ReplyDeleteLoved the first one, I gotta see it! Love Liam.
DeleteMrs. Maritimer and I are going to see Argo tomorrow night. Apparently Canadians had nothing to do with the embassy hostages rescue back in '79 according to Ben Affleck. I'll let you 4HFer's know how it all turns out.
DeleteQui-Gon jinn is really getting around since peace has spread through out the Empire. You'd figure tho that he'd pull out the old light sabre once in a while not just to impress but to stay sharp.
DeleteA Star Wars referance +1

Well, I'm glad all you 4HF'ers enjoyed the game last night. Did the Habs win?;)
ReplyDeleteOK, ARGO is pretty darn good. I didn't realize a lot of the work to rescue the hostages in Iran was orchestrated by the CIA and then buried as classified information until Clinton released it in '99. Still, the Canadian embassy was the only place the Americans were able to get into as they were turned away by the Brits and others. It was extraordinarily brave of Ken Taylor to do that with the hate that Iranians had towards the Americans. This is a movie worth seeing and I thought the scene stealer of the picture was Alan Arkin as the washed-up Hollywood movie producer. Even though we know how this movie ends you are tense the whole time watching it.
I remember watching all this unfold back in 1979-80 and also remember feeling really proud to be a Canadian after the rescue. I also think the hostages who were there for the duration of the event were extremely lucky that Jimmy Carter was president instead of Ronald Reagan who would have handled it much differently I think. Not all, if any of them probably wouldn't have survived the inevitable invasion. Think Libya, Grenada, etc.
I also remember seeing some events on the news, but details I forget. I do remember that thinking then that Ken Taylor was a hero.
