  1. Seriously sexy thread, just in time for tonight's game against the cheatin' golden pissers. Fuck you gary.

In response to Saint Paddy's earlier comment on the previous thread, I haven't seen any of that speculation regarding moving up in the draft. I'm not sure who will get the 1st pick, but Jax (don't need a QB) and Carolina (might take one) should finish lower than the Giants. We will have to see what the DeVito effect is for the rest of the games. Supposedly the top ranked QB is Cam Ward in Florida? I haven't been following that closely.

    Go Habs!

Now GYFHG and give us a good game against the team you kicked to the curb in the playoffs, the Silly Vegas Kuhnnnnnnniggets! I fart in their general direction.

  6. Decent start, no rust evident after four days. Monty looking sharp, he said, hoping he doesn't jinx him.

    2. Slaf over-confident maybe? This team is getting a dressing down right now (I hope). Nine SOG in two periods against a team tgat played the night before with travel. Ugh.

Since the hit on 7vens that clearly shook him up, even though it earned them a PP, it got no response.

This is not how you treat your fans on a Saturday night at home. Especially so well-rested.

  19. Reality check time once again. This team is exactly where they should be and will most likely finish which is bottom 5. We can debate and discuss who should be playing with whom or where. The personnel is what it is. Let's say the Habs acquire another high end player like Hagens or Misa and bring over Demidov next season, the likelihood they make the team any better is remote. Let's say Fowler is the real deal, he is at least 3 more years away from taking the net in Montreal. The defence might be OK (they got exposed last night) but that is debatable as well. By the time Montreal is a true contender (if they ever are) Suzuki will be an elder statesman around 30 with Dach and Caufield around 28 each. The younger guys will more likely be the stars if they pan out in another 5 years. Bottom line, they ain't there yet and aren't close either. Lots more pain and losing to be had. That's the way I see it anyway. Might be time to dig out the 2009 100th anniversary DVD set and re-watch some winning Habs teams.

Quite the shocker in St. Louis this morning, Jim Montgomery didn't stay unemployed very long.

    1. For watching or playing?😁

I still have my clubs in my car 'just in case'. There are a couple of courses that stay open pretty much so long as it isn't snowing...and maybe even then, maybe still go.

I see the LPGA had their version of the Fed ex cup this weekend. Henderson finished a respectable T8th.

They never seem to stop playing, Mack Hughes finished T5th this weekend.

      Delete
  24. Yep this rebuild is going to take some time unless there are magical trades/UFA signings to get superstar players on the team. Even that guarantees nothing. See Oilers, Edmonton and Maple Leafs, Toronto. It took Ovechkin/Backstrom a dozen years or more.

I get a feeling at 55, I'm on the younger end of some of our regular posters (can't get a good read on that oleg guy). Point is we don't have forever...I'd like to see a cup before I'm eligible to start receiving my CPP.

    So 4 years. LFG!!!

    ReplyDelete
  25. I think Hughes and Gorton were always aiming for 2025 to make their big move(s) UFA-wise. A few bargainbin bergy contracts coming off the books, e.g., Armia, Dvorak, Savard (don't mind if he remains) and the dead cap money - Petry and Allen. That just leaves the Gallagher and Anderson deals and they can be the old vets in the locker room. All that dough plus the supposed $6mil increase can be weaponized to go after a big name player if the Habs show any improvement by the end of this season to convince anyone to actually come to Montreal. It would probably have to be a big number, a lot more than the Suzuki limit. Probably looking at $12mil for any big name. We'll see.

Next year would be year 4 of a 5 year plan
The D should be functioning by then with rino and maillot the goalie situation should be figured out
Half a dove beck Roy should be up
Wool and dach should be working and add a big guy or two and away we go
      Hopefully
      Go Habs

      Delete
  26. I don't see any real game changers available through the UFA process this year.
Some of these players won't make it to UFA, but for the fun of it, say they do.
    Which of these players fit?

Shisterkin - do you want the highest paid goalie again?
    Marner - probably wants $13M?
Rantanen - probably looking for $11-12M
Ekblad - a big RD - would be highly sought after.
The cap room is available, and as the M says, Suzuki's cap needs to be busted in order to get a star player. These are the only players I see potentially paying more for.

Nobody else on the list moves the needle enough, far as I can tell.
So I hope Hughes gets a new pair of trading pants for Christmas because I think that is where he finds his missing piece(s).

Player Age Position Current Contract (Cap Hit)
    1. Igor Shesterkin 28 G $5,666,667
    2. Mitch Marner 27 RW $10.903 million
    3. Mikko Rantanen 28 RW $9.25 million
    4. Aaron Ekblad 28 D $7.5 million
    5. Nikolaj Ehlers 28 LW $6 million
    6. Brock Boeser 27 RW $6.65 million
    7. Brock Nelson 33 C/LW $6 million
    8. Jakob Chychrun 26 D $4.6 million
    9. Claude Giroux 36 RW $6.5 million
    10. John Tavares 34 C/LW $11 million
    11. Matt Duchene 33 C/LW $3 million
    12. Marcus Pettersson 28 D $4,025,175
    13. Brad Marchand 36 LW $6.125 million
    14. Dmitry Orlov 33 D $7.75 million
    15. Gustav Nyquist 35 LW/RW $3.185 million
    16. Frank Vatrano 30 LW/RW $3.65 million
    17. Adin Hill 28 G $4.95 million
    18. Vladislav Gavrikov 29 D $5.875 million
    19. Kyle Palmieri 33 RW $5 million
    20. Jamie Benn 35 C/LW $9.5 million

    1. The only ones on that list worth taking a run at are Marner, Rantanen, Ehlers maybe Boeser. I don't think the putrid leaf will let Marner walk and he wants to stay there. Can't see Colorado letting Rantanen go either. Hughes might have a shot at getting Ehlers, especially if he re-signs Laine. Otherwise, as Saint Paddy said, the trade route might be the only way to get a hi-end player.

If we are staying the course we have to get our core bunch working
That is the hook dach and slaf have to start doing something
I know I’ve heard about injuries and being a kid and not getting a bounce but these units have been playing this game since they were 6 years old
So they need to get on their fucking horse and start producing
Our team is being carried by our two can’t miss guys in suzi and CC and our old vet in the gallyator is showing how it’s done
So unless that starts to happen adding some 6M guy isn’t going to fix fuck all

    4. I think I'm cursed when it comes to getting any Government largesse. I paid for my child care for years. No help. Give seniors some help, nope you're a too young senior. Dental care, I signed up but haven't tried that as yet, still have to pay 40%. Pharmacare, I don't need contraceptives and don't have diabetes - yet anyway. But I pay for all my prescriptions out of pocket. And as a retiree I don't qualify for any 'working Canadian benefits, not even Blaine Higgs handout of $300 last spring. Seems I'm always shit out of luck. All I do is pay and pay some more.

  42. I've come to the conclusion that there is no hope for this bunch. There is not one player they could trade for that would help. Not Sid, not Nate, not even a resurrected Rocket, Gros Bill or Flower. The lack of talent and effort (except for Gallagher) is appalling.

Don't be sold the bill of goods that all these draft picks and so-called prospects will eventually lead the once fabled Montreal Canadiens to Stanley Cup glory. That's just media driven propaganda to keep us coming back for more. If I were Bell media, I would halt production on season 2 of 'The Rebuild', they may as well just re-run season 1 because it will be more of the same.

2 afternoon weekend games coming up against the beaners and rags. I believe those are 6pm and 8pm starts for our friend UK3X.

If there is any chance to be 'in the mix', they need to start that with a 4-5 game winning streak to get out of the basement. I'm not sure 2 afternoon away back to back games is the place that's going to start.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Don't let one OT win against a fellow bottom feeder get your hopes up. There is no 'in the mix' to be had. 2025 at the earliest and only if they figure out how to win consistently which they haven't.

  56. Regarding the Leko trade, I mentioned it above in the fist comment about it, the pick we received was part of the package to move up to get Hage. So it will actually be a couple of years before we know if we get any positive results back from that trade.

I also mentioned we would still have Habs Leko and not Avs Leko. Some players thrive better in other situations. I'm sure there are a number of current Habs that would be shining much brighter on different clubs.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I remember the Leko who scored the GWG against the Golden Showers to advance to the Finals in 2021. I think Leko got shoehorned into a checking role by the likes of eMTY and clod, he could have possibly been a consistent 15-20 goal scorer with the right center. Anyway, Von Klumsy is a bust but if Hage turns out to be a decent 2C then I will say fair deal. But, as you say that's probably 5 years out.

  62. Checked out Tankathon this morning, the NY Giants currently hold the #1 pick and after 3 spins the Canadiens got #1. The Giants can take a QB of their choice, Shedeur Sanders, son of Deion 'Prime Time' Sanders who happens to be his coach at Colorado State or Florida QB Cameron Ward. Both are big, mobile gun-slingers, I'll be happy with either one. The Habs could take power forward Porter Martone, elite center James Hagens or 'exceptional' OHLer Michael Misa. Even if the Habs stay where they are at at #4, they should get one of those guys if a team ahead of them picks LD Schaefer.

  82. On the TSN690 post game show, a great point was made about how effective Kreider is at taking away the goalie's eyes in front of the net on the PP, and how the goalie has to react. It was noted how TFS was good at bobbing his head side to side and picking his moments to push the guy out of the way. Sometimes I wish TFS was with the team, acting as a coaching consutant. Imagine how much his tutelege could help Monty and CP30.

  85. Did you guys see that Demi-god got benched for the entire 60 minutes yesterday, wtf, can Bobrov not sneak into Russia and rescue that poor kid from obvious mistreatment.

  86. I watched the MSG broadcast last night and as giant Homer's as they are, even they commented on the weak call on Anderson and a missed tripping call on Armia, which was shortly before the Dach penalty IIRC. That speaks volume as much as MSLs "we're off to Cincinnati" like comments.

    1. The missed call on Armia was on the winning goal, and took him out in order to create the opportunity for it in tge first place.

    2. Gotta admit I did not see this season coming for your Steelers. Or the Bengals. I'd have switched them to be honest. Congrats and good luck.

Meanwhile my Pat's give up a game winning drive, complete with 2 point conversion to lose by one to the Colts...and remain at 3 wins, good for the draft, bad for morale. Guys call by the Colts but I've wondered why more coaches don't gamble on the 2 pt conversion for the win.

  88. I have to go out so I'm recording the game. Catch up with you guys later.
    Go Habs!
F U gary and your stinkin' incompetent officials.

  89. This Bruins ceremony is underwhelming. I'm thinking how little applause their biggest legends are getting,. Orr gets a good round then it dies out right away. MTL fans would go for a couple of minutes or more for a player of that stature.

  99. Hopefully Wool is back soon. Not that I think he'll make a difference, just a reason to watch to see how he looks. Cuz there isn't much reason to watch otherwise.

  100. OK, finally finished watching that dumpster fire, including the 'celebration', as someone said pretty underwhelming stuff. The Neanderthal beaner fans have always liked fighting and goonery over skill and all that was emphasized in the videos.

As to the game, it went about as I expected, thank goodness I could fast forward through a great deal of it. Defence was mostly awful nothing new there. The silver lining is Hutson, he is phenomenal and the biggest reason I will keep watching.

Goaltending, I've come to the conclusion that Hughes needs to trade for a true starting goalie if these young guys want to start 'learning to win' which was supposed to be the aim of this current season. Monty isn't a starter, he would be a decent backup. Primeau is a minor league goalie at best, I don't know why Hughes was so worried about losing him last season, we should have been so lucky. They need someone to fill in until either Fowler or the Russian is ready, if they ever are.

Suzuki and Caufield are coming to life but they need help, we can only hope Wool can get up to speed quickly. I would put Heineman in the top 6, he has a sniper's shot, use it.

Looks like another top 5 pick is all we have to look forward to the rest of the season.

    1. They can trade Matheson any time as well. Seen enough of that dude.

  101. Oh yeah, football, agree with Saint Paddy, I thought the Steelers would be a mediocre team you just never know with those guys. I was hoping the Pats would win but my Giants are safely ensconced in last place anyway for the #1 pick. It's sad that's all I have to look forward to with my teams, high draft picks. It's been a miserable 4 years.

    1. Looks like the Raiders will be fighting you for that first overall pick and the top QB in the draft. No worries, it's often the 2nd or 3rd QB that turns out to be 'the guy'.

    2. I'm more interested in O-Line players, specifically a left tackle. Unless there is a superstar WR available...but I suspect that will come via trade or signing instead.

    3. Though Tankathon tells me this WR from Arizona is the guy, Tetairoa McMillan. His highlites are impressive.

    So RHP cleared waivers
Dunno but me thinks that speaks volumes
No to be Debbie downer but I’m sure CP 30 would do the same
These are guys we give millions to
Can’t wait for some help from the skill supposedly up and coming
You know like all that skill at the D that everyone talked about
Guess I’m at the cynical stage
    Go Habs

  104. MSL is making some bad decisions lately with the forward lines. I know he doesn't have much to work with but after 24 games it should be obvious: put Slaf back with Nick and CC, a rising tide lifts all boats they will drag #20 along with them. After that there is no second line to be had but I would at least try Heineman there with Dach and Wool. I would put the Evans/Pony/Lep line back together they were at least hard to play against. Send the crybaby back to Laval at least they were winning when he was there. As for the defence, put MM on the 3rd pair and cut back his minutes, the less time he is on the ice the better. Fast Lane can run the PP1. Give the net to Monty and only play #30 when absolutely necessary and maybe not then.

    ReplyDelete
  105. Just to toot my own horn, I've never been a fan of this goalie tandem. Never thought Monty was the answer and never had confidence in Primeau. From the May 5th blog:
And is our goaltending good enough? Primo/Monty were 41st/50th in GAA and 20th/38th in Save%.
Monty has his moments but is Primo the guy until Fowler is ready?
What about giving up on them and taking a shot at Laurent Brossoit? Sounds like he's from QC but isn't (he's from BC). 31 years old. Great numbers last year with a 2.00 GAA and .927 Save% with WPG.
Or big Anthony Stolarz with FLA. 2.02 and .925

Remains to be seen what Stolarz would be doing in front of this defence, rather than playing for an offensive (I mean this both ways) leafs team, who I hate to admit, have greatly improved on the back end.

Waive Primo. He will never be a starting goalie with this team. Maybe one day, like Charlie Lindgren in Washington, he will find his game and his place. But it ain't here. Bring up that European goalie and let Dobes and Primeau (who I assume would clear) handle Laval. It can't be worse.

    1. Agreed. For better or worse Monty is 'the guy' for the time being with his 3 year deal. We forget where these two goalies came from, Monty a 3rd round pick by Florida claimed on waivers by bargainbin and Primeau a 7th round pick. Neither were high end players. Waive Primeau, if someone claims him fine, no biggie, bring up Connor Hughes a 28 year old refugee who played in Switzerland last season as a back up, no developing to ruin with him.

I think Hughes needs to pull off a big trade to shake things up. I've said it before all this losing is not good for the morale of the youngsters they want to be the future leaders. HuGo and Marty should have a good idea of who will probably pan out and who can be cut loose. They need to be a .500 time or close to it at season's end.
