  9. That was a very poor period. Habs looked sloppy, outmatched and spent the period scrambling trying to actually create something...but they didn't create a thing...canes will feel good knowing that they dominated that period...

  15. I've opted to watch curling whilst checking on the Habs during commercials. By the look of the shot clock, it's a one sided game. Good one to skip mayhaps.

  17. Because this games sucks and the curling isn't too close I got wondering about the KK draft. Went back in old posts and found this.
I should be pushing for the kid from the Mooseheads, but I still prefer the TkaCHuk kid at 3.

We don't like him now but I stand by it. I don't think it would have impacted the trade for Suzuki that fall. No way to tell how having him in the lineup vs KK would have impacted the next draft where they took Whiskey at 15.
Or how it would have impacted future management changes. Or if that cup run would have happened.
But I still say that was the play.
Mind you I was also still pushing for 'the kid from the Mooseheads' too (Zadina) and he's had less success even than KK.

    End musings.

Opted to watch 'Where the Crawdads Sing" with Mrs. Maritimer. Recorded the game, after the steaming pile of dung 1st period I put it on FFWD. The movie was by far the better choice. I don't think I will be partaking of any more Rocket games this season. It's no fun watching an AHL team getting manhandled night after night. I seriously doubt they win another game this year.

I was actually thinking last night, when I saw the shots on goal, if Carey was watching that game last night he no doubt thought: "I know what that feels like." Gotta give Full Monty credit, he stopped 47 of 50.

That was awful last night, Montreal literally spent the night in their own zone.

You can tell this mostly AHL team are out of gas. They simply cannot compete with the big boys anymore. As a matter of fact, all the bottom feeders are the same, getting stomped on every night now, the Tank is on for the last two weeks. Montreal should finish in the 5 hole, as I said, I doubt they can win another game. I'm praying that Bedard or Fantilli is the reward. Unlike last year these guys are the real deal, not some big kid who put up a few numbers against weak international teams. If I was Hughes I would include Slowkovsky in a deal to get a number 1 D from somebody.
And, they can't go into next season with all the smurfs, Lep, RHP, CC, Heinz, something has to give. Can't hide all of them.

    I dunno
In my mind I’m keeping Slavo
He’s a power forward and they are rare he just needs a bit of time and the occasional talking to
I agree with the smufs tho
Bob The Gainey tried that without success
It’s not a game for midgets
Whiskey has a proven track record and RHP I think is punching way above his weight class but time will tell
I think all this just shows that we are years away from being competitive
Better get comfortable in the tank
Steve once said that the necessary high pick draft quantity is three and we only have one so far
We must have faith in Hugo and pray to the hockey gods

Is he a power forward? He doesn't play like one. Hughes said he wanted a player who would be the best one in 5 years so I guess we will see. I doubt it but that's just me.

If the team can stay reasonably healthy they won't be bottom 5, possibly a .500 team. They will give Monty one more year to see if he is the guy. There is speculation Hughes gave Primeau the start in Philthy to showcase him. It could be part of a play for Carter Hart, he is just coming into his primo (pun intended) years, he'll be 25 in August. Jean Luc may play a role in all this too, he could speed things up and, if Bedard falls in their laps, all bets are off and the rebuild is on a steep fracking upward curve.

Riley Kidney, from Hammonds Plains Nova Scotia with a goal and 5 assists as moe's Gatineau Olympiques beat up on my Saint John Sea Dogs 9 zip last night. Maybe it would have been better to miss the playoffs this year after winning the Memorial Cup. Anyway, the Habs have tons of trade bait for the next couple of years. The newest Viking, Heinimen aka Beer is tearing up the AHL with 6 goals in 6 games, leave him Laval to get those guys in the playoffs at least.

  26. After HuGo shocked us with the Romanov-Dach move last year, I won't even try to pretend to know what he'll do this year. But I know even though our season is nearing its end, the off season promises to be one of the most interesting in a very long time. Like you, picking at 1 or 2 I believe fast tracks the rebuild. Otherwise it's 3 years out before this team is competitive.

  30. My take on PLD.

While I understand the desire by the Quebecois media and fans to have a home grown superstar, I don't think this is the guy.

    - before this season, his best year was 61 points.
    - 60 points in 69 games is a better pace but he is still a career 0.69ppg player (0.66ppg before this season). Is that worth the money he will want?
    - I don't like that he quit on his team (even if it's understandable because it was Columbus...and was Torts the coach?)
    - Like Drouin, I don't think he has the intestinal fortitude to be 'THE GUY' in Montreal.
    - Taking what one reads on the internet with a grain of salt, but it's been said that he has expressed his desire to play in Montreal. If this is true, then that just speaks to his lack of character, because he is currently a Winnipeg Jet and in no way should a player indicate that they'd rather be playing for a different team. It stinks of disloyalty to your current team and it hurts that team if they decide they want to try to move you.
    - If his name was Peter Woods, is there even a discussion about him? Again, I know the history and the desire but why to we have to go through this with every decent francophone player, dating back to Vinny...and probably before him (who was smart enough to say no thanks as a player)?

In the end, if he becomes a Hab I'll welcome him with open arms...until he quits on the team.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. the Maritimer11:48 AM

For what it's worth here is my rebuttal:

      - I don't recall the francophone media clamoring for this guy in particular, this was all started by his agent ... Pat Brisson? Bergy wanted him at the draft but got out-maneuvered when Columbus took him 3rd. I think he had a deal in place with Edmonton at 4th but Jarmo K. screwed it all up.
      - Not a big point getter, I don't think he gets large. He's currently at $6mil, Hughes won't overpay for him especially if there is a trade and they can sign long term. I'm guessing a little less than Nick.
      - OK, he bailed on Columbus but that was probably more Torts. He doesn't want to be in Winnipeg long term but he said that up front. Laine wanted out of the 'Peg as well, and we saw what happened in Calgary with Gaudreau and Tkachuk, hey it happens.
      - I don't believe he will be anything like Drouin and he doesn't have to be 'the guy', that's Captain Nick and to a lesser extent CC, PLD will be more like Kessel, a very good secondary player.
      - To my knowledge he has not quit on the Jets, has played hard and rumour has it he is currently playing hurt. That is no quitter. I've read shitflea is the problem in the room, this from Jets fans.
      - Even if his name was Peter Woods, I would take a big, fast C/LW who possibly could be a point per game player. As for Vinny didn't it come out that Gainey had a trade in place for him, I think it involved either Vodkov or PFK and some others but Bettman nixed it because he thought it would hurt the franchise? Pretty sure that's what went down. The Habs actually lucked out there because Vinny went down hill pretty fast after he turned 30 or so.

Anyway, we might as well accept this rumour is not going away and Chevldayoff is in a tough spot. He can trade PLD now and get something in return or he waits until next year and the player walks for nothing. I know what I would do.

      I say bring him.
He's french wants to come is 6'4" and can score.
The french pressure is his problem.
I'll tell you tho, I wouldn't open the vault for him or sign him for 8 friggin years.
I think Hugo is in the drivers seat here and he has proven that he know how to drive.
Something PLD has going for him is his age.
Being 25 he is a couple of years older than CC and Nature as well as the rest of the kids coming up and a few years younger than Powerhorse Kid G and Magic Mike etc.
So he fills a gap. Just sayin.

I have been doing some profound thinking and come up with a profound thought. Even if we had the 71 Canadiens, with all the injury we would have missed the playoffs. MSL has changed the equation. He can take a AHL player, ship dip him into an NHL regular. This magic talent may be dimished by the spectuclr of being a actual playoff and then cup contender, but I dont think so. We can plan the parade. I will not buy a fanatics anything. I will sell you my Drouin adias version T shirt for $400 us.

I have to Canadiens hockey jerseys or sweaters whatever they are called, a red one I bought I believe in the early 1980's, it doesn't fit anymore. And a white one purchased in the mid 90's probably after the last Cup win, it still fits. Both manufactured by CCM, an old school hockey company. I'll never spend money on NHL merchandise again. The one fault I have with this specific Todd article is that while he blasts Kypreos and those of that ilk and commends how Red Fisher used to do things, Jack himself didn't go that extra mile to get an actual retort from Gorton himself. That would have been the piece de resistance.

    1. Like I pointed out above, infividuals make their choices; those choices should have consequences. RBC badge over your heart? That might rankle some, but they suck it up and deal with it. Same with the pride outfit. You want to make a stand and refuse to wear it? Well fine but there should be a price. They coukda simply dressed Farrell instead, so it's stupid o the organization. They could've avoided any controversy that way. Anyway, the whole voncept is a little gimmicky, but it's close to Brian Burke's heart.

And who knows how many players are in the closet and scared to come out? Maybe this means something to them too, but when one teammate isn't on board, how does it make them feel? Like a sub-human? In Ted Lasso Season 3 they're playing this scenario out and I can't wait to see where they go with it.

That is because he is a lock to win it next year, and will end the season in Montreal five 10 and 200 lbs.
