  1. Hope everyone is doing OK.

No giving out candy here yesterday.

Work continues after a UO strike ratification (not my union).

Including being a broon, who knew Orr was such a fucking tool?

    Love The Strokes.

I never liked Bobby Orr because he played for the despicable Boston Broons but I always respected him. Until now. I still consider him the greatest hockey player who ever played that doesn't change. But for him to come out in support of such a detestable human being as trump is unfathomable. His reputation is forever tarnished.

I don't consider myself a political person. I don't subscribe to any particular party although I tend to lean to the right. I've voted for different parties over the years and try to vote for the person regardless. That being said, I do not even recognize the Republican party anymore. They have become some sort of right wing extremist group and have become dangerous. I hope and pray that shit never happens up here.

How disappointing to see the likes of Orr and Nicklaus supporting a racist, misogynistic, divisive con man...most likely primarily because they have money and Trump won't hit them in the wallet. Fuck 'em.

RIP to Sean Connery, a great actor. I liked him in the Untouchables and the Highlander. My favourite 007 was Roger Moore, mostly because he was more suave than Connery and I liked The Saint on TV when I was a kid.

    I have 3 golf experiences;

In the late 1990s some friends bought me lessons, it was filmed, I sucked, it was funny footage.

I played in a 4some at Montebello, corporate event, we won. I got a nice leather jacket.

  31. I saw the highlights last night - Augusta with no fans and no bleachers looks strange. The course was very soft from the rain. These days, I prefer the highlight shows as it moves the game along and you get to see a lot more of the players...except when they focus on whomever is the current favourite. Last night it was Deschambeau, but switched as English golfer Paul Casey stormed out in front. I love playing but haven't in years. I've always figured I'll re-visit it when I get closer to retirement age. Right now, I be,live the courses are all closed as the UK is in the middle of a month long covid lockdown, so a little escapism is always interesting. Whatever happened to Mike Weir? Surely he's on the senior tour now...?

    1. As a Master's winner Mike is invited to play the Masters each year. Shot a -1 yesterday, better than the three younger Canadians. Would love to see him make it to the weekend. Not that we'll ever see him because as you say he isn't one of the current favourites of the golf world. I generally find if the Canadians aren't top 3.in scoring you won't likely see many, if any of their shots.

  38. So does anyone else here feel that the Habs should never play in a sweater that is predominately leaf Blue? I see Buttman is making new shit up again and they have come up with a "retro" jersey for selected games (Take a big fucking guess which team will play the Habs when they deem it time to don the Retro jersey!) I've seen the pics - I fucking absolutely hate it. End of. Never a Habs sweater - Non non non!

    ReplyDelete

    1. Just saw those and don't know what to think. They did wear all those classic sweaters in their centennial season, including the blue one with the 'C' on it. From the one picture I saw, it at least seems like a vastly different blue compared to the shitty leaf blue. But that's one pic on my computer. Anyway, I vowed not to spend money on any Habs merchandise until they were respectable. I even returned a jersey that Mrs Pad bought me for Christmas a few years back.
We're getting there but let's just say at this point there is no fear of me buying one of these sweaters.

Well we're in for another total shut down as of midnight in NS Halifax region. I guess I'll never understand people's desire/need to go out to bars/restaurants/etc during a pandemic. I was in a location on Friday at lunch which was deemed a 'potential exposure site' and I've shut myself down for 2 weeks. Not meeting colleagues, not going shopping, staying home. Here's hoping the juniors can pull off a tournament. Some hockey would be nice.

The Atlantic bubble has burst, The Maritimes QMJHL teams may have to go to a bubble in the New Year to resume play. I bet on Moncton being the place.

    ReplyDelete
  47. If the NHL plays and they keep all the Canadian teams in Canada - the only realistic way I can see it happening, I wouldn't consider it a proper season - more of a "novelty due to Covid" situation. I don't really think it's sustainable for the owners to run it without any fans. But and as interesting as it might be to play the Jets, the Oilers, 'nucks and Flames 10 times in a row, I don't see it as a proper test of who are the best teams in the NHL. The league is about the best of the best. The strongest, the hardest to play against, overcoming the travel and the crowds in the arenas setting the atmosphere and mood for each game. The Habs have rivalries in Boston, Philly and Chicago, not to mention Florida. The Americans could give a shit about covid, which is essentially the biggest problem the world of sports is facing. The NHL needs them to care or the virus ain't going anywhere anytime soon. Good luck immunizing 300M people this side of 2024 too...

    1. The SFU and Rogers are giddy at the thought of their team mowing through a weak Canadian division (see, their team is by far the strongest of all Canadian teams in case you haven't been reading up on the situation) straight to the Stanley Cup final. They will do whatever necessary to make this a reality (the season that is). But in 'actual' reality, I'd place them 3rd at best in an all-Canadian division.

    2. the Maritimer12:20 PM

I read about the SFU 'prediction' in Eyes on the Prize. One commenter nailed it when they said the so-called 'journalists' on that site are basically Rogers, hence leaf shills. They will shovel leaf shit into the gta to get clicks and readers. I deleted sportsnet off my desktop months ago. I don't even read Engels anymore as he is a Rogers shill as well though I can understand why since he'd probably like to keep his job. Fair enough but I won't read it. I only go to known Habs sites nowadays.

I wouldn't put money on it but I wouldn't be surprised to see them upset this week. Speaking of upsets, the m's Giants taking the Seahawks to the limit up by5 with 2 left as I write this. 1. I'm torn with the hockey thing. The selfish part of me wants a season and Juniors. The logical part says nobody should be working at a non essential job, especially when there is close and very physical contact involved. And how that potentially impacts the families of those players. But it's their decision and if they drop the puck, I'll be there!

It won't be easy for some but we all gotta restrict holiday gatherings, keep wearing masks, only go out for essentials, stay the blazes home, and hopefully by next summer we're back to some form of normal.

Just helped my daughter and her boyfriend buy a house in Ottawa. Hope they can manage from here out and I hope travel restrictions are opened up in the summer so I can take a drive up for a visit and whilst there buy our friend moe a drink (or 3).

Now, if moe's Steelers do what they are supposed to, the Giants should win the NFC East. Props to journeyman QB Colt McCoy (great name btw) in picking up an important win.

As for hockey, if the Juniors can pull off the bubble like the NHL did back in the summer, more power to them. As for the NHL, if the NFL, NBA and MLB can pull it off so can they. Keep the fans away and we'll watch on TV.

Conversely, wouldn't PIT have had a long rest for the previous game waiting for the Ravens to get better? Does that factor in? I don't know.

Looks like the Jets will be getting the #1 pick, wow are they ever terrible.

  65. I started watching Cobra Kai and was pleasantly surprised. Spoiler ahead...Now I'm no martial arts expert like my esteemed Maritimer counterpart, but I do question how a bunch of rejects with 2-3 months (I'm guessing on the timeframe) of 'training' could win a major event like that. But hey it's good fun and I'm really enjoying Johnny's character. But man, if those guys would just sit down and talk...

It's a cute show, I'm actually cheering for Johnny's character as he tries to put his life on the right path and separate himself from the old Cobra Kai dojo. Lots of teenage angst and drama as well.

I've learned to let go of the Hollywood version of karate and their time compression for actual training. Yes, the tournament victory was farcical as not only Miguel but Robby both show up wearing black belts after only weeks of 'training'. In real life that will get you a yellow belt. In any respectable dojo, it's 2-3 years to get to sho dan (1st black belt).

I wasn't going to mention anything about it but it's been on my mind for days and it hits close to home. RIP to the 6 souls who went down in their scallop boat last Tuesday morning. My father and both grandfathers fished the Bay of Fundy their whole lives. My youngest brother goes occasionally still on scallop draggers and when I heard about the incident I immediately thought of him. Fortunately, he had come in from a trip a day or two before. He would have known most of those men, it's a small community. What a sad week it's been.

Horizon Health and Vitalite (francophone) are always looking to hire. There is a story on CBC/NB about a young family from Toronto who bought a house with ocean view (on-line) for $100k and moved to Saint John from Toronto where they were paying $1500 per month rent for a tiny one room apartment. 94. the Maritimer8:40 PM

    Let's start with the obvious.

    Ottawa - rebuilding
Winnipeg - didn't shore up their D, have good forwards and good goalie
Calgary - decent team, tough, stole Vancouver's goalie
Vancouver - some really good young players, probably a bit inexperienced, lost their #1 goalie
Edmonton - 2 superstar forwards, speed speed and more speed. Weak D and goalie. They are a handful.
Montreal- It will depend on Nature and KK. If they are successful the Habs can compete and if Anderson and Toffoli can score. Solid D and solid goaltending.
leaf - soft as wet cow dung, no backbone, poor D and shaky goaltending. The league tried to help them out with two final games at the Scotia mausoleum. The SFU will tell their followers to plan the parade but they will be lucky to finish in the top 4.
