"In his decision, Bettman stated that Rielly had sufficient time to engage Greig differently, “e.g. with a push or a shove or even by dropping his gloves to fight.”
“Had he done so, there likely would have been no need for supplemental discipline,” Bettman wrote.
The commissioner also disputed the claims that Rielly did not intend to hit Greig’s head, stating that the cross-check was delivered high and forcefully.
Bettman said much of the testimony offered by Rielly, Toronto GM Brad Treliving and president Brendan Shanahan concerned whether Greig’s slapshot was provocative but called that discussion “utterly irrelevant.”
“Mr. Rielly’s actions were not taken in self-defence. They were not accidental and they were not reflexive. They were not simply careless or merely reckless,” Bettman wrote.
“With plenty of time to think about what he was going to do next, Mr. Rielly approached Mr. Greig from the side, then used his stick as a weapon to deliver the kind of blow to the head that the league has repeatedly made clear will not be tolerated.”
LOL @theM I thought the same thing. That would have been hilarious to watch the CotU implode.
Though in the end, maybe the league did them a favour with the suspension and Mr. Rielly is the guy they should consider trading, looking at their record without him.
Geoff The Molson in his never ending quest for more money on the backs of Habs fans will now be tearing out between 200 and 500 seats in the reds and replacing them with more expensive seats as well as access to private dining etc. Currently they say a season ticket in the reds down there with the straights is approx $12,000.00. A seat in this new Parterre section would now cost between $20,000.00 and $29,000.00 ...... Wow what a great idea wonder what else would be included ... maybe a pic with that orange thing would be included. I used to think that Geoff was a classy guy well no more he's just like any rich guy just a money grubber. Sorry Go Habs
Brian Wilde advocates trading some of the Habs excess D for some forwards who can score. I agree. He also suggests Buffalo as a trading partner as they have an excess in good forwards and very little good D after Dahlin and Power. Hell yeah! I know who I would be trading for : Mr. Jeff Skinner! At least he wouldn't be scoring against Montreal any more!
And Marc Dumont suggests the Habs goalies, especially Monty, can't get into any kind of rhythm because they can't play enough games or probably even practice properly. Again, I agree. C'mon Kent, solve at least this problem so Monty and whoever is left can build some confidence for the rest of the season.
Welcome Colin White, best of luck in Laval Brandon Gignac, hope you can help get the Rocket at least into the playoffs. Which Tank commander wins tonight, Hughes or Dubas? Habs can't win the second of a back to back so Kyle should be the winner!
Wasn't Colin White the next great super sen at one point? Another HUGO reclamation project perhaps? Get em cheap and have MSL instil a winning attitude back into their game? Time will tell...Fuck the tank -JFW!
Boston kid. High draft, high hickey IQ, versatile, great skater. Kent Hughes was his agent so he knows him well. Maybe under MSL he'll learn how to put it all together?
Yep used to be 14 teams. 10 provinces, northern ON, Canada (last year's champ), 2 territories. The last few years Nunavut and 3 wild card teams because there are so many great teams missing out from the big curling areas. No Nunavut this year so 4 wild cards.
She needed the W last night to get into the playoffs. Unfortunately, she looked more like she was playing on my team. Lots of misses on wide open hits.
@Saint Paddy, enjoy your playoffs, the lowly Habs won't be.
Mrs. The M is away this Saturday, I was going to watch the game, now I'm not sure I want to. Maybe the Rocket or the Sea Dogs instead. March 8th can't come soon enough just to generate some interest. Watching this bunch lately sure isn't. Like Red Fisher used to say: Show me the players!
I only watched bits and pieces but since trading Monahan it's been a downward spiral. I said all along he was the de facto #1 center because he is a high-end talented veteran. Suzuki is coming into that but he's basically on his own. CC is useless these days, a perimeter player. Slaf is regressing a bit, but you expect that from a 19 year old kid. The rest of the lines are pretty much trash, I can see something in Newhook but he's got no help either. I'm pretty sure Hughes could see this coming and wants one more top 5 pick. He will get it.
Next season will probably tell the tale for this team. All the amateur Habs fansites, like EOTP and others, like to paint a rosy picture about the future. All I see at the moment is a team that can't score much, can't defend a lead, can't kill a penalty, how are these guys going to learn how to win if they can't do the basics? What are the coaches teaching them? I hope it's not all xGF% or xGA% or E= MC2.
The Monty/Allen/Primeau situation is pretty much the only bad move I've seen Hughes make so far. None of them can get into a rhythm and it screwed Allen the hardest. This should never, ever have gone on this long. Primeau should have been on waivers or traded by the end of November at the latest. I think Hughes just got greedy wanting something that wasn't there.
What little I watched this afternoon I liked what I saw in our new Mr White He seems big and fast and I believe he was a first rounder Some how when Hugo picks someone up like this it doesn’t have the same feel as when bicep bergy went dumpster diving Anyway there’s no hope for 23/24 so we just have to find the little things to draw some joy Slick Nick got two galley got one and I think the Powerhorse got a post and a crossbar …. Go Habs
Whiskey needs to go to the 2nd line, maybe with Dach next year, he's too small for 1st line duties, has a hard time going up against another teams Top 2 D.
I'm watching a great show on Apple TV, Masters of the Air, about the B-17 flying fortresses bombing Germany during WW II. I've watched the 5th episode 3 times. Right up there with Band of Brothers. I wasn't as fussy about The Pacific.
At the Habs skills competition yesterday "Not surprisingly, Cole Caufield won the shooting accuracy event, needing six shots and 12.386 seconds to hit the four targets. Gallagher and Josh Anderson only needed five shots each, but both took more time than Caufield."
The irony in Josh Anderson's accuracy at this event is actually painful.
Just scrolling through the toronto sports network cause I’m bored and the amount of splooging over underpants is unmeasurable Article after article after survey it’s just fucking sad in a way It’s like idol worship It’s going to be hilarious to watch them crash and burn again in the playoffs Still no defense still no goalie What dumbass did to that team was laughable all under the watchful eye of shanaban And now he has turned his attention to the large flightless birds Everyone is old and no picks He’s captain disaster omg Go Habs
The SFU worship of the wretched leaf is indeed ridiculous, but man, they are on a heater, 7 wins in a row. I wish our team could do something even remotely close to that, like 2 in a row. But, the sad sack Habs are their management are trying to convince us the future is bright. Sadly, I remain skeptical about that. Is there a matthews, marner, or nylander coming Montreal's way? We'll see I guess.
I know, the games start tomorrow.
ReplyDeleteFresh threads are always a welcome sight! Merci!

I think Gary should have added a couple more games to Mr. Reilly's suspension just for good measure.
DeleteF U SFU.

That's just more coin for Gary to siphon off for his pet project in Arizona.
DeleteMaybe Gary has a thing for mullets
ReplyDeleteYa never know
Go Habs
Never ever forget...Buttman is the antichrist..he represents everything that is wrong with hockey.
ReplyDeleteThe game is on leafnet so that probably means effin gary gawley, I'll have to find another source to watch the game.
ReplyDeleteYou know the Habs are down a goal already, right? Skinner will score a goal he always does.
ReplyDeleteSherrif!
ReplyDeleteA X cancels out the Skinner goal, the Monty foils Skinner. Bon.
ReplyDeleteStrobelight!
ReplyDeleteWell that was dumb ... Mr. Army. Trying to get too fancy.
ReplyDeleteSkinner ... a sure bet.
ReplyDeleteCan they kill a penalty?
ReplyDeleteYes finally
DeleteX-Man just crushing people tonight.
ReplyDeleteSuzuki should be a serious contender for the Selke. He won't be, but he should be top 3.
ReplyDeleteWell that PP was a mess. Whiskey not looking quite right
ReplyDeleteWhiskey is sour tonight. I'd bench him.
ReplyDeleteFor a big man Anderson gives up the puck easily...
ReplyDelete1st line doing dick all tonight.
ReplyDelete1st line got nuthin' tonight.
ReplyDeleteThat's enough. Win, lose, at this point it doesn't matter. A win feels good but a loss helps the 3rd (and hopefully final) Tank season.

ReplyDeleteThis is a bad hockey team...but bienvenue BlanCHe!
ReplyDeleteGarbage hockey but the curling is good. Seems to be a lot more teams? @Saint Paddy?

DeleteSo 18 teams. 2 groups of 9. Top 3 from each division make the playoffs.
DeleteOur team has 1 more week before our playoffs. We've faltered the last few weeks but we'll be there, top 16 of the 34 team league in the playoffs
DeleteGo Mr White
ReplyDeleteGood luck
Seems Mr Hughs was an agent to a great many players
Gives him the insight from inside
Nice now let’s see a perfect tank
Go Habs
Strobelight down and out. Blown knee? Looked bad.
ReplyDeleteAre we gonna go two full games without a single goal by any forward?
ReplyDeleteThe B.C. skip Grandy is a cutie.

DeleteWTF...what the hell man...the game is already over! Missed a memo there..mdamm!
ReplyDeleteIt's just a stupid rumour on a stupid halfassed site but I would love a Sean Monahan return to Montreal this summer.
ReplyDeleteWhoever Montreal drafts this summer is probably 3 years away so why not offer Monahan a 3 or 4 year deal at $5.5 mil?
