  3. It is with great sadness that the Montreal Canadiens organization learned of the passing of Mr. Elmer Benning yesterday, December 27, at the age of 77, in Edmonton.

A member of the Canadiens’ amateur scouting department for the past 47 years, Mr. Benning was a loyal and devoted hockey man, and an individual extremely respected by his colleagues across the hockey world.

The Montreal Canadiens wish to extend their deepest condolences to the family of Mr. Benning.

    You will be missed, Elmer.

  11. Big win against a team that was running three consecutive shutouts against us. Ime iN! rounded into form after the first period and didn't face too many pucks behind over 27 minutes of BBQ defense, so he may be able to start tonight again vs. the Bolts. They got another PP goal, and JB was okay too (maybe channeling some of his brother's rage?) I wonder when GI Finn is coming back?

Interesting, all the drama going on in Dallas. I don't care what kind of company you own or are the head of, you don't treat your employees like that in this day and age. What do you hope to accomplish by using public embarrassment on your top guys. Performance issues should be handled privately I would think. That being said, if the Dallas ownership wants to start a rebuild, the Habs should be a team to help them get a start with lots of Grade A prospects, extra picks and tons of cap space. I would try for Right Benn, he would be awesome on the wing with MiniMax and Turnover Machine.

  18. Tyler Sequin is on his second team where they are frustrated at his effort. Coincidence. Its just like gCHuck keeps going from center to wing. I would say we will take Right Been and throw in Radulove for Suziki and a Chevy and a ladda draft pick

    1. 100% - great effort and the Bolts are probably questioning how they would've fared if it was TFS in nets, and not a tired back-up who has apparently lost all his positioning sense and rebound control.

      Delete
  31. anti-TFS in net. Any shot was going by him. Oh Well great game nevertheless, we outplayed the best team in hockey.

  32. arrrrrrrrrgh! those idiots!

can i bitch about that 2-0 lead that should/could have been 3-0 in the first?

    ReplyDelete
  33. I have credited Bergevin for his offseason changes, but if he doesn't manage to upgrade the D (or backup goalie if TFS is out long term), it's all for naught. This version won't beat TB or Washington in the playoffs whic is what will happen from a wildcard spot, if they hang onto one of those.

    1. I think Meat is on a short leash. His plus do not outweigh his crease lightness. I am loving the ride but it looks like Bergy has his tank commander goggles on, I hope he does, cause there is no easy fix. We need at least one more amazing draft. Between Lindy and Bomber (mcnivens are always bomber pilots in the movies) we will have solid backup. To be fair it was a back to back for anti but he was finshed in the third, he was more scared than Andrew Scheer answering a question.

Yeah, I wanted them to give up 5 or less but Auntie was a hot mess tonight. Five goals should get you a loser point but, alas, 'twas not meant to be. Get a point in Dallas and I'll cal it a succesfull road trip.

We watched Bird Box on Netflix before the game, not bad, a post-apocalypse shindig, kind of World War Z like. Sandra Bullock was decent.

Playoffs, no playoffs, I really don't care, like Saint Paddy said they will get used liked a dish rag by TB or whoever anyway.

    1. I am proud they went toe to toe with a rested, superior, healthy TB team with only their tired back-up goalie being the difference. Ime iN! playing both games of a back-to-back with travel - after being seldom used in two months - was a recipe for disaster against the high-caliber scoring machine Steve Yzerman has built. Now they get to go to Dallas and face a team that is surely disheveled by their own mgmt dissing an Olympic gold medalist publicly and crassly. Watching JB stand up for his bro - yeah, the one with more Olympic gold medals than the asshole that called him out - by picking up his play? Sublime. Let's see how they finish the year.

BTW: I hope TFS doesn't go to Dallas. First week home with a newborn and the toddler wondering WTH is going on... crucial days for papa to be in the home, believe me! Massive respect for the CH organization for recognizing the importance of that and protecting their privacy. This is the one time I congratulate their lack of transparency vis-a-vis TFS's irritation injury.

      Delete
    2. In fact, I wonder if that lower-body irritation could be the result of kicking gossipy assholes out of his family's private life.

  35. I have heard it compared to the Quiet movie, which I hated, will check it out always have time for Sandra Bullock. And next to Zombie movies dystopians are my fave.

    1. I agree. I took my five year-old daughter with my boys (aged 11 and 14) to see Aquaman yesterday afternoon. I ended up taking the girl to MPR seeing it was on a different screen at the same time and was shockingly impressed. Only a bit sad Julie Andrews declined a cameo. The boys were understanding and the girl was charmed throughout, and we will be returning with Mummy in tow forthwith.

PS: the lads confirmed my guess that Marvel's Thor told primarily the same story as this version of Aquaman. As for MPR, the original had better songs, but this one has Lin-Manuel in the Dick Van Dyke role, who does a more believable cockney accent. Also, Emily Blunt was more perfect in every way. And the bit with Streep singing a song that could fit nicely on any Gogol Bordello album was a nice touch.

  37. Suzuki and Poehling both powering their respective teams in the World Juniors tourney. Oh and Romanov for the Ruskies, too. If this keeps up, better promote Timmins or something before he gets snatched.

  38. I have been downloading day and night before my 7 day trial runs out. I got this gem for the Maritime boys, I had a roomate from the east coast and he loved this song. Cant you See Minglewood.

  39. You are not exaggerating especialy Poehlingly (Pooh? PouCHes?) All the more reason to tank and build the team around KidKoho and PouCHes, Romanov how about Czar. I loved the nick for the Tampa player Drago!

Last year we drafted a 100 centers, this year lets got 50 rd and 50 ld.

I wasn't dissing the Habs last night, just tempering my expectations. They did a heckuva lot better than I thought they would against a powerhouse. Crappy goaltending did them in.

They are the second youngest team in the league with little to no playoff experience. Even if they make it, it won't be pretty. The tank is the better option at this point but, whatever happens, happens.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I hear you, the M. But the tank ain't what it used to be with the draft lottery. I listened to a replay of a pre-season interview with DGMB done by Tony Marinaro on TSN690 where he explained his (and presumably other GMs') thinking on the matter. Knowing there is still a chance at getting superior ranking to the early picks without going full-tank changes the equation. There is more incentive to have a playoff run - even if it turns out to be a short-lived one - and get your young bloods some Playoff experience, than to let it all hang out and hope the odds still work for you. At least, this explains the CH braintrust thinking. Plus, the revenue each home game brings in.

    2. the Maritimer12:14 PM

Oh yeah, it's all about the $$$. Even two home games gets Geoff a few extra mil ... to hand over to Arizona and the like.

I agree, tanking isn't what it used to be, bullshit luck comes into play now more than ever. All finishing low does is give you better odds in moving up, like jumping from 4 to 3 last season. Like I said, I'm OK with whatever happens. This team, at the very least is more entertaining to watch than that God awful shitshow last year, which I didn't even actually watch, maybe the odd time, it was so bad.

  41. Agree that this new-ish Habs team is a hell of a lot of fun to watch.

  42. Oh yeah Steve, Minglewood is a legend in the Maritimes. Especially in NS. And extra-especially in Cape Breton. Seen him live more than a few times, always a good show. Saw him, geez must be a dozen years ago for his 60th birthday bash at the Marquee here in Halifax. And somebody stole his trademark hat. It was big news. I think it eventually was returned but can't be sure.
Anyway, yeah been a big fan for a long time. Dorchester is probably my fave tune of his, but he has loads of great ones. Me and the Boys. East Coast Blues. Someday I'm Gonna Ride in a Cadillac. I could go on...
And he is the great uncle of Drake Batherson, an Ottawa Senators prospect. Which was also big news when he suited up for the Sens earlier this year.

    Now JFW in big D.
