  1. Forgot to say R.I.P. Niki Lauda.

Like Gilles Villeneuve, the man was fearless, back when F1 was actually exciting.

I was in Monaco in 1996, as part of a corporate gift, and attended the race. It was incredible. F1 hasn't been exciting in years.

    1. Having said this, I will be up early to see the Monaco race and follow that up with the Montreal Grand Prix.

Outside of these two races, the rest are boring.

  3. Another great thresd moeman! I knew Scotty Bowman was the Blues coach for many years, and Big Bird is a consultant today; but Carbo, Doug Harvey, and Plante all wore the crest at points as well.

I am rooting for St. Louis as a Habs fan - it's a gimme.

From last thread - just caught wind of the Kadillak signing. A solid piece to have in place. I expect a bit of forwsrd turnover to come before October. Still need a top D too.

  4. Gruding congrats to the Raptors. The fact that it will drive America bonkers overcomes the boost it will give the SUFA. Millions of Amercians will once again learn about a base 10 measurement system and milk in plastic bags.

Greetings FHFriends! I just got back from an annual golf trip in Rustico, PEI. Great time but 4 rounds in 3 days is tough for this old golfer.

Nice thread, I too, hope St. Louis wins the Cup biut I won't be watching any games. The Memorial Cup is tonight and then hockey season is over. Nice silver medal win for Canada at the Worlds. Go Mooseheads!!

Another Habs/Blues connection is Red Berensen, played for the Habs before the original draft and Red was picked by the Blues. He used to hold the record for most goals in a single game until broken or tied by Sittler in the 70's. He has been the head coach at Michigan in NCAA hockey for decades and continues to churn out prospects for the NHL.

I don't think I want the Habs to draft Raphael Lavoie ... looks like a Drouin clone ... they already have one too many Turnover Machines. Draft a D instead, should be a safer pick.

Can I just say, the Raptors and Drake ... who cares, more puffed up preening self-important wannabes. Get lost.

  8. Dang 3-2 Huskies. Go Moose!

Played my first round yesterday Course was soaked, but greens were good.

I actually like this Kawhi Leonard cat with the Raptors, he doesn't suffer fools gladly. Those fools being the SFU. When they ask the same dumb questions over and over, he lets them know.

    Ack 4-2.

Back to the Raptors. Drake is fucking embarrassing. Sit the fuck down. Just another self centred CotU self promoting fuck.

  9. Oh yeah agree with the M about Raphael too. Hey if he's still there mid 2nd, sure. But he would be a big gamble at 15 and would probably be more like McCarron than not, would be my fear. I see them grabbing a D too. Maybe that Ville Heinola kid from Finland.

  10. Speaking of the Blues, I watched the Remastered documentary Devil at the Crossroads about Robert Johnson on the weekend. I thought it was a little thin on the history of his life, but then again it seems like there wasn't much to be found out. And could have had more of his actual music. Interesting and very tragic short life, died because he refused to stop playing 'the devil's music'.
What is very interesting is the bit where they list all of the musicians who have died at the age of 27 since then too, making you wonder if they all sold their souls. Hendrix, Joplin, Morrison, Cobain, Winehouse, etc.

I like Teasdale too. He probably won't be a scorer at the NHL level but he will be a load for any defenceman to handle. I like the tough look as well. I say a good 3rd line guy down the road.

      Delete
    3. Abbandonato looks like a solid prospect, we should not take anyone who is not at least a good jr skater. We blew it with Le Brow, and Big Mac, lets not make that mistake again. From what I read Michalagilo Rafeal is a decent skater, he has Tom Wilson potential. That said their will be safer pics, at least one of bronberg a sweedish d man with world class wheels, Moritz a big bad Germanm with big man moves, and a Russian Sniper.

    2. When they acquired Domini, and I noticed he has Type 1 diabetes, I thought that might be a negative. How stupid and wrong I was. I should've looked no farther than my old school friend who has lived his entire life with the same affliction, but never let that stop him. Still likes his beer (but knows how and when to check his blood sugar) at 50, and always aware he is one mistake away from an early demise. Didn't stop him from traveling the world, even to far-flung parts of Asia. It just always kept him honest and prepared, constantly. I think that is exactly the kind of character Domini has, and gCHuck can only be told about as it sails from one ear out to the other.

So, the M, I heartily concur!

No real bias to rap, especially great rap, (does drake actually do rap?) but the guy totally represents the arrogance and egomania of all things tranna. No disrespecting his or anyone's legitimate success but not on my playlist.

    1. No shit! Drake is Drab!! If he was an ice cream flavour, it'd be run raisin (artificial, no booze and half a scoop of raisins). Rap can be awesome and exciting and primal like punk rock (hey there, Childish Gambino!), or it can be so bland the NDP braintrust loves it and finds the blandest song (already translated into Muzak), Cellphone, and think that'll encoolify their bland leader Thomas Mulcair.

Fucking useless awful, self-important no fun crap. I have no clue what makes him popular. None.

      Delete
    2. It's gotta be a case of brilliant marketing, and Aubrey isn't alone in that category. A lot of stars are made, not born, because of marketing. I too could not name a Drake song, except for Cellphone and that's only because the GSW coach made a joke about it in his presser...I still didn't get it until I remembered Alec Baldwin did a Trump parody of it on SNL. But that may have been a different song? IDFK? or care.

It's not a popular trait around these parts, but I still like the Raptors' team. Just hate everything else about them, #1 being the media coverage (even the CBC daytime programs are littered with Raptors stories). #2 being Drake.

      Delete
    3. CBC radio that is. Programs like Q and I think Sunday Edition even drank the kool-aid.

    4. As I understand it, Drab Drake is properly categorized as hip-hop, but regardless, he and the COTU mediots are the only things pukable about this Raptors team and their appearance in the NBA finals. Jack Todd wrote a good piece about them and the sad state of Drake sucking up all their oxygen (somewhere on montrealgazette.com).

I just never got into watching a basketball game. Fun to play, meanwhile.

    5. the Maritimer8:05 PM

When I would watch the odd basketball game it was when MJ was still playing. I used to cheer for the Knicks but they've been shit for many years. I don't really care one way or the other if the Raptors win. If they do the Toronto media will be insufferable but it would be good for Canada I guess to pull the rug out from under the Americans. Meh, whatever.

      Delete
    6. Like the M I really don't care if the Raps win or lose, but what a revelation watching tonight on ESPN (via ABC). Professional unbiased game calling is a real treat. The sfu guys for both networks constantly complain about non calls.

And just now espn mentions the Habs as 5 in a row winners. Doubt you'd see that on the 'Canadian' networks.

Professor Legasov gave a chilling explanation to what went wrong in the control room on the night of the explosion and a great account of how the nuclear reactor system operates. His refutation of the Soviet system got him censured and it was quite an exchange between Legasov and the head of the KGB.

    1. I'd sign him before I'd sign Duchene. The question is how much for how long? Should a medical evaluation show that he is healed up and strengthening (see BBQ), then I say get him. Can't hurt the powerplay and it would shut up leafoolSFU that say UFAs won't sign in Montreal. If people thought PFK was big in Montreal, EK could rip that to shreds ... and yes Mme. EK est très belle. She'd fit right in with the World's title of 'the City with the most beautiful women'. Hi Moey.

    2. Lapresse.ca notes he'll need $M11 and shoots and plays right. Dish is half the cost, close to equal value. BBQ is 7.5 Million. I say nyetski

      Delete
    3. Dish is playing some of his best hockey right now. 2 more years at 5.5 per. I could see him being traded for a decent return if EK were signed. He's a Detroit boy, trade him to the Wings for Anthony Mantha.

    4. Disagree SiM. I think EK knows he isn't worth $11M/per.

    5. the Maritimer4:49 PM

Well now, finally something worthwhile to talk about. I've avoided the finals like the plague, when the Memorial Cup tournament ended hockey season was over as far as I was concerned.

I don't know moe, I think EK is looking for something like that sum of $11mil, that's Drew Doughty money and he thinks he's as good as DD. I would be OK paying him that, he's 28, a 7 year term (the max he can get from Mon) takes him to 35, he should be still effective then. Or, they can pay him all up front like the wretched putrid leaf did with pajama boy. It's all just details.

EK plays the right side like the bbq, I would say Petry would have to go and Weber can drop down to the second pair, that would probably be a good thing for him, less minutes.

Karlsson will at least take bbb's phone call unlike pajama boy.

      Delete
    6. I think EK would/will take less than $11M per. No other team would offer that anyways.

Front-loading the contract is doable and I think Molson said just today that money is not an issue, with him.

For me, I want EK to want to be a Hab, long term. Enjoy the benefits of the money, the city, the fans, the ....

No worries as skilled players deserve it.

I think Dish stays until he is UFA eligible.

I don't and never have bought into this LD RD bullshit. Just some fucking Blabs via SFU hockey nerd garbage.

To this day both Lidstrom and Chelios laugh at Blabs and his incredible hockey mind.

Should the Habs find a way to sign EK (to a decent contract), I will be FHFucking stoked baby!

    9. SiM I think if EK is signed, SSR might be some money heading out the door anyway.

      Delete
    10. See losing a CHaracter guy like that could be a problem. Didn't this group gel like nobody's business last season? i'me iN! just went to the K. Next season, we have EAP and on D: BBQ, Meat, Juulsen, Kadillak, Dish, B9 (Folin's new nick, a la Folic Acid), (JB? JB2?), (Radar?), (X-Man?) and if EK is added, fine, but someone gets dropped, and the chemistry is thrown off. Now, they're all pros, and they should be able to handle it. Just saying that if these signings of X-Man, B9, Kadillak, and the hope for Juulsen are all straight from the Bergevin heart, he'll have some difficult decisions to make.

I may wonder if Druid is still with us in October, but I don't think SSR is going anywhere as long as DGMB is at the helm.

      Delete
    11. He gave up two second round picks for SSR and watching how he's brought KidKo up to be a man, no way do we let SSR go now.

      Delete
    12. the Maritimer8:03 PM

It would be insane if bbb pulled out all the stops and somehow signed EK and Duchene. Obviously, some players would have to be moved out but I think we Habs fans would lose our minds and the SFU would be slightly worried that Montreal would be better than their wretched, putrid leaf. As for the players who have to leave (hopefully Turnover Machine would be one of them) as the late Red Fisher used to say: "It's not personal, it's business."

The business of winning, that is.

      Delete
    13. I think you're right, the M, but first of all we need the backup goalie situation fixed. AlZZZner not bought out yet? Odd, but maybe (seeing the brutishness of this playoffs) it doesn't hurt to keep him in reserve, with the X-Man. But who goes? Leko maybe? I imagine EAP and Kidko will become a force. Domini, too. Tuna might be a guy to move, with his value upped and all, but in the end, we do have a lot of mid-high talent being paid very marginally for what they bring. I recall the Turgeon-St.Patrick duo, with their salaries an echelon or two above the rest of the pack, becoming a problem for team cohesiveness even before the Detroit blow-up. Ridding PK seemed like a way to forestall that sort of history repeating. Would Duchesne be that big a bonus? Would EK? This is the question.

Man, I love how Hamlet it is to be a Habs fan.

      Hablet.

  34. I am stoked to get a better nic for EK and EK. I leave it in the hands of the almighty bergy. He is arguably one of the top ten players in the NHL, so I say roll the dice always bet on Sweden. Its a fantastic shortcut to Nirvana. I would trade Dish for a scoring winger. Draft Rafale to bash heads and score. Win the cup and live happily ever after. So sad the season is over for the shaved ape, can we not have a gif of the impact?

If you have ear buds get what I got for Daddy day a six pack of COMPLY FOAM ear buds.

  35. Now he's bigger than Naslund, but a potential nick is LV2 or LPV2 en francais.
Or IKEA because he's been reassembled but has some missing parts, like half of an ankle bone apparently.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I'm back and forth on the idea of signing IKEA to a big long term contract.
But then you read Engels' article and at the end he lists the players currently on rosters of other teams within the division:
"The Atlantic Division is brimming with talent: Auston Matthews, Mitch Marner and John Tavares in Toronto; Nikita Kucherov, Steven Stamkos, Brayden Point and Victor Hedman in Tampa Bay; Patrice Bergeron, Brad Marchand and Charlie McAvoy in Boston; Jack Eichel, Casey Mittelstadt and Rasmus Dahlin in Buffalo; Aleksander Barkov and Jonathan Huberdeau are potentially being joined by Artemi Panarin and Sergei Bobrovsky in Florida; Thomas Chabot, Brady Tkachuk and Erik Brannstrom are on the rise in Ottawa; and Dylan Larkin, Andreas Athanasiou and Filip Zadina anchor a young, talented core in Detroit."

With the exception of Ottawa and Detroit, the Habs are clearly behind in the top-end talent pool. So it's a big Jeezly risk, but if you can sign him, you have to don't you?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. no teams beat talent, but talent can beat teams.I would try to package both. Look if your making 6 or 7 or 10 mill a year its nothing. You cant buy winning a cup, so say to both take 8 for 8 we make the trades and plan the parade.

      Delete
    2. Hablet. Exactly. To pay, or not to pay? That is the question.

      Delete
    3. I love Engels, most of the time. Because he is sane and balanced. But he is also somewhat infected with the sportsnet vibe of pushing the fanbase to stupid conclusions, in this case, based on cherry-picking and subjectivity. Who's to say our Domini isn't of equal scoring threat to a Bergeron or Duchene? Not signing BIG players to BIG contracts pulled our Habs out of the sewer and into contention. The ones for whom the BIG money matters are the last ones we should consider anyway. That speaks to inate selfishness as a primary motivating factor anyway. Sign the ones with the BIG hearts instead. PFK was both, btw, so a hybrid.

    4. st paddy: what SiM said is exactly what im thinking. brayden point, charlie mcavoy, casey middlestat, thomas chabot, erik barnnstrom, andreas athanasiou, filip zadina!?! come on... please... first off... this is NOT top end talent. second... there are lots of habs who are better than those guys.

like SiM said again... dont discount the talent BIG hearts bring to the dance. small guys, with huge hearts on tiny contracts is what brought us to this point. dont do something CBJ and roll the dice unnecessarily

If you have a chance to acquire a player of Erik Karlsson's caliber you have to seriously look at it. I don't think it will upset the chemistry of the current team or derail bbb's 'plan' to 'retool' on the fly. Duchene is another story. If bergevin can fit him in, so be it. 42. That's right, the M. More here are following the Impact, Grand Prix, and sliding into summer. Not taking anything away from Raptors fans, but no fever being whipped up here over this run. Just like when Jays are COTU darlings. --SiM

And another thing... the fucking SFU are so focused on the officiating and the mistakes that the refs make or the blown calls. Like, that's never happened before in the history of the playoffs? The refs are human. They make mistakes. It happens so fuck off about all this fucking SFU driven bullshit about referees. Get a bunch of automatons with cameras to skate around and call every fucking little thing that occurs. See how long it takes to play a game. What bunch of whiny fucking bitches the SFU cocksuckers are. Get over yourselves ffs.

sorry for not checking in after our beloved were denied entry to the dance.... been busy at new job, but ive been quietly sneaking a peek once in awhile. good to see the gang is still going strong through the summer.

    just wanna say:
    1. happy bruin's elimination day!
    2. happy international gin day!
    3. happy us day (if karlsson comes aboard)?

  46. I agree with 1 and 3. In tropical British Empire it was very common to drink a quart of gin a day to prevent malaria.

I am excited about the next 30 days. Montreal has no CHoice but to go all in on IKEA. No I dont mean refurbish the Bell Center, I mean the Swedish D man who was put back together and has some parts left over.

Our first 3 picks are going to be studs. I still say its the Renaissance. Would that not be the longest nic ever?

No offense Steve, but after the longest, coldest damn spring I can ever remember, I want a good 3 months of heat before I start thinking about hockey again. They're still issuing frost warnings down here ffs.

  54. Hah! Rask made two saves on four shots. Hat tip to my old Concordian colleague Geoff Baker, who notes the last time z team overcame a first period 2-0 deficit in Game 7 of a Cup final was rhd 1971 Habs, vs. the Hawks.

  55. Having completely failed to take his man, Ratface selfishly left the ice for a line change on that Pietrangelo goal too - with 10 seconds on the clock when he made that veteran decision. Suck it, Broons! --SiM

  63. So my boss is a big broon fan. So is his brother. They're in the 35th year of an annual pool with 9 buddies. Winner gets $500 and 2nd place gets his $50 back. He's pretty much had his winnings spent for the past 6 weeks...until this series. Before this game he was up by 1 on his brother. They each have 3 broons and his brother might have tyler bozak. So he was worried . Then he says oh yeah so and so is 6 points behind and has 3 blues i think it was. So unlless the blues win 6-0 as he snickers and trails off. Can't wait to hear how this turns out. Be the cherry on top if he loses out on the big win.

  64. Excellent. That officially leaves one winless franchise since the 67-68 season.
