They had a good run but once Lidstrom, Datsyuk and Zetterberg were done you knew this was coming. They'll get a good pick this June and start the rebuild. I wouldn't be surprised to see Stevie Y. back there as GM someday.

  2. The sooks over at one of the SFU networks (whichever Jeff O'Neill is on) are still beating the dead horse that is Gretzky/Gilmour '93. "Odog" has a video of himself interviewing the participants in what is clearly the most blatantly missed call in the history of sport. Gilmour still seems a bit butthurt about it. Gretzky is a bit 'fuck right off' about it, but "sure the leafs could have beat the Habs' about it to appease the SFU. Fraser admits to missing the call. The only incorrect call in the history of hockey it would seem.

What if that POS Williams didn't take Koivu's eye out? The Habs would probably have won the series. The canes certainly wouldn't have won the cup. I'm not certain but i think that was Fraser and he was only about a dozen feet from the infraction in clear view. Now THAT is something worth crying about, but we've moved on.

leafools still crying over spilt milk 24 years later. leaf beating the Habs back in '93? Not a fucking chance. If Gretzky and company couldn't beat Saint Patrick neither could Gilmour and Cujo. That was destiny baby, you could feel it all spring. I never changed my spot on the couch for that whole run.

    5. I remember we were down 2 games to nothing. I had a friend over for game 3. At the start of overtime, I wrote down a number and name and stuck it in my sock. When we scored the winner, I pulled #25 Damphousse out of my sock and showed my friend. He may have been the first guy to mutter WTF. I continued that superstition for the remainder of the playoffs. Never guessed the correct overtime winner again, but I always had the right team!

  7. One last note about that Jeff O'Neill piece of gargage video. At the end you year Fathead Bob stating something along the lines that "for those 2 years in 93 & 94, Doug Gilmour was 'as good as it got' in the NHL". Yeah, I remember him taking home the Hart (nope, Lemieux and Fedorov), the Art Ross (nope, Lemieux and Gretzky), the Conn Smythe (nope, Roy and Leetch), leading in goals (nope Mogilny/Selanne and Bure), leading in assists (nope, Oates and Gretzky), his team winning the Stanley Cup (nope Habs and Rags). Wait, he won the Selke in '93. He was the greatest. Fuck Lemieux and his 160 points or Selanne and Fedorov with their putrid 76 goals. Killer was the greatest of all time! In reality it was that one moment in time as a Hab when he shattered the penalty box glass. That was his one moment of greatness.

One more memory from '93. After the second game in QC, one of my fellow Habs fans came in to my office and cursed Patrick Roy up and down, saying he had blown it the previous 2 or 3 seasons against Boston and he was fed up. I let him rant and when he finished I remember saying "this isn't over yet". We all know what happened after that. I have a vivid memory of Pierre Page leaning down screaming into Mats Sundin's ear and him just staring off into space as they were about to be eliminated. Did't he get traded to the leaf for wonderful wendel that June? Good times.

    1. Good stuff.

Early 90s saw me working some 12-14hr days. Didn't change in 1993 but I was on a somewhat secret NDA'd video streaming project using ISDN. Funny thing, I got to choose what we streamed to the engineers in California and Raleigh. I choose the 1993 Stanley Cup Finals. I didn't miss much of any games. I even got to 'record' 'offline' a bit of the game. Anyways, my colleagues in CA and NC, a lot of Canadians, enjoyed my play by play as we streamed data between Canada and the USA. Man was I fucking kiddy. I was with a half-dozen Nortel/BELL techs as Carbo raised the silver mug.

FWIW, and some of you know this, I named my son (born in October) Patrick.

  30. Back from my last night of curling. Nice 9-8 win in a game with no defence. Played against my fellow mate/skip from my team as we mixed teams up for 'fun' night. Of course, when you win in curling you actually lose because you have to buy your opponent a drink. So losing is fun.

Anyway, a final '93 moment from me. I was living in B.C. My first born arrived Feb 27th. I was a scared shitless 24 year old novice father with no baby experience. Living on the west coast was good as the west coast games were on at a 'normal' time, though the Montreal games were strangely early. Anyway, Ellen and I watched a lot of hockey that spring as I paced around the living room getting her to stop crying. I said it's ok, it's only 2 games. By the third round we had a pretty good routine anytime she was awake for the game and I barely missed a minute. I remember that playoff year like it was yesterday. And I've conveniently forgotten everything they've done since.

  53. on the previous wrap around it wasnt a great play by patches. he was actually lucky the guy shot it prematurely and it went at igloo instead. that kinda soft defensive play by the captain, no less is gonna kill this team later. at minimum, patches shoulda dove to make sure that puck doesnt come around that corner.

reminds me of a play by ak47 which cost a game (maybe a series) and even by saku another year...

    ReplyDelete
  54. the Maritimer10:23 PM

Watch Carolina come in and fuck them over Thursday night. They will not take these shit teams seriously.

    ReplyDelete
  55. speaking of softness... CHe was soft on the blueline. all he had to do was step into him and gCHuk woulda had a free puck to skate onto.

gCHuk then had a chance to do the exact same, but he was also lazy and tried a sissy stick check. guy makes him look stupid twice.

the BBQ is next up and b/c he is slow reading the play, all he can do is poke and screen. if he was more aggressive, he woulda been farther up ready to step when gCHuk flopped down.

igloo was simply caught way too deep. gk with low confidence will play deep in their nets.

if kidG, blanCHe, CHip, or CHarger we on the ice that guy woulda been seeing stars instead of being the first

    1. since I cant speak French, one of my greatest regrets and if thats one of them well its kinda Sinatra like. Nevertheless just from what I read in the comments about them they strike me as the Hockey version of Black Lives Matter. If the player is not pure laine he is crap. I have no emperical study to prove it, but it seems the only hockey market in the world that slags their own players is Montreal. Mostly thats a good thing, even though I would never say a disparaging word about any player wearing the bbr.

I've got no problem with #27 playing RW. He is a shooter. Put him on the half wall like they used to with l'Artiste and let him fire away. Danno has limited offensive skills but the guy is way better at playing center gCHuk. I remember a few years go Moey and I agreed that he should not be at center, he was getting destroyed game after game. Some players have the instincts for it, he doesn't, plain and simple.

  70. gCHuk was fucked over since his first game. If he is a centre, you play him as such and he develops. I have no problem with him on the wing. Hope the kid, because he's still a kid, does well.

    Replies
    1. the Maritimer9:48 PM

I believe he will be a great winger. I think his natural instincts are to shoot. That being said, MB will probably include him in a package for a center. I wouldn't be surprised if he went to Colorado for Duchene.

Putrid leaf win in Columbus and leapfrog over the broons to 3rd place. They also open up some space over the Islanders. The SFU will be insufferable.

      Delete
    2. Agree moe. No secret that he was also fucked over because AF's favouritism for DDD and he only got to play centre when DDD was injured last season forcing AF to put him there and he excelled. But gCHyuk got injured this year, there was another chou-chou come to town for AF because of his foxhole relationship with DGMB. AF knew he drafted him in Chicago and when gCHyuk came back from his injury this year AF pounced like a jackal on the opportunity to stay in the foxhole using excuses not to put him back on the top line. It's also no secret what DDD and Dano have in common.

Add to that all the media bashing gCHyuk gets, DGMB stating publicly that they don't know if he'll ever be a centre, the position they expressly drafted him for, one has to think the kid's head/confidence is getting/got messed up. It's no secret who the media would prefer to see succeed and carry the label of #1.

You know who else isn't great on faceoffs? McDavid and I'm sure he isn't ripped apart by the media.
