Guy! Guy! Guy!

On this day, May 22nd,  50 years ago, part 1 of the most astute trade in NHL, nay all of sports, history was made. You probably know it, but it's a story that always makes me smile while simultaneously making me feel even more disappointment than usual about our more recent fortunes.  Of course I'm talking about the great Sam Pollock's genius move in trading Ernie Hicke and a 1st to the California Golden Seals for the Seals' 1st round pick in 1971. Sam knew Guy was going to be drafted 1st overall that year while the Seals as a new franchise were likely thrilled to get an extra 1st asap.  Of course Part Deux happened during the following season as Mr Pollock watched the Kings suck more than the Seals, so he shipped Ralph Backstrom to them to ensure they finish ahead of the Seals, guaranteeing The Flower's arrival in Montreal.  One can always wonder what if they had to settle for the 2nd pick instead and ended up with Marcel Dionne.  And also, the Habs' 4th pick in 1971, 20th overall was Larry Robinson so we can also thank the Seals for taking defenceman Ken Baird a few spots ahead of this rather than Big Bird.

What a history, and what a time it must have been to be a Habs fan! I was alive, but not cognizant being only a year old at the time.  Sadly, unlike a hockey player whose name shall not sully this page, I don't remember watching hockey in my pyjamas with my Dad when I was 2 years old.

I could watch this clip 3000 times and not tire of it. Suck it ol' crotch!

  1. Well done St. Pad.

    Hope everyone is doing OK.

    Can't complain about the weather.

Hitting the trails for some semi-off road biking.

  2. The UK goes into a long weekend and I have no doubt we'll (as a nation) lose our minds and pack the beaches out as the weather is supposed to be hot and sunny...I am staying in my backyard bar with the family and I'm gonna have me a couple of pints! You guys all stay safe too. Great feature on the Flower St. Pad. I forgot he used to have those ridiculous sideburns! No team anywhere has the history of the Habs. Those pics are all classics! 3. I was downtown for work today and practically nobody is wearing a mask and the social distancing is definitely not top of mind as folks are out enjoying some long awaited warm weather. While this is bad, I was on Spring Garden Rd, the busiest pedestrian street east of QC and it wasn't THAT bad. Best of all it lived up to its nickname of Skin Garden Rd. Guys and gals alike getting their tan on.

Fucking awesome thread Saint Paddy! I am only a few years younger than the Flower so I was able to watch his whole career right up until that player/coach who shall remain nameless ended his career with the Habs. Did you know Guy was a three pack a day smoker in his prime ... and Bowman used to double shift him all the time! Incroyable!

I had long sideburns but they weren't as formidable as Guy's.

Shot an 85 today, man it was freakin' hot too had to be 28 degrees today.

    Marilyn Monroe was a goddess!!

  6. Saint Pad, thank you for bringing it back to hockey and reminding us of the amazing craft of team building. Pollock was without peer, albeit in a far different era. For Lafreniere wishers, don't fret; there is always a way to trade up if the deal is sweet enough, and MB has shown he ain't gunshy. Plus, he has some assets other GMs want desperately.

I am just happy we'll see a little hockey again soon, and a best of five against the Pens - games that have real meaning - is just the ticket for this ravaged festival-less Montreal summer. I'll take it. Gladly.

Letang, Crosby, Malkin, that new goalie... We have rested veterans with Olympic gold medals ourselves, and a whole lot of speedy youth and guts to spare. I say, it'll be a fantastic series.

  7. Also, Guy was the focus of undiluted hatred for my snotty-nosed francophobic Sherbrooke neighbour Jimmy Begin (his Boston-Catholic family heritage had them pronouncing it as BEAGUE-in, as if to emphasize the deep-rooted self-hatred inherent in melting-pot immigration politics they never understood themselves). The Begin family love of all teams Boston and hatred of all things found in their Québecois surroundings was what cemented my CH love for all time. Like PET and Chrétien, Guy Lafleur and the CH represented how we << 'tit gars canadiens >> could be a little faster, a little more talented, and flashier than the overbearing Amerikan juggernaut always breathing down our necks in the 70s and 80s.

So thanks for reminding me of all that.

    1. Imagine TFS getting that much credit from a Canadian sports outlet outside of Montreal!
The writer mind you is giving the Habs (correctly imho) not the slimmest of chances against the Pens. And though I know it, seeing this in writing really brings one to reality: "The Canadiens played 71 games in the regular season and won a grand total of 19 in regulation..."

      Delete
    2. That is a great piece, really illustrating some of TFS's best attributes. It also proves how under-appreciated he is by most Habs fans.

I hope the whole Pens organization is as dismissive as this article about our FHForwards. --SiM

  12. IF it happens, I think the whole 24 team (or any number for that matter) summertime playoffs is a farce. Will I watch the Habs play their 3 games? Yes. But that's it. And if they somehow win games and play deep into the playoffs or hell, even win the whole thing, will I keep watching? Yes. But will I still think it's really stupid? Yes. But will I gloat to no end to all of my leaf and bruin fan friends and relatives even as they argue that it's not a real cup win because the Habs didn't deserve to be there? Hell, yes.

I don't know if I can watch hockey in July and August, it's just not in my DNA. After Labour Day, sure, not a problem it would be reminiscent of the '72 Summit Series. Why not wait until then, see if borders open up and if there are any COVID spikes? It would be like a two month training camp but with real games that mattered. Start the next season in late Nov., early Dec. and play a 70 game season. Don't have an amateur draft, just let this crop be unrestricted free agents available to the highest bidder, Montreal has tons of cap space for Laffy, make it so buttman.

One good thing about the buttman finally pulling the plug on the regular season (it was never going to be played regardless) is the fawning tranna media can't suck Narcos' dick any more and he wins fuck all. Sure, they will continue to plan their Cup parade until the putrid losing leaf fall on their faces again but let them continue to whack off to their little fantasy. As for the Habs, they get to play a couple more games at least and bbb gets to save face by claiming his team didn't fail to make the playoffs 4 out of the last 5 years. But did they? Is it a playOFF or a playIN? I don't know. As for the Draft who can figure that out? The Habs will get ... somebody. Maybe hockey will be back in September, maybe not. A lot of stuff has to happen and until there is a vaccine, the players will be playing in front of cardboard cutouts if they play at all.

As you may have heard, one clueless individual, a health care worker no less from the Campbellton area in northern N.B. took a trip into Quebec, got infected with COVID-19 and didn't quarantine for the mandated 14 days. Though I actually learned some valuable info from the TSN parody, which sincerely reposted Auston Matthews' statement on racism. Narco is actually half Latino. It makes so much sense now.

And finally, congrats to Mr and Mrs TFS on the announcement of #3 on the way.

She has been looking after patients (including a previously healthy young male colleague who just got transferred to ICU), and she saw patients succumb. She would be the first to call BS if it was BS. Not a productive line of inquiry, my friend. --SiM

There's not much to discuss really. Seven years of mediocre results at best and no playoff success to speak of except for a short playoff run in 2014 which obviously blinded bergevin to what he (thought) he had. Geoff Molson? He's a fan who happens to own the team, is loyal to a fault to his hockey heroes and has no acumen to run a team. Refusing to hire a President of Hockey Ops shows his ego is bigger than we thought. The Habs will continue to go nowhere and we will be told 'the future is bright'. I'm not buying what they are selling and I'm also not buying any hockey cards of these so-called future stars. They eventually get traded some where else anyway.

I think DGMB convinces Geoff of many things. I'm not sure if it's a Jedi mind trick or something like it.

    4. GM's immodesty (they put me on the Board of Governors so I must be a respected hockey mind) does not breed confidence. Maybe you're on that board out of respect for your club's historic relevance - and to make sure nothing upsets the apple cart of southern markets getting a leg up from profitable teams with nestablished fan-base - like his. If Geoff can't see that, what else is escaping the attention of his superior mind and executive skills? --SiM

  55. After this post I am going to avoid commenting on the Habs until at least after they get actual ice in Brossard..Everyone needs to remember that the last time the Habs played Karl Alzner was back in the lineup. Half the team had already had Covid and the so called second coming of Guy Lafleur had a sore wrist... Or hand... Or arms... I can't remember. KidA was beat up but playing, Max was in cloud kukooland from reading his own reviews and KK was serving a misconduct in Laval. I can't even remember who was backing up TFS... Might have been Cayden but equally could have been the other guy... No one should expect BBB to to make any changes now given he has made the show. Geoff Molson doesn't even know which players will make it to Montreal so any thought of getting a real hockey mind to run the show won't even have made his radar. That is all...

Over at the toronto sports network there is the question - "which Canadian team will the next to win the Stanley Cup?" I didn't click on the article because I'd bet my last dollar the answer is the fucking leaf.

I started reading Stu Cowan's report on the Geoff Molson press conference from yesterday. I didn't get very far when I realized I was reading the same spin doctoring that's been spun for the last 11 years under Molson's watch. Basically, it comes down to this: 1)We know what we're doing 2)We have a plan 3)We have good young players, good prospects and lots of draft picks. Same old story. OK, I agree the league is a whole different animal now with parity the rule. I don't buy the excuse of injuries for two 8 game losing streaks. Boston lost Bergeron and Marchand for stretches and kept right on rolling and were the No. 1 team in the league at the pause. They have more or better talented players and I would submit better coaching. Definitely a better GM. So don't tell me you have a 'good' team when you could only manage to win 19 games all fucking season. So, thanks for the update Geoff. Your loyalty to Bergevin and Julien is admirable but a losing proposition. Maybe try to get some hockey people from outside the limited pool you swim in.

I'm taking bets that Seattle will have a better team and better record than Montreal in their inaugural season led by Ron Francis and maybe Gerard Gallant?
