RIP, Mike Bossy, one of the greatest scorers of all time, the first to match Rocket Richard's 50 in 50, a Montrealer, and above all, a class act all the way.
We can only dream that Caufield follows in Bossy's footsteps as a goal scorer who inexplicably fell to #15 in his draft year. You look at the numbers MB put up in junior and the players that went ahead of him (no offence to Mark Napier) and I wonder why. I was only 8 at the time, not tuned into the draft. Always curious how teams view players like Bossy who can put points on the board at will but maybe wasn't defensively responsible in junior.
Isles lost to Pittsburgh last night and had to cross the border to come into town late last night. Habs rested meanwhile. Can't wait for whatever tribute Chantale's Comms team must be working like crazy to put together for tonight.
It's like a refreshing wind has blown through the Habs organization. Props to Geoff Molson for coming to the conclusion that a reset was much needed and putting competent people in place, Chantal being just as important as the hockey ops staff.
Price gets the start tonight. Welcome back Carey, you are indeed some good news in a long, sometimes dreary season.
Regarding why Mike Bossy fell in the '77 draft, one of my former co-workers (and fellow Habs fan) who was actually drafted by the Red Wings back in the 60's, said the knock on Mike was his skating. They weren't sure if he could produce at the NHL level. Well, Bryan Trottier and Clark Gillies remedied that perceived flaw. That's what CC needs, he has Suzuki but I don't think Anderson can retrieve the puck like Jethro could. Geez, that's 2/3 of that line gone with Gillies passing away recently as well. No complaints about Mark Napier taken by the Habs that year, he was a highly ranked prospect, one of the Baby Bulls in the WHA, before 18 year-olds were allowed to be taken in the NHL draft. Napier was a better skater and stickhandler, Bossy the pure shooter.
@Saint Paddy, my Sea Dogs played a statement game last night on the Island, beating Charlottetown 8-4 after taking a 6-0 lead. They also beat St. Patrick's No. 1 ranked Remparts last Sunday at TD Station. Good times!
Welcome back Your dreams were your ticket out Welcome back To that same old place that you laughed about Well, the names have all changed Since you hung around But those dreams have remained And they've turned around Who'd have thought they'd lead you (Who'd have thought they'd lead you) Back here where we need you? (Back here where we need you?) Yeah, we tease him a lot 'Cause we got him on the spot Welcome back Welcome back, welcome back, welcome back Welcome back, welcome back
Just saw Michael Farber's bit on him on TSN and he was very clear in indicating that Bossy was only one of five players to score 50 in 50. "You know who" isn't on that list.
I forgot he retired so early due to back issues (from 1980s cross checks no doubt). The numbers he could have put up if he could've played another 5 or 6 seasons...
Michael Farber was the reason I applied to j-school at Concordia. Never had a chance to have him as a prof in the end. A true poet of a sports journalist.
I wish Carbo and Damphousse were available every game. Marc Denis is great. You'll learn phrases like il rate le cible, and un autre revirement from him every game.
He and Lecavalier both want to help build something here with their bud, Kent. They're getting the cance to do that and I think they relish the challenge.
BTW, a quick props and congrats to Halifax's Mattea Roach, reigning Jeopardy champ, playing game 7 or 8 tonight. 23 years old, smart as a whip with a hell of a memory. Sadly living in Tronna now but also spent some time in Montreal.
I've only watched the second period but this game has a very familiar vibe. Carey Price in goal, Habs outshooting the opposition 2 to 1 and no score. Yep, seen this movie before.
Mike Bossy was my fave non-Habs player ever.
ReplyDeleteAmazing to watch and such a class human.
Very few like him in today's game.
RIP
DeleteSame here moe. While I hated the 80s Islanders, I was always a fan of Bossy. Such a pure goal scorer and seemed so genuine and down to earth.
Fuck cancer.

ReplyDeleteFuck cancer indeed.

R.I.P. Mike Bossy, the best pure goal scorer the NHL has ever seen.

ReplyDeleteAnother #22
DeleteWell well well, John Lu reports TFS being prepped at practice to getcset for his first start of the season tonight, by all appearances.
ReplyDeleteGood news on a sad day in hockey.
DeleteIsles lost to Pittsburgh last night and had to cross the border to come into town late last night. Habs rested meanwhile. Can't wait for whatever tribute Chantale's Comms team must be working like crazy to put together for tonight.
ReplyDeleteCHantal deserves huge recognition for how much she has done in so little time.

Nice tweet for Bossy by none other than, Larry Robinson @19LarryRobinson
ReplyDeleteJust struck me the resemblance between Mike Bossy and Tom Petty. Two greats who left us too soon.
ReplyDeleteNo adjustments needed to these lyrics.
ReplyDeleteWelcome back Carey.
Welcome back
Your dreams were your ticket out
Welcome back
To that same old place that you laughed about
Well, the names have all changed
Since you hung around
But those dreams have remained
And they've turned around
Who'd have thought they'd lead you
(Who'd have thought they'd lead you)
Back here where we need you?
(Back here where we need you?)
Yeah, we tease him a lot
'Cause we got him on the spot
Welcome back
Welcome back, welcome back, welcome back
Welcome back, welcome back
Golf clap.
DeleteNoice song of the day.
DeleteLove it! No Gabe Kaplan moustache though, please.
DeleteGonna be fun watching the sfu choke on what 50in50 actually is.

Only player to score 50 nine years straight.
DeleteThat puke in toronto couldn't carry Bossy's jock strap.
Loved Farber’s analogy to Waiting for Godot.
DeleteMichael Farber was the reason I applied to j-school at Concordia. Never had a chance to have him as a prof in the end. A true poet of a sports journalist.
DeleteAwesome stuff SiM.
DeleteAlthough I appreciate that RDS covers Habs games, they still have some of the worst people in their coverage.
ReplyDeletePure scum like mario tremblay gaston therrien norman flynn, amongst others.
DeleteI wish Carbo and Damphousse were available every game. Marc Denis is great. You'll learn phrases like il rate le cible, and un autre revirement from him every game.
DeleteMa parole !
DeleteWho's the fopl I keep hearing say "Micahael" Bossy. C'est Mike, ostie!
DeleteNo idea.
DeleteLemieux, Lafleur, Gretzky and Bossy never taunted an opponent’s fanbase when they scored.
ReplyDeleteHabs have to do everything to sign/keep MSL for a long fucking time.
ReplyDeleteHe and Lecavalier both want to help build something here with their bud, Kent. They're getting the cance to do that and I think they relish the challenge.
DeleteAgree 100%.
DeleteMaybe they regret not getting the chance to play in Montreal. They can build a legacy another way.
DeleteOVs glove tap with TFS is something else.
ReplyDeleteAs Bob Marley sang, ‘turn the lights down low’.
ReplyDeleteNice. Tasteful. Check out the 22 patches on the Isles' jerseys. Good stuff.
ReplyDeleteHey mclame, THAT is how you do a "let's stop and listen" bit. Habs fans are the best.
ReplyDeleteI think the anthem singer picked up that jacked from the lost and found, left behind by Dom.
ReplyDeleteThe Kingpin is now coaching the Islanders? Oh, it's Barry Trotz.
ReplyDeleteAnd Skeletor up top keeping an eye on things. Wait, that's just Lou.
DeleteDoes that make Chara Dr. Doom?
DeleteNo Hoffman on with Nature and CC. Already an improvement on the first unit
ReplyDeleteUntil the boos, no idea chara was playing.
ReplyDeleteBTW, a quick props and congrats to Halifax's Mattea Roach, reigning Jeopardy champ, playing game 7 or 8 tonight. 23 years old, smart as a whip with a hell of a memory. Sadly living in Tronna now but also spent some time in Montreal.
ReplyDelete👍🏻
DeleteChara's check tonight is Whiskey it seems. Jokes?
ReplyDeleteBig guy. Can probably take a lot of shots before he goes down.
DeleteSome goal support for Carey please and thank you.
ReplyDeleteHe’s used to not getting much.
DeleteSome Hab needs to punch a linesman in the face.
ReplyDeleteHabs have been kicked out of the face offs almost every time tonight.
DeleteThis George Lucas-named goalie is bothering me.
ReplyDeleteI've only watched the second period but this game has a very familiar vibe. Carey Price in goal, Habs outshooting the opposition 2 to 1 and no score. Yep, seen this movie before.
ReplyDeleteIt was almost four. Shoe-in brain fart and it's catching like COVID
Delete3 on 0? Incroyable!
ReplyDeleteShameful.
DeleteDéjà vu all over again.
ReplyDeleteOnly NHL refs coukld possibly have missed our 6'4" goalie getting flipped head over ass, and see nothing wrong.
ReplyDeleteYep. This is all too familiar. In the end, it's for the best but sure woulda liked a W for Carey.
ReplyDeleteWatch them lose 6-5 tomorrow...
ReplyDeleteAfter scoring 7 against the Devils the Habs have only five in the last four games, one in the past two. Where's the scoring gone?
ReplyDeleteNice standing O for TFS at the end. Love our fans.
ReplyDeleteOnce again, the Habs demonstrate they need an injection of high end talent distributed through the team.
ReplyDeleteGo put some ice on that knee Carey.
