These are all quotes by HuGo. OK, they are by Victor Hugo but they all pertain to our HuGo and this week in one way or another. Except for the last one, that's more about the mediots and fans in general...
Per Frank Seravalli (on Twiiter): "Head athletic trainers typically do not make news, but Jim Ramsay leaving #NYR after 28 years to go to #GoHabsGo is a coup for Jeff Gorton and team. He’s widely respected as one of the best in the business."
Finally, I think we can bid adieu to Jean-Luc Picard, enjoy LA!
Welcome. Alex Newhook, another 22 year old reclamation project (center) for Coach Marty. Well done HuGo! Now, bring on MM, although I feel he will be gone before pick #5.
I don't mind that HuGo gave up those two picks. The Habs seem to be over saturated with prospects at the moment and didn't need to draft 11 more this year. Those lower picks would be 4-5 years out anyway. People seem to think Newhook has a fairly high ceiling, he should compliment the young nucleus Hughes is assembling. Also, Hughes was Newhook's agent so he has lots of knowledge. I like the trade.
And there it is ... PLD to the Kings 8 X $8.5, big coin for a 60 point guy. Nature and Whiskey are the ceiling, the Habs should be a very balanced team in a couple years, unlike the top heavy and overrated leaf shit pile.
Congrats to bargainbinbergy on finally getting his man.
Remember, bergy tried to move up to get PLD in 2018 but Jarmo fucked him by taking PLD at 3 instead of Poolparty. I can't remember what was on the table to go to Edmonton for #4.
Listened to Aaron Ward on TSN690 earlier. He says Newhook is great at hunting down opponents in weak positions, adjusting smartly and taking advantage, that it's great he so recently had the experience of seeing what it takes to go through the four rounds, and tgat he couldn't get the ice time or PP time with such a deep forward group in Denver.
Hughes isn't done either. Rumour has it he will drop back to 7 or 8 if Michkov is there at 5. Washington or Philly want him. Should be some good offers I would have to think. The habs should get Leonard or Dvorsky at those spots. However, if one of the Ducks or Sharks take MM, that would place Fresh Prince or Leo the Lion or Fantilly Lace into HuGo's mitts. Oh! The intrigue! Can't wait to start drinking tomorrow night!
Did PLD play the Habs? Maybe via his agent Brisson (think the guy is a shyster for always dropping the Quebecois angle). Good luck to him in LA. Glad he isn't a Hab. HuGo is not just a seriously smart duo but they are making things fun again. IHUGOWT.
As I mentioned earlier, I think Luc Robitaille, Brisson and of course bargainbin all played a role in PLD's decision. Hey, like you said, good luck to him in LA, I'm just happy HuGo stuck to their guns and refused to give up DaCH to scumbag Chevldayoff. Fuck him.
HuGo has to start unloading some bodies soon. Arizona has to spend about $60mil to reah the cap floor. The Hoff and GI Finn would help them get part way there.
Mike @HabsLaughs So the difference was Montreal didn't want to give up Dach and LA was cool with giving up Vilardi. Fine by me. Good on the Jets for taking the Kings for a ride. They had zero leverage at the start of it and played that perfectly. Big AAV.
"Treliving working hard to keep 'core 4' together."
Excellent. Continued futility. Why the hell wouldn't that team consider trading Willy for Hellebyuck? Baffling, but I love that they want to continue to handcuff themselves.
Unless HuGo finds another Dach-type trade to be made, keep the 5th pick and in order (depending on likely availability), Michkov, Smith, Leonard (possibly Carlsson?).
My issue is they didn't take the BPA. They still want to play the defence first game. Sure hope this guy can defend against all the elite forwards that are picked in this first round. Wasted opportunity in my opinion, which isn't worth a damn.
The guy laughing all the way to the bank has to be Jarmo of Columbus who had a #1 center drop into his lap. Second has to be Briere who couldn't believe his good fortune. He should send Kent Hughes a nice single malt scotch for the gift.
2022 1OA Habs: We need a center! Scouting People: Step right up, we have two possibly elite ones for your selection. Habs: Oooh, look at that big kid who can't keep his head up, we'll take him!
2023 5OA Habs: We need scorers! Scouting People: Step right up, we have an excellent selection, many, many to choose from! Habs: Oooh, look at that tall kid that plays D and shoots right, we'll take him!
Bottom line, Reinbacher is probably a good player, just not at 5OA. I get it they didn't want to take Michkov, but Leonard or Benson made more sense.
For me, unless he pulls off some kind of super move today, that shine on Kent Hughes' head is a little dimmer today.
I feel similar with this 5OA pick like I did the last time in 2005. I wanted Kopitar and was shocked to see him fall to 11 (I think). But though CP didn't bring us home a cup, he got us close and played as the best tender in the league when healthy.
I've not seen most of these players play other than a few hi-lites so I feel I cannot make assumptions. But it will always be a letdown when you take a D (or a G) when there are offensively gifted players available. We can only hope that time will prove that HuGo knew what they were doing all along.
Question: Can anybody on the Habs get 80 points? This year? Next year? Hasn't been done since 2008. Defence has always been a priority in Montreal. Doesn't matter who the GM is. They will not risk taking an elite scorer with a high pick. Counterpoint?
I think Suzuki will be a point per game player. Maybe Whiskey but he's more likely a 40/30 guy. Sadly Josh Anderson should be the perfect fit to complement that line but he just hasn't taken that next step. You'd think though that there is somebody to fill that spot that will have those 2 players put up as many or more points than the Kovalev-Big Tits-Pleky line.
3 of 9 picks goalies. That's weird. Only 2 Canadians drafted. 3 Americans 2 Russians but not THE Russian. 1 Swede 1 Austrian who we can only hope is the next Cale Makar but reading the scouting reports he is more of a Ryan McDonagh or Joe Pesce.
Hughes said they would take BPA with the pick. He did not. They picked for need, basically the whole draft. That's fine. He may end up with the best D in the NHL in a couple years. Won't help if they can't score goals. Ask Carey Price.
I know one thing. After these last two drafts, I won't ever get my hopes up again.
Somebody pointed out that Jack Eichel was Vegas' leading scorer in the regular season with 66 points. Same # as Suzuki. First thing they need to do is stay healthy to figure out exactly what kind of team they have.
It'll be a few years if we know whether Wright and Michkov would be better rather than having Slaf and Orville...even if we do know the excitement level would be higher. If they draft Wright they likely don't move out Romanov to get Dach...so it also depends on his development.
Anyway I expect a quiet summer. I hope Hughes can move some of the deadwood but we'll see.
It's been foggy and rainy here for over a week and doesn't look to be letting up anytime soon. Doesn't bode well for the Snowbirds first Canada Day appearance in Halifax.
It's been crappy weather here as well. Played golf last Saturday, zero times since. Could have played today but no power carts allowed because of all the rain this week. Might get out tomorrow.
Been doing lots of reading about HuGo and his scouts latest draft and I would say it has been just about universally panned. I think the bloom is off the rose. If Newhook delivers they may be somewhat forgiven. As for the #5 pick, I blame management not the kid. And after they took him, they were literally throwing darts.
Yeah the worst part in all of this is the hate the kid is apparently getting online. Habs fans can be such douchebags. And social media is a damn menace to society.
R.I.P. Alan Arkin. Huge talent. Every little role he brought something no one else had. Another excuse for me to rewatch So I Married an Ax Murderer, one of my favourites (which also includes great turns by the late Charles Grodin and the late Phil Hartman).
Happy Canada Day (and moving day here in Quebec for thousands). Thunderstorms a coming. I watched King Richard and it was a bit long and a bit less Will Smith and more of the talented actresses playing the young Williams sisters would've been my choice, but still a solid, entertaining biopic.
Ryan Reeves signing with the wretched, desperate leaf and old enemy Pretzel Lucic returning to the hated beaners, X-Man is licking his chops. I hope that shoulder is fully healed by October. Should be some fun games this upcoming season!
Thanks to Joel Edmundson, the last of bergy's 4 Clydesdales. That was a pretty good top 4, it was too bad that the Habs didn't have enough scoring to take advantage of it and Price's great run that year.
I've got the frenzy on, nothing else to do on another rainy day.
Yeah, much ado about nothing, Reeves does nothing for them. I will say, the panelists on the toronto sports network are far better than all the knobs on sportsBet.
WPG is probably on his no trade list (it is apparently on most players') but wouldn't it make sense for the Leafs and jets to swap Hellebyuck and Nylander? Might need draft picks or prospects involved but that would seem to solve a problem for each team.
Terrible coverage with the weather changing the tee times but sadly our guy Adam Hadwin lost in a playoff hole. Good news it was to one of the good guys from down south, Rickie Fowler.
HuGo sign a former Gorton high draft pick Lias Andersson. Isn't he the guy that threw his WJC silver medal into the crowd when the Swedes lost to Canada?
Some fans seem to think JD will recover his game in Colorado playing with MacKinnon. Can't see it. He refuses to play in traffic, if his play is only mediocre it will be an improvement from what I saw.
I see our old friend Domini has signed for a year with the wretched, laughable leaf. I'll bet his dad is super happy. So, Max, Ryan Reeves and 'the Core 4' with no defence and suspect goaltending. Great job Brad, keep that losing streak going!
Hard to believe that a team spending to the cap probably won't make the playoffs.
I think that leaves Captain Hook and (Y)2.0 as the last two to get a contract. Somebody has to go from Hoff, Dvo and GI Finn. Shiny Happy Pitlick will probably have to go to Laval.
I'm curious if HuGo have approached Chicago or Anaheim to take one of the Hoff, Dvo or GI Finn off their hands, those two teams have a ton of cap space and could probably use a couple of legit NHL players to fill out their rosters. They aren't looking to compete any time soon and will want to draft high again next year for their rebuild.
I'm sure HuGo has some irons in the fire. The Habs have 11 picks again in 2024, they won't need all them. I don't know about Price, I think they hang on to that LTIR space for themselves.
I pick the Habs to win in 2025. Rod the bod, yes he made us sit up and notice, but he is a small beer compared to OUR FRENCH GUY. Martin St Louis is going to make mincement out of the NHL with all the weapons he has not only assembled, he is personally traing them to win the cup. I would not want to play Resident evil against this guy.
Ouch! This thread is sizzlin' hot! Bravo moe!

ReplyDeleteCongrats to bargainbinbergy on finally getting his man.
Cherry on top for Bergy, he uses the #2 pick he gave to Arizona in the Dvorak shlamazal to get PLD.
DeleteSo in his mind he basically got PLD for KK.
Remember, bergy tried to move up to get PLD in 2018 but Jarmo fucked him by taking PLD at 3 instead of Poolparty. I can't remember what was on the table to go to Edmonton for #4.

Woulda been a crap fit adding PLD, plus the Kings gave up a lot, AND have to overpay. Glad they have Newhook now. IHUGOWT indeed.
DeleteAgreed on HuGo's smarts. They play chess while bargainbin bergy could only play checkers.
DeleteThe M, don't Armia and Hoff have limited NTCs that would surely include the Arizona DDs (Desert Disasters)?

So long Munster. Thanks for the '21 run.
ReplyDeleteHe was a fine Bergy-era Habs D. Thank you, Munster. May your back hold up well. Onward!
DeleteThanks to Joel Edmundson, the last of bergy's 4 Clydesdales. That was a pretty good top 4, it was too bad that the Habs didn't have enough scoring to take advantage of it and Price's great run that year.

DeleteYeah, much ado about nothing, Reeves does nothing for them. I will say, the panelists on the toronto sports network are far better than all the knobs on sportsBet.
DeleteA few old friends have found new homes. MaxPac joins Munster in Wash., EAP is a phucker and Mikey Reilly is in FLA taking Radko's spot.
ReplyDeleteAlso, the Habs are now cap compliant after the Munster trade, $450k to the good. Once the Hoff or GI Finn are gone, will be even better.
Odd, no mention of anybody signing Drou-mez.
ReplyDeleteWPG is probably on his no trade list (it is apparently on most players') but wouldn't it make sense for the Leafs and jets to swap Hellebyuck and Nylander? Might need draft picks or prospects involved but that would seem to solve a problem for each team.

DeleteI was gonna say MAYBE Jo's friend Nate might convince the AVS to take a flyer on him. I hope he finds his game in Colorado.
ReplyDeleteNate MacKinnon drafted 1st overall in 2013 is now the highest paid player in the league at $12.6M.
ReplyDeleteJonathon Drouin, his Halifax Mooseheads teammate, drafted 3rd overall that same year just signed a 1 year deal to play with him for $825K.
Different paths. Different outcomes.
But I truly hope he finds his game and stays healthy.
