermissions of the Habs games are dreadful.

"The Montreal Canadiens have been in contact with Dale Weise's camp. There's interest to perhaps bring him back -- the Canadiens traded him to the Chicago Blackhawks before the deadline -- but it would have to be at the right price. Other teams have also called. Weise is a useful bottom-six guy and was popular in Montreal. But, again, I don't think GM Marc Bergevin goes that route unless the price is right."

If Bargain Bin is entertaining thoughts of bringing back CHip, he must be going to move a few of his 15 or so 4th liners he has accumulated. Also, seems he has asked about Brooklyn Islander 4th liner Matt Martin. As Bergy likes to say: " You can never 'ave too many fort liners".

One of the lighter aspects of Mr. Obama’s visit that is being watched is whether or not the President will return to Le Moulin de Provence, a French bakery in Ottawa’s ByWard Market that Mr. Obama visited in 2009. The more I think about it, the more I'm convinced the tail is wagging the dog here. Therrien convinced Bergevin to make this deal, wouldn't want a supposed defensive liability like Hall. This is so fucked up.

  67. We completed today an important transaction which I am convinced will make the Canadiens a better team. It was also one of the most difficult decisions I had to make as general manager of the Montreal Canadiens. In Shea Weber, we get a top-rated NHL defenseman with tremendous leadership, and a player who will improve our defensive group as well as our powerplay for many years to come. Shea Weber led all NHL defensemen last season with 14 powerplay goals. He is a complete rearguard with impressive size and a powerful shot. P.K. Subban is a special and very talented player. He provided the Canadiens organization with strong performances on the ice and generous commitment in the community. I wish him the best of luck with the Predators

Individually, he won the 2013 Norris Trophy as the NHL’s top defenseman, was a finalist for the award in 2015, is a two-time First-Team NHL All-Star (2013 and 2015) and a 2011 All-Rookie Team selection. He has helped teams win a gold medal at the 2014 Winter Olympics and a pair of World Junior Championships (2008 and 2009). Over the past four seasons – dating back to 2012-13 – the 6-foot, 210-pound blueliner has amassed 203 points (42g-160a) in 274 regular-season games, third most among all NHL defensemen. He has surpassed the 50-point mark in each of the past three seasons, highlighted by a career-high 60 points (15g-45a) in 2014-15. He has advanced past the first round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs in each of his last two appearances in the postseason, ranking fourth among NHL blueliners in points (5g-9a-14pts) in 2014, helping Montreal reach the Eastern Conference Final.

A native of Toronto, Subban started his professional career in 2009-10, being named to the AHL All-Rookie Team and an AHL First-Team All-Star after leading all league blueliners in goals (18) and ranking third in points. The 43rd overall selection in the 2007 NHL Draft (second round) played four seasons with the OHL’s Belleville Bulls from 2005-09, posting 190 points (42g-148a) in 234 games and being named a 2009 First-Team OHL All-Star."

First, I'd just like to say that this "hockey trade" was made for two reasons. 1. Michel Therrien. 2. To protect Max Pacioretty, Mr. Corporate, from being out played on the ice and out shone in the dressing room.

Secondly, I agree with moe, we have to move on. PK is gone but will not be forgotten. I predict that the Montreal Canadiens will regret this move down the road. Chris Chelios, Eric Desjardins, Mathieu Schneider, Ryan McDonagh and now PK Subban. Anybody like those guys?

Last, the Montreal Canadiens have become a staid, conservative organization who don't want any large personalities on their team. Let's all play eMTy's "system" and enjoy the "process". We can't have any excitement on the ice now can we? Can you say Lottery team?

I have no opinion on Shea Webber because the Montreal Canadiens are now dead to me. Fuck you Marc Bergevin - you are a cunt. I feel sick. This is not your team - this is our team - all you have done is to set it back another decade. Fuck you.

I would say the window to win a cup with the core we have isn't closed, but it's shutting a lot quicker today than it was yesterday. I think Shweb? SFW? still has a good 3 years in him to help the team towards that goal. Now do I think BBB has the hockey mind to get the other players needed to make that happen? After today, do you need to even ask?
But we still got Carey's healthy knee. So no worries.

I've been reading comments on various Twitter accounts, this one caught my eye (among many): The Canadiens run their star athlete out of town and keep a coach basically no on likes. Except Bergevin. Former player Anthony Stewart couldn't believe how PK was treated during his time there. Although the majority of fans adored him, Habs management constantly tried to beat him down. They benched him repeatedly, bridged him, low balled him and finally traded him. Way to go Marc and Mike, you win. You folks in Nashville enjoy him, he's a special player.

He'll be a huge presence in a market that is smaller, but apparently has rabid fans (been reading about them for years now). And let's be real, the South is a great market for PK to finally become the face of the franchise and really sell hockey to a whole new generation. They're going to love him down there. So good for PK.

  110. The deeper depression is knowing that Molson had to sign off on this, so this disease goes straight to the top. Even if Molson was iffy about MB/MT he wouldn't have allowed him to make such a big move with a franchise player. It also indicates that the organization as a whole learned nothing from the Roy trade (or McDonnaugh trade). Politics is more important than winning, and it's hard to be a 'fan' of that.

I don't know, I hate that in sports people always say you have to be loyal to be a 'real' fan. Sorry, at this point if your a still a "Habs fan" your really just a fan of MT's ego and MB's incompetence. They're a business and they've already gotten decades of business from me out of loyalty. It's about time they start actually trying to make a good product to keep me. Not even just winning, but at least TRYING to win.

I think PFK just wore out his welcome with Mr Molson. MT and BB have been plotting this since he signed the $9 mill contract. I bet PFK leads Nashville in scoring next year with 80 to 100 pts. I bet Lego goes over twenty goals and fifty points. I bet DDD get PP and zero points. I dont think this trade is the worst, maybe number 4 or 5. It is possible that in the win now equation Weber beats PFK. The eight years after that total loss.

  115. I posted my last comments at about 1.30 am UK time. I tried going to sleep after that but couldn't get it out of my head. I have now literally lost a night's sleep over this. I am so angry with the Habs management I don't know what to do. I watched Bergevin's presser this morning and the guy is unbelievable. He called Webber a "diamond in the rough" - He's fucking 31 years old - he's well past being "in the rough" For the money he gets he better be able to sit alongside the crown jewels FFS. He called hima stud who will love the eastern division because it's a piece of cake compared to the west. Not past his prime - lots of years left...I would love to hear Nashville's presser. How much you bet he says something along the lines of "I decided I wpoiuld take a chance and I gave Bergy a call. I said how 'bout this - PK for Webber - Fuck me - he said yes. He didn't ask me for anythinhg else either. No draft picks, no 4th liners - I couldn't believe my luck - Hey - if you get a chance to get an elite defenseman just entering his prime and all you have to do is give up one of you veterans whose best years are behind him - you make that deal mutherfucker!!"

After sleeping on it, I can see where Bergevin is coming from. Last season many of us complained that the Habs were one of the easiest teams in the league to play against, as soft as room temperature butter. I'm not blaming PK for that, that's not his game to run people. Weber and Shaw have changed that and I don't think Bergevin is done yet. They say time heals all wounds and PK's departure will eventually heal, I think but that is way, way down the road. Bergevin (and Geoff Molson) has taken a huge gamble here and he better be right or they are both going to be hung in effigy. I hope during the season opener Shea Weber is not booed in the introductions, but please feel free to unload on eMTy.

Finally, I look forward to Moey posting more often. I like her short, succinct comments during games such as: "Oh poo".

I actually had a nightmare about this last night and awoke with a brief hope that the whole thing was a dream, but I quickly realized it wasn't the case. How ironic that PK needs to escape to the south to escape the bigotry and racism.

  118. Still in mild shock but no longer in denial that this was nothing but a hockey decision, as potentially fearfully a failed decision. It weirds me out that the Montreal canadiens couldn't see beyond just a hockey player and recognize the full value of PFK. We are going to miss him but life as a Habs fan goes on. I did ponder though if a Patrick Roy, at the helm of the Habs, would've made this move. Heh, of course not because MT2 would never have been hired in the first place. My other concern is Goeff Molson's managerial CHops. So far, meh. Also, another great Timmins' pick goes away. Sad but true.

So, time to move on. Time to figure out a simpler blog header with less devotion to my fave Habs. Great to see the passion of all the FHFers.

    Merci PK.

    1. Too bad this organization can't appreciate a once-in-a-generation talent and fan fave when they have it. PK will be terribly missed. Weber will give us his best but it's hard to imagine him and Markov - both slow-footed by today's standards - pairing up that well. So Petry or Beaulieu on the top pairing? Perhaps.

After reading Wilde's column, where he tells of an elephant in the room, I recall the curious "dangling" comment from Lafleur a few weeks back and I wonder if maybe some players/mgmt on the team have "small hands" and can't handle their own shortcomings.

Where the Subban trade becomes insane is in the fact that, in a league governed by a hard salary cap, Weber has one of the largest contracts in the sport. He is four years into a 14-year, US$110-million contract that will carry a charge against the salary cap of almost $8-million for each of the next 10 seasons. TEN SEASONS. (Sorry for the yelling.) At which point Weber, who last year was the 50th-best defenceman in the NHL in terms of even-strength point production at age 30, will be 40 years old. Subban, meanwhile, is four years younger, and is owed $9-million on the cap for the next six seasons. Nashville will stop owing him big money when he is 32, or eight years younger than Weber at the point at which Montreal will stop paying him like an elite defenceman. Sports teams often make wild long-term deals with total awareness that it will be a terrible contract in the later years, in the understanding that the future pain is worth the present value of acquiring the player. The Predators chose that with Weber — forced into it by a Flyers’ offer sheet to Weber when he was a restricted free agent — then sloughed off the anchor years of the deal on the Canadiens in exchange for a new defenceman in his prime. Put another way, Montreal gave up key productive years of Subban in exchange for the penalty years of the Weber contract. So, there’s that.

  122. One of the worst aspects of this trade is there is no way to take Habs mgmt seriously. The imacculate trade, never even talked about it, never thought about it, it just happened. What I believe really happened is PFK was shopped hard, and with the deadline approaching, grabbed the floating turd. Sicne Taylor Hall was given away for a bag of pucks, WTF could we not have made a deal with EDM? This does indicatee that perhaps we did overvalue PFK or Chirelli also has a small penis.

  124. I have had some time to reflect. I did not sleep last night because of how angered I was. I saw this coming a long time ago and now I am going to wake up on Canada Day without PK being on the Habs roster - because he was bigger than Marc Bergevin and Michel Therrien. In his presser, there was not one mention of PK being an elite D man - and no matter what you think about his flashy behaviour, he was amongst the league elite. Not being selected to play in the September circle jerk does not mean he wasnt a top quality D man. But he was the best asset the habs have had in a very long time (besides TFS) and he was treated horribly. Bergevin was dismissive of any suggestion that Webber was past his prime. "Fuck you - I'm marc Bergevin - I know everything - you know shit" was what he said to the reporter who dared to ask the question. (I paraphrase...) But the presser was a repeat of the end of year presser and it will be the same all season long. The press can ask what they want - Marc knows best and fuck you for asking me that question you asshole!. I don't know if Webber is slow, fast, fat or 6'8 - but he is a Hab now and he's getting more money than anyone on the team so he better earn it. He's a stud...a diamond in the rough (pretty sure those two are contradictory but I should fuck off I'm not Marc Bergevin - so what do I know).

The Habs are not dead to me, as much as I did say those exact words last night. They will never be dead to me - but a big part of me did die last night. The part that really really cares and really believes that they can win the Stanley Cup again. That died. Marc Bergevin killed it. Swarmy prick alluded to another deal he has cooking - so look for him to trade Galchenyuk, Beaulieu and DLR for a power forward and 2 - 2nd round draft picks. Just wait...

The M - good luck on that golf game. Keep at 'er and you'll break 90 in no time.

  127. Stayed up late and read all the reactions from all over the league on the internets last night. Everyone, including Nashville and its fans, thinks Montreal got fleeced. On top of that, no one can figure out why MB even made this move (EDM got fleeced, but at least they moved an extra part and filled a need). Hockey fans from all teams, including Toronto, Boston and Ottawa, have been flooding Hab chat boards to offer condolences. So it's not just us over-sensitive Hab fans reacting to this nonsense.

Besides the players themselves, what does this team potential UFAs? Why on Earth would they sign in Montreal now? Knowing that the coach is an egomaniac douche with no skills, yet an untouchable god. Either play his terrible 90s hockey or be scapegoated and thrown away. Why play in Montreal where skill is demonized and favourites are given rewards based on language ability rather than results? This isn't just about this trade, as terrible as it is, it's about sending a message to all players, present and potential. Therrien is in charge, he is infallible and he is god. Price is probably already thinking of where to sign in 2 years. Why would he bother staying here now? The only guy on the team probably happy with the trade is Patches. No one to upstage him now by actually showing up each game and trying. But also no one to take the heat when he screws up late in the game.

Just a few days ago I really believed, even with MT, they were just one top-6 signing away from being a legit contender in the whole NHL. Now the team is much weaker, I have no hope that scoring will be addressed, and the GM and owner have come out to be even dumber and more self-centered than the coach.

Loyalty is just another name for 'sucker'. I'm not going to feed MT and MB's vanity.

Hey Guys and Gals! I'm back from trying to conquer Mactaquac...and I failed in my mission to break 90. First, let me explain: this course is 600 yds longer than my home course with absolutely HUGE greens. They hadn't been mowed and were soft from last night's rain and really hard to figure out the speed of any putt. Anyway, I'm not to bent out of shape about my 95 on a course I'm unfamiliar with. I shot an 81 last Friday at my course and hit in the mid 80's semi-regularly.

I'm curious as to what Marinaro said about the PK trade. Did he slight someone or was he just too big a personality for BBB and AF to deal with? Apparently David Poile and LaViolette (aka Eddie Munster) can't wait for him to get there.

Anyway, Welcome Shea Weber! I hope you take the Jackal and the Rat's heads off early!!

Oh! If my memory is correct I seem to remember the Shaved Ape being a pretty dominant defenceman from 30-36 years of age. Hopefully Weber can repeat that. And, I'll bet the first guy who tries to run Price will pay a price, no pun intended.
