Wings win last night over the philthy has weakened Broons chances to make the post-season, even if they beat the Wings tonight they only tie for points but the Wings have a higher 'row'.
@ the Maritimer, nice article on the falling ratings... make goods are useless, the agency/client view is they aren't getting what they paid for unless Rogers can guarantee running them during a show people like... Fire Strombo bring back Maclean.
@inthereds, I agree Strombo is not cut out for that role. I don't know about mclame coming back as he is for sure a leaf blower. The whole snet/HNIC thing is out of whack somehow, most of the "experts" are miscast or just ridiculous (Stock). If I was Bell/TSN I would offer to take that NHL package off their hands for a reduced price. Rogers should have stuck to baseball and junior hockey. I can't see them surviving another 10 years of failed ratings.
Let's not forget his comments that French refs shouldn't officiate Habs games. Why did he never state that Ontario refs should not work Leaf or Sens games? or Canadians should ref Olympics or when Canada plays? Using his logic, English refs should not be officiation 29 other teams if the Habs are the opponent, American refs should not officiate when the 27 American teams play. Totally out of line for someone in his position to make and ended up showing his true colours.
@ juce no problem, says comment was removed on my screen. To both you and @ Maritimer, Maclean was treated so poorly by Rogers/CBC IMO deserved better. Perhaps not the guy to move the show forward to the new gen. but better than a VJ via City TV. Agree that the Sportsnet "personalities" are miscast (or just plain bad and should be taken out back and shot). Anyone other than a Montreal "talking head" should not talk about the Habs, period. Cox, Dreger, the punching bag Kypyos etc etc... awful. I'm fortunate(?) that the Rogers package I have often allows for NBC/SN simulcast. With those teams commenting, often what they say makes sense and has limited bias unlike oh, say Healy et al.
@inthereds, MacLean lost me years ago when one Saturday night during a Montreal/Toronto game all he wanted and did talk about was his wretched leaf and Cherry was more than willing to follow his lead. I complained to the CBC ombudsman about the leaf bias but got nowhere. It only went downhill from there as every HNIC broadcast was essentially a leaf promotion show. You may recall here at this blog we (well mostly moe) ridiculed hnit at every opportunity. Here in the Maritimes we are in the Habs region so we mostly get Chantal Desjardins and some Hab haters doing studio coverage with John Bartlett and Jason York doing the games. It doesn't feel right somehow. This horrible season has allowed me to not listen to any of these clowns for the last 5 months.
@intthereds Agree Stombo may not have worked out but he did have experience in the sports field : "Stroumboulopoulos also said most people don’t realize that he started his career in sports and “learned to interview by interviewing athletes.” Although on what level I'm not sure. CBC / HNIC are supposed to represent Canada, but they do not, they represent the Leafs. You can thank Bettman (and Rogers) for Maclame's lessened role, who when he chose the Rogers deal, said CBC would have to deal with Rogers.
" This misstep was compounded after Bettman shocked the CBC executives last November when he told them Rogers now owned the rights to every NHL game broadcast in Canada for the next 12 years. Their only way to stay in the game was to negotiate with the winners. Many staffers feel the subsequent deal, which has the CBC carrying Rogers’ version of Hockey Night on Saturdays for the next four years with no revenue coming to the public network, exacerbated the fallout of losing the NHL package." http://www.theglobeandmail.com/sports/hockey/hockey-night-in-canada-how-cbc-lost-it-all/article21072643/?page=all
As for Healy, I still hear him chanting over and over 'Kessel just needs one more to tie the game" USA vs Team Canada in Sochi. I think the score was 1-0 if I recall. He chose to root for USA over Canada putting his team's colours ahead of his own country. Shame for a public network who is supposed to represent Canadian taxpayers and all Canadian hockey fans.
Sorry, the deleted comment was my oopsies, I wanted to start over and correct my typos, added a thought and forgot all about the typos anyway, basically it was same.
I was doing some math the other night. The Habs started the season 19-4-3. Had they simply gone .500 from that point on, they would have 95 points. In other words, they'd be tied with TB for 2nd in the division.
They'd go 1-1 in their last 2 games, finishing with 97 points, which would automatically qualify them for the playoffs (the most the broons can get now is 95). Heck, that might have given them home advantage in the first round!
Instead, they went 17-34-3 (.343). Let's put this in perspective. 53% of Montreal's current points came in the first 26 games of the season. They had the same amount of wins in the first 24 games of the season than they've had in the last 56.
Wait! you say. It's because of injuries!
Well, sure. Except the biggest void of non-points took place when they were relatively healthy (minus Price and Gallagher for a while). They've gone 12-14-2 in their last 28 games, which is pretty close to .500 (and would still leave them in a playoff position). This with more injuries, after the trade deadline, with an AHL team by all accounts. It's just the middle 26 that fucked them (5-20-1).
It's all the goaltending! But wait. In the first 30% of games, they scored 38% of the goals. It was that middle part that it all dried up. It's back more now, even with more injuries and people I've never heard of in the line up.
So this narrative that they just couldn't do it without Price is bullshit. The narrative that it's the injuries is bullshit. Tough schedule? Bullshit (the last 28 games have had wins over Dallas, Washington and a California trip).
The fact is, this season was salvageable in December. Hell, even January. Instead our boy MB decided to tuck in with his buddie in the foxhole and wait till next year. When nothing will change. I want to find my post back then about Reimer, and how effective he could be for a low price. Yes, Reimer who just got his 3rd SO in 8 games for the Sharks. But you know, Scrivens was fine.
Because why bother to win. You'll have PK, Patches, Gallagher and Chucky forever. As this season proved, injuries never happen. Meanwhile, one inch either way and PK would be in a wheelchair.
Excellent analysis Orangie. You are bang on, MB bailed on his team back in December. Pittsburgh, conversely, made a coaching change, rode out a little rough patch after the transition and are riding a revived Sid Crosby (who apparently chafed under Mike Johnson) into the playoffs in style. Credit GM Jim Rutherford for recognizing something was wrong and acting. That's experience coming through, which MB hasn't enough of. He better recognize something this summer or he will be unemployed with his foxhole buddy shortly after.
Earlier I was listening to Marinaro ad Knuckles discussing PK. I can't disagree with Knuckles assessment... PK has exceptional skill and skating abilities but needs to "manage" his game a little better. Be more aware of the game situation, etc. I think Ottawa have to do the same thing with Karlsson.
Good luck to young Lindgren tonight, I hope the Habs play a good defensive game and help the kid out. I'm off to the Sea Dogs game tonight, round 2 vs. Cape Breton and Steve's wet dream Dubois. Or was that Drouin? Steve has many wet dreams...
I've got no issues with Strombo being a host. He's knowledgeable and a refreshing presence. Their panelist/analysts are pretty much all pathetic. The one exception is (the he is on) Adam Oates. I have zero time for old biased coots like ron and don. I'd like to see the numbers for the hyped Sunday game. I am enjoying watching snet crater. They have let their biases get in the way of a decent product, geared towards hockey fans. They have made it very difficult for non-leaf fans. Their fucking leaf is on every Saturday and on most Sundays and Wednesdays. The odd game their leaf wasn't on they made sure to dig up ex-leaf players no matter what. They've forced fans to tune them out. I know they are a private commercial organization but their effort in the first part of their 12 year deal is putrid. All sizzle, no steak. They do not know who their audience is.
I loved watching the latest episode of H I/O. Nilan likes to stir and he does stir the PFK pot. Apparently he doesnbwantbto play for MT any more...and who can blame ,him. But the real story is one I touched on s few weeks ago. The Habs spent the season telling us all lies. About everything! I do not trust DGMB and that song come back easily. MT has to be fired at the end of this season. To my mind, so does DGMB. As for tonight...lets hop Charlie29 comes up bib. Too late for me...so just fucking win and make SF a real hood one for us all. We deserve it.
@DarrenDreger As suggested on TSN's Insider Trading, expect Marc Bergevin to confirm Michel Therrien's return as Habs coach either on wknd or next week.
So ah, DGMB confides in the SFU? Is he a brother-in-law or a cousin?
Hi FHFriends. I just got back from the game at Harbour Station between Saint John and Cape Breton and had the pleasure to speak briefly with Mr. Trevor Timmins, director of player personnel with the Habs. I just welcomed him to Saint John and wished him luck in the upcoming draft. I told him I hoped he managed to get one of the Finns and he replied he hoped to win the lottery. So do a lot of other people Trevor.
Some kid named Dubois got a goal and an assist for Cape Breton in a 4-1 win.
If MB brings Therrien back I will literally puke. If true, I guess they will go down with the ship together.

I am fucking pissed off. Its the Pannama effect going fire on ice. Fuck this fuck maipulation which is part of the DNA of sport. Especialy the NHL where one guy owned two teams of the orginal six. His name was Trump. When you are playing a crooked game, shot yourself in the head or play the game, change the game or just take money from the holi poli cause they have transferred real things into marketing. We should all be fans of Kanye and Kim cause that is the world the NHL lives in
Best wishes to Jacques Demers who suffered a stroke.
