Yours truly is going to both the game and the gala today. With some primo connection seats at both events. I expect to meet many a '94 Expo. Will report back later.
Expos and Alouettes two of the greatest team names in sports. Any flicker of love I had for baseball was fanned in Montreal. So we clinched. To late to fire eMTy. and some crow to eat for both him and DDD. Its possible coaching at the NHL level is not as easy as it looks.
Same here. What? It is confusing with 4 teams all tied there at the bottom, but if all of them win their remaining games they'd be at 98 - the leaf can get 94 (they play each other here and there, but there's still 3 pt games). Habs currently have 91. Hell, even the Devils and Sens could mathematically catch the Habs. I feel like the crowd singing the Ole song with 2 minutes left in 2 goal game. SHUT UP SHUT UP SHUT UP!
OK O'man's confirmation was all I needed. I think moe is just wrong (well on this point). I have used my editing powers to throw some question marks into the post title to hopefully take away any jinx. sorry moe, and forgive us hockey gods
Thank you moe for the nice tribute to Gary Carter and the Expos. I used to watch every Expos game I could back in the 70's and 80's and would listen on a local radio station that carried the games as well. I miss them to this day. I know Claude Brochu along with Jeffrey Loria and David Samson are reviled but the two people I blame the most for their demise and despise to this day are used car salesman Bud Selig and carpetbagger Jerry Reinsdorf who orchestrated the '94 strike that killed the season and sent the Expos on a spiral they never recovered from.
As has been mentioned before, the Toronto controlled media also conspired to get the Blue Jays to the forefront of baseball in Canada and knocked the Expos right out of the spotlight. Fuck them and fuck the leaf may neither franchise ever win anything ever again or in my lifetime anyway.
29, you better be cheering for New York, Gary Carter's "other team". I never liked them either but, they are the lesser of two evils.
Oh man the knives are out in Tarranna and the leaf are being carved up. So much fun to watch and so interesting to see how they get out of the stupid corner they are painted into. The princess at 8 M for 8 years ha hah ( a Simpsons Ha Ha)
I watched almost all Expos games from maybe 89-94. My heart was shattered so much with the 94 strike I trailed off after that. Saw my last live Expos game in 2001 the weekend before 9/11. Still teach my friends the "Expos rallying cheer" of slamming the empty seat next to you (there was always an empty seat next to you) up and down.
Got see several Jay games during their prime in the early 90s. I didn't have any hatred for them since interleague play (sacrilege as it is) wasn't around yet. An amazing team, a mini dynasty. Once my dad got us into a box suite through his work. I mentioned off hand that I didn't want any of the pizza because I only like pepperoni on mine and magically there was a steaming hot pie brought to me within 10 minutes. I was probably too young (12-ish) to fully appreciate it, though. By that I mean I barely touched the free booze.
I did a baseball road trip of Korea last summer with 2 buddies. Saw every team, all 9 of them (though 3 are in Seoul, but it was still one hell of a week). Nothing like a day at the ballpark, though Korea was having it's worst heatwave in several decades and I nearly passed out several times (not exaggerating). I learned how to McGyver an ice vest to keep cool, though.
I also wanted to say that one of my fondest memories growing up was watching Dennis Martinez pitching a perfect game against the Dodgers in 1991. I remember it like was yesterday. El Presidente, El Perfecto!
Crazy that in all my hockey watching years I never saw a penalty shot live until about 4-5 years ago, yet I saw a perfect game in baseball so young. I know, I know, I always seemed to just miss the penalty shot and it became my Polkaroo after a while.
Like O-man, I watched the 'spos religeously until the '94 strike. Went up to see them in May of '02 when the writing was on the wall, just to be sure to see them before they were gone. There may have been 10000 at the games. Wasn't the same as the only other time I saw them in 1988. Good crowds, great ball and my first visit to Montreal. I was 19. What an eye opening weekend!
Love the shot of the guys with the 'Kid' sweaters on. Classic.
Snuck out of the ballpark early because frankly, who cares. It was really fun though.
AND i was rewarded with my early departure. As I am going into the metro, who is walking next to me but (no joke) Yvan Cournoyer and Reggie Houle. I have no idea why they were taking the metro. Shook both their hands and rambled in French about thanks for all you've done for the city and the Habs. They smiled and were friendly. So the highlight of the baseball game was meeting two Habs after. Delicious irony there.
Just so we're clear you did NOT kick Houle in the nads for the Roy trade? Realizing it's not totally his fault, being a rookie gm in a tight spot, but he DID pull the trigger and got hosed. Just confirming you did NOT bagtag him?
Like most of you here, I grew up loving the Expos. Listened to them on the radio too whilst at the beach. Fave players were Raines and Cro, Kid too. Saw many, many Expos games and felt like shit when selig fucked them over. loria and samson were in it for the money but mean ol' bud is to blame. Kinda liked the jays of 92 93 but lost interest in baseball soon thereafter. Only teams I've had a passing interest in were the Reds and the Mariners. FWIW, I always tried to get a sports game in when travelling the USofA. Coolest place was Wrigley. Hockey wise SJ Sharks Arena (and their Cow Palace in SF).
Worked today and just now crashing with some Jack Daniels+mustard wings and an Aussi Chard. Prof I worked with today brought some amazing tapas for lunch.
The hotdogs at the Big O were pretty good. I think they were steamed Lesters. Not Forum steamés with flat toasted buns but good. Lived an hour from Toronto so we got in a few games. Shit food.
I lived e Spaceman. Pretty sure I read a book about him back on the 80's. I remember my first ever expos game at Jarry Park...and I remember my grandfather taking me to the Big O to see the last expos game I remember some years later. Good times!
So what is the deal then...are the Habs in or not? Should be soon.
And the uk switches to BST tonight so I will take advantage of my last early game for a while.
When you watch the cockroach mediot montage you are left with the impression that their leaf is leading the league. Fuck I so want these fuckers out of the playoffs.
I love that the nhl game centre gives you a home and away option to watch the same game. Tonight the panthers broadcasters are already showing the match ups and talking fairly evenly about both teams. The bcc feed is still in pause mode...not even going to bother switching back. I will take the panthers feed thanks very much!
Funny, listening to the old Crotch, he pointed out exactly what I said last Monday regarding protecting Price in Boston. Most coaches will do that with their number 1's. I begrudgingly give Therrien credit for that.
2 goals for the wings just like that. What a fucking clown organization led by Bozo Phangoof...what a fucking klutz. He couldn't carry PK's jock strap.
One of our lab assistants is also a, wait for it, pastry chef. So today we had a bit of lab prep and I popped in. She made, wait for it, individual/mini coconut cream pies.
Gee, mclame doesn't sound very enthusiastic about the Habs victory. Says they are marching towards second place in the division. If it was his leaf going for second he and his fellow hnic leaf fans would be talking about a sure fire Cup win for the leaf.
Eight. Straight. Losses. What a fucking monumental collapse. And glorious to behold. To think a short two weeks ago the leaf were in second place. leaf shadenfreude abounds.
Hey, there it is. The Habs story. With commenting. But I'm sure the leaf comment section will eat up all their memory. BWAHAHA! Suck it leaf, leaf fans and leaf mediots. SUCK. IT.
You know, I've been struggling in the middle of my office hockey pool, destined once again to finish out of the money. But it just so happens I have 2 players, that if they keep scoring at this pace may get me into the top three - Von T & Patches. Keep 'er goin' boys! *Note: the loss of Datsyuk has really hurt.

Watched the highlights of goals for the DET TOR game (funny that there aren't any highlights from any other game, but I digress). Apparently the opposing team having someone screen their goalie and tip the puck into the net is just "more bad luck". That kind of shit and seeing all the leaf jerseys in the sold out arena tell me nothing's going to change in toronto for another 50 years. They deserve it.
Boy, this is fun. The laff fans troll and trash the Habs over and over from game 1, season after season and the leaf are sooooooo hyped by the media that it makes their fall into the shit-pit even more enjoyable.
Everytime I think we're too hard on the fans, the media does something else really stupid and arrogant and I can't help feeling like they totally deserve it. As I've mentioned several times, I know many leaf fans and they are so delusional that they seriously need a wake up call, too. I do feel a bit bad for the fans, but it's up to them to start calling out the BS and making MLSE more accountable.
Based on tsn posters, there are a few very classy fans, but the majority are arrogant, sick fucks, some of who simply repeat the rhetoric spewed by the gta mediots - 'bad luck' being the latest. 8 losses in a row sure looks good on them and their media.
Even IF the leaf wins all 6 of their remaining games in regulation (if!), three of these teams would have to do worse in their remaining games for the leaf to make the playoffs:
Columbus would need to be worse than: 4-3-1 Detoroit: 4-3-1 Washington: 6-2 (TOR holds tie breaker) NJ: 7-0-1 (Ottawa would tie the leaf if they go perfect, too, but the leaf would have the tie breaker)
Even if the Wings, BJs, and/or Caps go .500 in their remaining games the leaf would have to be better than 5-0-1 to get into the playoffs.
I tried to post something like, "By blaming luck the leafs will continue to be terrible. The fans, media and organization needs to be more realistic if they want to build a winner". As usual, it was not printed because it's not pro-leaf and mentions the delusion. You have to wonder how many sensible realistic opinions are being blocked. It's all part of TSNCBC's attempt to create a narrative about the team (and the Habs, too. Really, two games in a row with no comments, and only 2 get through tonight). Man, it's just hockey and these guys have Pravda level censorship going on. Makes you wonder about the bigger stuff.
@Orangeman and juce, I admire your willingness to go to the pro leaf sites and defend the Habs interests against the tunnel vision leaf supporters. But, why bother? You'll never change their minds or get them to admit the Habs are a better team, it's like pounding your head against a wall. Just sit back, enjoy what's happening and let those fools rant, knowing that you have the high ground.
On March 13, the Toronto Maple Leafs were three points up on the Montreal Canadiens. In the last 16 days the Habs have GAINED 16 POINTS on them. Beautiful!
I have a one bird two stoned proposal. Secure the province from the PQ and evil PK. Keep Vanek in Montreal. The liberals should promise to give the James Bay Project to Austria if he signs for 7 years with a hometown discount.

Apparently the opposing team having someone screen their goalie and tip the puck into the net is just "more bad luck". That kind of shit and seeing all the leaf jerseys in the sold out arena tell me nothing's going to change in toronto for another 50 years. They deserve it.
ReplyDeleteBoy, this is fun. The laff fans troll and trash the Habs over and over from game 1, season after season and the leaf are sooooooo hyped by the media that it makes their fall into the shit-pit even more enjoyable.
DeleteEverytime I think we're too hard on the fans, the media does something else really stupid and arrogant and I can't help feeling like they totally deserve it. As I've mentioned several times, I know many leaf fans and they are so delusional that they seriously need a wake up call, too. I do feel a bit bad for the fans, but it's up to them to start calling out the BS and making MLSE more accountable.
DeleteBased on tsn posters, there are a few very classy fans, but the majority are arrogant, sick fucks, some of who simply repeat the rhetoric spewed by the gta mediots - 'bad luck' being the latest. 8 losses in a row sure looks good on them and their media.
Delete*very few* classy fans
DeleteSo after tonight, there is no way the leaf can catch the Habs. Not that it was going to happen anyway, but now Math says so.
ReplyDeleteGeez I am so upset, I didn't realize today was Earth Hour. Damn!
ReplyDeleteSo did some quick math, because I hate the leaf:
ReplyDeleteEven IF the leaf wins all 6 of their remaining games in regulation (if!), three of these teams would have to do worse in their remaining games for the leaf to make the playoffs:
Columbus would need to be worse than: 4-3-1
Detoroit: 4-3-1
Washington: 6-2 (TOR holds tie breaker)
NJ: 7-0-1
(Ottawa would tie the leaf if they go perfect, too, but the leaf would have the tie breaker)
Even if the Wings, BJs, and/or Caps go .500 in their remaining games the leaf would have to be better than 5-0-1 to get into the playoffs.
It warms my black heart.
Math, it hurts my brain, so thanks for that!
DeleteIts the Vanke Equation
DeleteDropping in to say it was beautiful to see our own Tim Bozon drop the puck in B.C. Good luck in your full recovery kid!!
ReplyDeleteAw, I missed that, totally forgot, I will look it up.
Deletetsn has only post 2 comments, leafs have 5 pages and I'm sure that's not even the half of what posters tried to put on that thread.
ReplyDeleteI tried to post something like, "By blaming luck the leafs will continue to be terrible.
DeleteI dont wonder about the bigger stuff, I know
Delete@Orangeman and juce, I admire your willingness to go to the pro leaf sites and defend the Habs interests against the tunnel vision leaf supporters. But, why bother? You'll never change their minds or get them to admit the Habs are a better team, it's like pounding your head against a wall. Just sit back, enjoy what's happening and let those fools rant, knowing that you have the high ground.
ReplyDeleteOn March 13, the Toronto Maple Leafs were three points up on the Montreal Canadiens.
