"Happy birthday to Yvan Cournoyer, born today in 1943! In his NHL career from 1963 to 1979, The Roadrunner had 863 points in 968 games. He won 10 Stanley Cups with the Montreal Canadiens, and captained the team from 1975 to 1979. He also won the Conn Smythe in 1973."
The Roadrunner! He was my favourite as a young boy until the Flower fully blossomed. Could shoot the puck both ways, left or right. Speed to burn. They don't make'm like that any more.
Yvan was definitely one of the best, only Espo maybe a tad bigger. In the final minute of Game 8 in Moscow, Harry Sinden put Esposito on the ice with Cournoyer, Frank Mahovlich, Serge Savard and Guy Lapointe with Dryden in net. Harry knew what he was doing.
Three UFAs available next season, I would welcome any one of them with open arms. Toffoli, Marscheaeult or Stamkos. All a little older but still effective at scoring goals. I would doubt that Stammer would leave Tampa but he was Coach Marty's linemate as a youngster. Intriguing. Toffee can come back anytime. Any one of them would help.
My dad took me to a game at the forum and we got there early to watch the warmup and The Roadrunner slapped a puck from the redline over the net on a rope. I was never so impressed. After that when I played hockey I was number 12. I heard that he practiced with steel pucks to build up his strength. Go Habs
I remember reading that Yvan's dad was a machinist who made the steel pucks. He and Lemaire both practiced with them, that's why they had such hard slap shots for not being big men. I still can see Lemaire scoring from center ice against Tony Esposito in game 7 in Chicago back in 1971.
Greed strikes again as Geoff Molson has allowed another terrible corporation to defile the sainted flannel with their crap logo. Imagine, two of the worst companies in Canada, known for screwing over consumers are allowed to advertise on an iconic hockey jersey. Disgraceful. I would never, ever spend a cent on a Habs jersey today.
Wow, it's getting ugly in Edmonton. They've already fired the coach so what now? Trade for a goalie? Apparently, dredger floated the rumour that HuGo and Holland are working on a big deal that would see Full Monty and maybe Savard go west. Lots of stuff coming back to Montreal including former leaf Vezina candidate Soupy the Sieve to be the main man in Laval. That's almost Eklund-like in scope.
One thing is clear. That team needs a hell of a lot more than a goalie. And I'd say a better goalie than the Habs have to offer, plus a defender or two.
It proves the difference in the two teams. While the Habs are well ahead of them in the standings, because the Oil have their dynamic duo, the thinking is they can add some pieces and turn it right around. Habs on the other hand are missing that elite starting point.
Watched the game on the rewind. Good effort tonight, they didn't fold up like a cheap tent like they did in Boston. Give Monty the net for a while, unless he's being traded to the poor old Oilers. What a tire fire that team is.
I double dadario you to get more diadario. Meh we beat a team that wont make the playoffs for five years, I thought the red barron looked way overmatched against Mason the Charlie. Montamotobo saves us again, I think we should go for the lottery pick.
I still can't believe HuGo got someone to take that bad signing off their hands. Hopefully Hoff is still projecting his next moves well in advance so our alert D can pick off some of his soft passes. GYFHG!
Button is right, if Montreal wants to win they have to throw it in to the corners and go get it. Make the Sharks D turn and skate. Hit them. Hit them again.
Gee two wins in California. Can't remember the last time that might've been. Sweet move by Yodelin', I think he should get more peaceful top 6 minutes.
Two wins in California, probably 20 years at least. That was a lot harder than it needed to be but I will take the win and the 2 points thank you very much. I'm not sure why Yodel doesn't get more top 6 ice time or even PP time, he's got the moves and the shot. Must be something lacking we can't see, a little self confidence maybe?
While he's far better than having to listen to Gawley, I wish Button would stop trying to play the Hab homer. I find it off-putting. Just want honest, unbiased commentary please.
Is it just me or did Nature's shoot out goal look surprisingly like to move MSL made during a practice last year - I remember seeing a clip and it looked very similar
LA back-checking is absolutely ferocious. Between that and Habs forwards trying to make plays that just don't exist, they managed all of one shot on net the whole first period.
It got very little fanfare (because...Montreal), but congrats to the Carabins. Montreal is now home to the Grey Cup and Vanier Cup. That's awesome but there is one other cup I'd much rather see paraded through the streets of Montreal.
If they want to truly tank, trade Monty. He's the only one I think could steal games they have no business in. I also don't see him as the long term solution for the Habs.
I dunno if it's tank time yet. Listening to Aaron Ward, it's hard to expect more than the 4 points they got in CA against heavier, more experienced and determined oppositoon in Anaheim and LA especially. A lot of tgeir recent matchups have been against teams like that, and without Savard or LC on the back-end.
I love Struble's game so far. I just think Whiskey was in a funk that he's coming out of and MonoHab, Rawhide and Powerhorse could turn on some more scoring at any time. I predict more wins than losses for the second quarter of the season.
I just looked at the schedule for the next 21 games. Up to Jan 13th vs the Oilers. Best record I see them having is 8-10-3 over that period. And that might be generous. But I predict it starts with a W tonight.
I've got a graphic of my prediction saved with a W-L-O (OT loss) for each game. I'll update it and post it after Jan 13 to see how close I was and whether I should replace some of the so-called experts on the telly.
I was being a little facetious when I brought up the Tank brigade. They won't intentionally do that, the players want to win obviously but they are the second youngest team in the league, very inexperienced on D and have questionable goaltending. I think they will be doing well if they are even close to a .500 hockey team. This is only Year 2 of the rebuild following the deconstruction starting in the Fall of 2021 and leading up to the dismissal of bargain bin and do harm. Still a ways to go.
There is much talk of course about trades for picks for some of the vets. I wouldn't necessarily move out all those guys. I would keep Powerhouse and Savard for another year at least and sign MonaHab to 3-4 year extension. They don't really need any more picks, they should be trading some of those (many actually) for some scoring. The goalies, I don't know what to do.
I'm going to be really pissed off at HuGo if they trade Monahan for some late 1st round pick. If they trade him, there better be an NHL ready or established player coming back. Enough of gambling on Gary's little (fixed) lottery bullshit. I want players, players that can score some fucking goals. They better leave Columbus tonight with a win and Patrick Laine.

ReplyDeleteFun Grey Cup CHampionship parade.
ReplyDeleteAll the kids out of school because of the teachers' and HCWs' strike too.
DeleteLoved the swearing. MVP and Coach chimed in nicely.
DeletePéladeau is a bit weird ...
Strobelight confirmed to be in tonight's lineup.

ReplyDeleteNo ducks for me tonight. Way too late...looking forward to the weekend day games though!

ReplyDeleteAll about the benjamins.
DeleteI've been gifted a lot of Habs wear over the years but it has been a while since I dropped my own coin on some.

ReplyDeleteI will take Button's homerism over gawley's biased Habs hatred any day of the week. But that's just me.
DeleteBonus, the wretched, pathetic leaf lose to ... *snicker* ... tanking Chicago, with the Core 4 getting zip on the scorecard.
ReplyDeleteNo big deal if Montreal loses to Emperor Legault's Kings tomorrow, 4 out of 6 in California is a good trip.
Only got home in time to see it and the SO...a win is a win. Nice one boys!
ReplyDeleteJust seeing now that yesterday LC/Sheriff was put on IR and GI Finn was called out to join them today in LA.
ReplyDeleteTravelling to NB today so will miss the game. I'll record it to watch tomorrow night if worth it.
ReplyDeleteGYMFHG!!!! Beat Emporer Legault's Kings!
What's up with Commodore Perry getting stuffed in a shoebox by the Hawks? It's gone from odd to inexplicable to weirdly suspicious.
ReplyDeleteIs it just me or did Nature's shoot out goal look surprisingly like to move MSL made during a practice last year - I remember seeing a clip and it looked very similar

ReplyDeleteNot holding out much hope for the third...Kings are a good team....Habs are trying but haven't generated a thing...I don't see any goals coming
ReplyDeleteDon't think I've seen a team play the Habs this hard all season. Just relentless and strong.
ReplyDeleteAlain has let in those shitty kind of goals all year...sof as fuck
ReplyDeleteDidn't think so...never mind...
ReplyDeleteGuess I don't have to bother watching the recording of this game.
ReplyDeleteNah...The M...give it a miss...you've seen this before...
DeleteSo @Saint Paddy, are you ready for the Clash of the Titans this afternoon?
ReplyDeleteMac Jones.... Ugh.
ReplyDeleteLooks like Belichik saw enough of Mr. Jones.
DeleteSpeaking of Joneses, if I had my way, Daniel Jones would never see the field again for the Giants. This DeVito kid looks good.
I was mercifully travelling back from NB and missed the clash..
DeleteIt was a pretty dull affair. I'll take the W and you get the higher draft pick.
Delete3rd pick as it stands. New QB or Marvin Harrison, Jr.
DeleteOr, if BB is still in charge, a Left Tackle or he trades down.
It got very little fanfare (because...Montreal), but congrats to the Carabins. Montreal is now home to the Grey Cup and Vanier Cup. That's awesome but there is one other cup I'd much rather see paraded through the streets of Montreal.
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately, that particular Cup is still a ways off in the future. I just hope I'm still around to see it.
DeleteIs it too soon to fire up the Tank brigade? The Habs don't have the Hoff around anymore to help, he's busy getting the Sharks Slackin' for Macklin...
ReplyDeleteIf ever we see Thinman pencilled in, that's when we'll know.
Deletereality is a beech. Yes tank hard and long
