Bit of tid, whilst at Sun Microsystems (may they R.I.Pieces), I took in a conference in San Diego and we toured and partied where they filmed Top Gun: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0092099/locations
We did the Naval Training Center, Miramar Air Station and the Kansas City BBQ bar/resto. Actually got to sit in one of the F-18s, play football in a B52, the 'boys' did some fly-bys for us at sunset, took in the 'Oxygen' bar and the gyroscope (didn't puke). The then-tech-booming company gave the Navy folks a nice cheque for a cool $1M and fed/partied up almost 3000 of their people. I may be anti-war but when you meet people that are proud to serve, its not difficult to be pro-military. The music that night was Jim Belushi's Blues Brothers Band.
Say what you will about Tom Cruise but I cant think of him making a horrible movie. Everything he has made lately from Ghost Protocol to Oblivion have been fantastic. DDD flunked out of fighter pilot school, because the sensor on the ejection seat could not be set low enough to detect his weight, and he could not see over the joystick. Go Habs Go, PFK show Karlson what it means to play in the other 100ft of the ice.
Think I will go watch the Sea Dogs/Mooseheads game tonight instead of the Habs and the 'Turds. I've got a feeling the Habs are going to pull one of their stinkers tonight. I might catch the third period. If Gryba has to take somebody's head off tonight I hope it's DD instead of Lego. Then they've got the Panthers, the team they can't beat on Monday night. Oh, God help us.
Habs are better then the Sens, last season Anderson stole the games we should have won and Therrien let the fat walrus get into his head and got out-coached.
Back in the land of kimchi, shoving strangers in public without a word of apology and reasonable winter temperatures. Seat next to me was unoccupied, which for a larger man with very broad shoulders on a 14 hour flight qualifies as a Christmas miracle. I can drink anyone, and often any group, under the table but one generic over the counter sleeping pill knocks me right out, and with the aforementioned shoulder and leg room the 24 hour total trip home was almost tolerable. Now enjoying duty free treats to make me tired enough to eventually sleep by Monday morning wake up call.
Side note: Canada is too cold. Like a lobster in slowly boiling water you may not realize this. I was too once in your position. But if you leave and return you realize that our home and native land is actually a Darwinian test. Get out while you can. You know Manitoba is colder than Mars right now? That's not ok.
I would say in 2014 I'm more Tom Skerritt than Tom Cruise. gruff, tough yet lovable father figure who can still bring it when necessary. But if I get to sleep with 1980's era Kelly McGillis, I'll play Tom Cruise
Man that Swe-Rus game was a bloody (literally) blast. What fun hockey. Russians deserved better
Anyway, back to hockey (which I got to watch much less of in Canada than here, but anyway): CBC put out this mini-doc, about Team Canada's selection process. It's not too in-depth since it's only 30 minutes, but from the sound of it Price is pretty much starter and PK is on the team. To kill time before the Juniors semis: http://olympics.cbc.ca/news/article/considerations-for-steve-yzerman.html
I guess I should put away my mini tree. And by that, I mean I should push it slightly back from its current position atop my wardrobe (I have no storage).
Completely off topic, but the IIHF Division I Group A tournament is taking place here in Korea this April and I will be attending. Austria, Hugary, Japan, Slovenia, Ukraine and Korea. I'll definitely be going to the Ukraine v Korea game with my Blue and Yellow. Ukraine is STRONG! I'll go to as many games as possible, though.
I have seen those words before, but never in that order. Is this the tourney that gets one team into the WJC next year? or the WOrld Championships? I swear I have no clue
There was a team here for the Asian League team here that I saw a few times (it was in the 'burbs, but my friend lived close by), but with the Olympics coming Korea is taking hockey seriously now. There's two newteams that draw on army guys and they're very professionally run. Haven't been able to see them yet but I'll report back when I get the chance.
@29: Yes, I believe the winner of this group replaces the loser of the top tier group for the WC, as per Euro soccer leagues. Note that Austria and Slovenia are in the Olympics this year. Ukraine used to be strong, or at least strong enough. I had an amazing talk about it with a man who sold me my Blue and Yellow paraphernalia in Kiev one afternoon. Truly a sad story of a proud hockey nation let down by politics and economics.
But for a real inspiring sports story, read about Kiev Dynamo and the Nazis. Here, I'll link it. Fucking right. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Death_Match
It's called "The Death Match" and that's absolutely no exaggeration. Unfortunately. Sometimes we take sports too seriously, but unfortunately this time it's no hyperbole.
First lets blame Buttman, then Fat Steve. Why do we have a defence pair named Dumba and Ex lax, how can you expect to win, do no one learn nothing from Loseman
Good on the Finns, they deserve it. Good luck to them versus Sweden. To me, Canada doesn't really deserve a medal. Still hope for luck against the Russians.
Top tier Team Canada went through some trouble in the mid 00s, but our Juniors left me with hope (and they've delivered so far). The last few years gives me nightmares of what's to come for Team Canada in 5-10 years. Sweden, Finland and Russia are passing us by.
Went to a bar with my sister last night or two nights ago...or last week...however the time difference works. Anyway, it was in the GTA and there were maple leaf banners saying that Molson is a proud sponsor of the maple leafs. I commented that Molson is the owner of the Habs, Just funny. I'm sure it's the same across Canada. Not shit talking Molson, it's just funny.
After the Transit commission employees protested saying they wouldn't wear their new unis because they contained Habs colors you'd think they'd protest Molson sponsoring their joke of a team.
I wasn't impressed with this junior team from the start and I couldn't put my finger on it until today. Way too many individuals trying to be a star. The Finns were full measure for the win (c'mon Sutter get your lower lip off the ground) and I hope they win the gold in Sweden's backyard. That being said, Fucale is a bright spot, this kid is going to be a good one for the Habs one day.
Time to go get the beans out of the slow cooker for dinner and then head out to Harbour Station.
Go Habs Go!! - don't embarrass us.
Go Rangers - embarrass the fuck out of the stupid fucking leaf and their blue ball licking cbc cockroach mediot fans!!
I, too, am in the "lazy dinner" zone. Almost embarrassed to admit this, but I have just made classic Kraft Dinner for dinner. In the microwave, no less. BUT IT'S FUCKING DELICIOUS. With beer of course
Fishcakes and jalapeno poppers for me. Was delicious. Chicago mix popcorn and a big glass of ice cold chocolate milk on the go now. Rickards Winter Lager (not terrible) sometime before the first intermission.
Ok, put it behind us, pick it up for the next 40 and take it. Go Habs Go! Go Habs Go! Go Habs Go! Go Habs Go! Go Habs Go! Go Habs Go! Go Habs Go!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
So pissed that Therrien still has a job I can't bear go watch...but thought I would drop in to see how things are going...sounds like more of the same...ATTENTION - GEOFF MOLSON! ReplyDeleteAhhh the good old days.

ReplyDeleteHave fun refreshing the page Kate.
Delete29 again?
ReplyDeleteInternet lawyers are more famous than movie stars.
BTW, watched Jack Reacher last week, really enjoyed it.
29 is our own James Franco (note to self, remember that), he's everywhere. Also, he squints.

ReplyDeleteHave to say, watching what I have of this tourney, I haven't been impressed at all by the team. Fucale is good, sometimes great.
ReplyDeleteSweden vs. Finland are usually pretty intense. A few Habs draftees to watch and two good goalies too.
