  1. So two more of my foolish predictions failed to come through. But I'm happy for that talented Oilers team, despite my misgivings about McGod's endorsement of gambling on hockey and Evander Kane.

I would find it amusing if the 'greatest' team ever got knocked out in the 1st round. Surely that stop any comparisons to the '77 Habs team, THE GREATEST TEAM OF ALL TIME! I think the Cats, with Matthew Tkachuk and Goalie Bob, who seems to have found his game, would take down the sfu darlings.

An all Canadian Finals is buttman and daley's plus ESPN (Disney) worst nightmare. I don't care as long as you can guarantee an Oil win. However, it's more likely a Vegas/FLA Finals, pretty sure it's already in the books...

And the Kraken too! Lots of brackets busted last night. And the best news is it was two birds with one stone, Mackinnon and Marchand out means I don't have to deal with a damn Stanley Cup parade in Halifax. Hopefully Justin Barron is the next SC Parade host in these parts.

When the gales of playoff hockey came early
The team was the pride of the COTU side
Coming back from some win in Tampa
As the big wins go, it was bigger than most
With a crew and captain underpants seasoned
Concluding the series with a couple of more wins
When they left fully loaded for Florida
And later that night when the final bell rang
Could it be the Stanley Cup they'd been feelin'?
The wind in the wires made a tattle-tale sound from the hot air blowin from the panel
And a tear broke over Friedman’s face
And every man knew, as captain underpants too
T'was the witch of playoffs come stealin'
The dawn came late and the Cup had to wait

He got a raw deal in Florida and in Vegas but, like Sutter in Calgary, his time may be up as the NHL tries to modernize how the game is played. Jacques Lemaire's trap is a thing of the past, eMpTy's dump and chase, Clawed's love of 4th line players. It's all crap.

I feel Jean Luc will thrive under Coach Marty and his free wheeling style. I will take 5-4 wins every day of the week. Bring it. Like Saint Paddy said, I trust HuGo to do their due diligence.

  48. Looks like Riley Kidney's time in junior might be coming to a close as Gatineau is now down 3-0 to the Remparts. Or does he have another year of eligibility...not sure? Meanwhile Hfx got their first win vs Joshua Roy and Sherbrooke, now trailing 2-1. Roy hasn't been very impressive from the game wraps that I've watched.

Two prospects left in the OHL also. And like it or not the top prospect remaining is Logan Mailloux. This guy has the offence and with a bit of seasoning on the back end, will easily be a top 4 dman, possibly a top 2. I have a gut feeling he may be dealt with that FLA pick for something, whether that's PLD or something out of left filed like HuGo pulled last year. But he's paid his dues and if he is a future Hab, I will welcome him.

I was 14 years old and I do have some vague black and white hazy memories of that win against the Blues. I looked at the picture first and the only 3 I couldn't get were Gilles Tremblay, Christian Bordeleau and Larry Hillman (an ex-leaf I think). I recognized a young Mickey Redmond and Bobby Rousseau though. In Jean Beliveau's bio, he thought that team should have won 5 in a row, like the 1956-60 team, only to be interrupted by a bunch of old men and Dave Keon in 1967.

    2. Hey fellow Maritimer. If memory serves me correctly, you retired in your mid-50s from a public service career? I'm in the same boat, and I can retire in 2 years at 56. I'll only have 29 years of service so working a few more years obviously means earning more and increasing the pension. But every retiree I have spoken with says GO AS SOON AS YOU CAN! And Mrs Pad is already retired. I'm always looking for insight from likeminded people on their thoughts about retiring before 60.

      Delete
    3. the Maritimer12:18 PM

Hey Saint Paddy I'll see if I can help. I did retire early at 54 but circumstances regarding the pension set up are different now than back then. Two factors contributed to my decision, 1) I had the 'magic number', age and years of service added up to 85 hence I could go with no penalty. 2) I knew change to a 'shared risk' plan was coming soon so I got out before that happened. Plus, after 30 plus years I felt I needed a change of scenery. I knew I was still employable with my skill set (civil engineering) so I knew it was just a matter of time to find something. After a two year break I took some short term gigs that didn't interfere with golf season but when I hit 60 I knew I had had enough. If you don't mind going to work I would do at least to 55.

As far as 'go as soon as you can', if it works for you financially by all means pull the trigger. We don't know how much time we have left so enjoy it while you can. That's my motto. For sure take your Canada Pension at 60 though. Most financial experts will tell you that. You will take a reduced rate but if you collect it for 7 or 8 years you will get back what you lose. I always said it's free money, take it!

      Hope that helps.

      Delete
    4. Thanks man that's all good stuff. Yeah we have a magic rule of 80 here so I'll have that in 2 years at 56 (and I've purchased 5 years of service from a former gig).

It's one of those things. I know we'll be fine financially. Not rich, but enough to get by.

And yeah I did the math on the CPP a while back. I think it was age 74 where the payout evens out. So taking a reduced pension at 60 vs 65, I will earn the same total amount at age 74, so beyond that age I'm making less than if I waited til 65. But I also think (hope) I'll need less then too. It's weird thinking about that next.phase of life. Not sure how I got here so fast!

I saw an interesting trade proposal from a Chicago perspective. The Black Hawks trade #3 and a second round pick (#56) to Montreal for #5 and #17. Presuming those picks remain as is after the lottery and the leaf beat Florida. Does HuGo take Michkov at #3? Thought provoking indeed. I think Will Smith is going before Montreal picks. If that's the case I would take the Russian kid. He's only 18, they can wait on him for a couple years. He is supposedly an elite talent which the Habs don't have.

Also, on Marinaro's podcast Tuesday night he and his guest were debating the PLD file and also whether HuGo should try to acquire Lafreniere from NY, a similar scenario to Kirby Dach, another under-achieving 21 year old.

Everything hinges on what happens next Monday night. Connor Bedard changes everybody's plans. Good times!

    https://t.co/CPClbbjO1f

Her thoughts on goaltending ring true. We all loved Carey Price, but how many games did he lose 1-0, 2-1, because he had no high end support up front. Bob Gainey knew he had a thoroughbred but read the tea leaves wrong after the '04 lockout and really never got a chance for a re-do because of a family tragedy. Gauthier was only concerned with diets and who ate what. Bargainbin wanted a grinding defence first team with no high end skill. All those wasted years, Price should have won 3 Cups in his career, 2010, 2014 and 2021 getting to the conference Finals and the guys up front running out of gas. Sad, really.

  61. Good to see three young Habs make the USA roster. I don't know if it's by design or due to lack of interest by NHL players, but the vast majority of that team seems to be unknowns/prospects. I think that's actually a great way to go to give the future players for your country extra ice time on an international stage.

But hey, Canada will have Teapot and Pretzel from the Flames...

Meanwhile, in the biggest news story (most probably missed) yesterday, Putin's vaunted Mach 10 hypersonic missile - the one that was supposed to tilt the nuclear arms race and first strike capability to Russia's advantage - got shot down cleanly by the Ukrainians' first use of the US Patriot system. I am going to be completly stupid here. I want Fantalli. He is not Mc David and in the playoff its Drisital who is the better player, becaue he can beat the Ferrrira with his UNIMOG frame. Bedard is a pre NHL unicorn much like Lane Hudson and Mitch Marner. however when there is not room to tank and the tanks are comming, how many small men can take combat?

So the leaf are down 3 to zip against the worst team to make the playoffs. I am not Mitch Melnick but was that not the same against the Habs. Maybe the leaf need to play better teams to win?

I work 8 hours a day but I consume 4 to 6 hours of sports radio during the same time, should my boss ask for a refund?

Toronto radio dominates my media sphere, I live here. Let me give you an analogy or some other elite term to describe what I here.
I listen to the enemy every day and it does not make me more sphembic, it makes me hate them more. Like every rational Hab fan I wanted Toronto to defeat Florida. We get a better, much better draft pick it makes us stronger. However like most if not all HABS fans given teh 3 game collapse of the leaf, I want to see the coup de gros.
This is a very primal feeling, the same one that many politicians tap into. I am sure you have read The trouble with Kansas by Tomas Frank. This was written in 2004 and so precinct.(just so you dont call me a smarty pants I want you to know I never read the book, or many others I use in arguments, the word does not matter its the symbol) You know what else happened in 2004, the leaf won a playoff round.

The leaf not only have the trouble in Kansas they got a trouble in Arizona. They got trouble in Etobicoke, they got a trouble in Calgary and maybe some towns I cant spell or pronounce in Russia.
If you are still following the Leaf Media are carving up the leaf like a beached whale that was supposed to penetrate the whaling ship whose sailors were molesting the local women and Shagahing the men. I was Shanghaied myself numerous times but they sent me biz class.

So right now you are saying, Steve WTF are you trying to say?

I put my self interest aside to see the leafs suffer, does that not make me some kind of bad person? Yes it does, and sport is the actualization of the non combat combat mode of civilization. We need to solve the problem of sports fans hurting themselves because they take so much pleasure in the destruction of rivals.
With your help and a couple of UN initiatives, for sure we could get money from F1, Olympics and numerous world cups. we could get humans to act rationally about sport, and that would extend to things that really matter. I look forward to your proposal to implement that. I ask for nothing, okay maybe a stipend in the low 7 fingers.

Well Steve, I'm not sure what you are talking about, other than the leaf stuff, But I get the gist of it.
It would be great if the Habs get the Bedard unicorn but I would be happy with Fantilli.
The leaf and the SFU can all eff off. As for that Florida pick, this Hab fan would never sell his soul for a lousy draft pick, lose leaf lose!!
People forget that Florida were President's trophy winners last season, so beating the heartless leaf is no surprise to me. The leaf are a poorly constructed team, narcos is a bitch, the defence is as porous as a sponge and the goaltending is laughable.

If the Russia issue wasn't a thing, he is a slam dunk at #2 and going #1 wouldn't be inconceivable. Connor and MiCH are this generation's Sid and Ovie. Take him at 5 if he's there. He is worth the risk and the wait.

100% agree. I think there is a chance Michkov goes before 5. From what little I've read or seen, he is right there with Bedard. The Habs need a player of that caliber. If he is at 5 they better grab him otherwise they are doing a disservice to the franchise. Other young Russian players have signed recently, I don't think it's a problem.

But for my sanity, I'm staying away from all social media related to the Habs during the off season. You go on there and basically see people yelling, if not threatening, Hughes to SIGN CAUFIELD NOW or if you don't select player A or B, IT'S TERMS FOR DISMISSAL (and much of it worded far harsher than this).

It's not worth it. Like I've said many times, in the end whether my teams are in a 30+ year drought or if they've won 6 championships since 2002, it actually has zero impact on my overall well being and life in general. I don't know, maybe a cup would haul some real diehards out of a deep depression or something, but I get the sense it would be short lived for those folks and they'd be back on the hate train by training camp.
