[Overheard in the locker room just now]

MSL: what are we gonna do?
Devo: throw up all over ourselves!
    MSL: HUH?
Devo: oh, I thought I heard you saying that, coach.
MSL: Deve, Deve, Deve, no! That's what you should not do! It's bad. Please stop! STOP doing it!! Throwing up on yourself is bad! Not good. No

  2. I responded to our west coast friend oleg on the previous thread so I've copied it over here:

not watching this homestand live, but following on highlites.
    1. is it just me, or does sportsnet have better highlites than nhl.com? not much different, but usually a little longer?

    2. is it just me, or have the boys found a lot of energy since St. Patrick 2.0 has joined the line-up?

    3. is it just me, or is powerhouse playing really well this yr (in general). every highlite, i can see him busting in on goal, delivering a big hit, dropping the gloves... basically doing everything he was supposed to be doing... except cashing his chances... 'sigh'

    4. speaking of this... is it just me, or are the boys really really good at creating grade-a chances and almost always failing to finish? this isnt just limited to one-off chances by barron, dvork, lipp, whoever is in the right place at the right time, but for even guys like cpt nick, CC, and heineman?

    1. I don't use either site so can't comment.

    2. It seems like they are playing better, but they actually were before Wool came back.

    3. The now ponyhorse has reinvented himself, playing more of a checking, shit disturber role, killing penalties and potting the odd goal. He is delivering more hits and has won a couple of big fights, he has earned his spot.

    4. You're not wrong, they do leave a lot of grade A chances unfinished especially breakaways as we witnessed against Washington last week.

    5. Yes, they are kind of hanging around a wildcard spot but I wouldn't hold my breath. They are still a bottom feeder with a lot of teams in front of them. They would need a good 6 or 7 game win streak to get into the (real) picture and play .500 or better to get in.

    Cheers!

    5. season isnt lost. all i wanted was for them to still be alive come xmas/ St.P's return, and i have my wish. if they average 3-2-1 rest of way, ide be satisfied with whatever fate befals them. GYFHG! aside from upgrading our goaltender position, i feel legitimately encouraged they can get some coaches fired in the playoffs!

  18. One of the headlines at EOTP this morning -- "The Montreal Canadiens are Quitters" -- that may have been true in the 3rd period last night. I quit myself after Pitt got the 5th goal, you could feel the collapse coming. At this point does it matter any more? They are half way through the '5 Year Plan', maybe they will improve, maybe not. If HuGo are content to let things stand then a top 5 pick will be there in 2025. If they want to compete until March or April then a change of some sort has to happen. And soon. My own take, and many others I'm sure, is they need some help. That is not some 19 year old in Russia or a 20 year old in Laval. They need a good 30ish center to take some heat of Nick. They need another Monahan. Maybe a Kadri is available? Hughes has tons of high picks in 2025. He should be able to help his team out. They need a good, veteran leader like Monahan was. I read an article this morning on Radio-Canada, after the game last night Kris Letang explicitly said 'you can't win with all young players 25 and under.' Montreal does not have a veteran like Bryan Rust or Sid or Letang who can lift a team up. Guys like Armia, Anderson, Dvorak or even Gallagher can do that. They are role players only. Kirby Dach is a shadow of himself, Slafkovsky is currently lost and regressing. Laine needs time. So, if HuGo are sticking to 'the plan' then we can expect more blowouts like this occasionally. And that's too bad because it doesn't need to happen.

  19. I kind of expected a tough year for the teams I root for. Montreal, New York football team, even the Sea Dogs are rebuilding but you expect that from your Junior hockey team. No, I was hoping for the Habs to be somewhat competitive, maybe .500, and I thought the Giants might win 5 or 6 games but what a disaster they are. Golf starts in a few weeks...

  25. The Saint John Sea Dogs won back to back games yesterday and today winning 5-4 both times, an OT win Friday against Cape Breton and today in a SO over the Bathurst (soon to be St. John's) Titan. A good way to end the first half of the QMJHL season with a young rebuilding team playing .500 hockey with a 16-16 record. If only the Habs could muster the effort to get to that level I'd be happy.

    1. That 10-8-1 record would be a 90 pt pace and hence 'in the mix'.
But Mr Hyde's 1-9-1 is putting the kibosh on that plan.

      Delete
    2. The 1-9-1 record is the result of not having a decent 2C behind Nick, trading Monahan and thr failure of Dach to recover has led to this record and another top 5 pick to be had.

Speaking of top 5 picks, HuGo had the misfortune of picking 1st overall in 2022, one of the weaker drafts in recent memory. Looks like Cooley will be the best of that particular crop. And it looks like HuGo miffed again in 2023 passing on star forward Michov and going with the tried and true Habs formula ... when in doubt take a defenceman. They better hope they picked right with Demidov.

    Nice
    Good for Mr. Wool
Hopefully this will jump start us.
Been reading the comparisons of us and the sabers and it becomes apparent that there is a very fine line on a rebuild
They are 11 years into this and going nowhere and they have a lot of talent
Makes you think about a losing environment
How losing can just become the norm
I mean on paper Barfalo should be an in the mix kind of team
They have an owner who gives a shit they have Lindy and a bunch of very high picks well the ones they haven't traded away and a patient fan base
    So what gives
It's something that we don't want to have happen to us
    Hockey is a fickle mistress
Growing up for me the Habs just always won the cup
The beaners could not beat us we just felt it and the leaf were loosers
But now there are a gaggle of rebuilds ongoing, the sens, the hawks, the dead things, barfalo and us
The rags have just completed theirs and still there are bad games and loosing streaks
So it's a delicate process and like MSL says there has to be a passion
there also has to be chemistry and a very tight room
    Fingers crossed
    Go Habs
Why mired at the bottom season after season

I didn't get too excited by the win last night, the Swords are a hot mess. We'll see how they fare this weekend. I wonder who will be in net for the 2nd game in the b2b, it shouldn't be Primeau. 53. Welcome, Alexandre Carrier. Best of luck, Red Barron. This steadies our right side D for the next couple of years while Reinbacher and Mailloux get up to speed. Matheson won't have to try playing the right side again, which he was so dismal at in that Pens debacle he might have been more effective doing Kung Fu or tapestry.

Also a good sign HuGo have no rose-coloured glasses on, and can admit to themselves when a trade they lived at the time didn't exactly work out. Moving on.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I consulted with the former Blues scout for the Q, he gave the trade the thumbs up. Said he liked Carrier, a little under-sized but a good skater and puck mover. Good enough for me. That just leaves Matheson as the only clumsy footed puck fumbler, if they can swap him for a more stable D man that would be great. Hutson is now the PP guy so MM is irrelevant in my view. Or, drop him down to the 2nd pairing. Never hurts to have another chez nous on the team especially if Savvy is dealt at the deadline.

      Delete
  54. I just noticed that RoCH "The Sweater" Carrier is already on IR. Habs have been too healthy this year, so trading for injured players.

  55. Interesting article over at leafnet (I know) about rebuilding a hockey team. There's been lots of ink spilled on how Buffalo has utterly failed in their attempt. The crux of it is : the scorched earth aka the Shanaplan is not always the way to go. The kids need veterans to insulate them and teach them how to win. I think Hughes as kind of done an 'in between' type by keeping some vets like Gallagher, Savard and maybe Anderson. Personally, I advocated for keeping Monahan to insulate Nick, he wasn't that old and I would have given him the 5 year deal like Columbus did, but maybe he wanted to move on anyway. And, Hughes made a mistake letting Jake Allen go instead of Primeau. It's hindsight but Primeau is not an NHL goalie and Jake would have been great support for Monty plus he really like it in Monrteal, being close to home in N.B. I hope Hughes can find a competent backup eventually.

Anyway, I hope that Habs management don't sell off too many players at the deadline even though they will be a lottery team. Dvorak would be the only one I would let go.

    ReplyDelete

    1. You are half right, Gorton and John Davidson would have made that pick. Hughes was still negotiating contracts at that time. I read today that Gorton and his scouts muffed 3 picks in row, Liam Andersen 7th overall 2017, Vitaly Kravtsov 9th in 2018 and Kakko 2nd in 2019. Ouch.

Well I remember Louis Leblanc as well as other nameless picks that were wasted
I think the Hugo era has been better than previous regimes
At least they didn’t trade for Kaberle
      Probably not available
      Go Habs

      Delete
    4. The Habs have muffed a multitude of 1st round picks going back decades. Demidov MIGHT hit. Reinbacher same. Slaf, jury is still out, Mesar unlikely. Logan maybe, Guhle should be OK, CC seems like a hit, Kid KoHo nope, EAPole nope, SergaCHevy a winner for sure but sacrificed for the Golden Child who didn't pan out. That's 8 years with 3 serviceable players to show from Round 1. Luckily they've done better in later rounds. When I stop and think about it it might be 75% bullshit luck more than scouting that gets you good players.

    4. You are correct, it was Poehling aka EAP (I think we called him) to Pitt with Petry Dish. Rem Pitlick went to Pitt with Mike Hoffman to bring Dish back with Casey DeSmith. Montreal had the market cornered on Pitlicks for a while, they had Rem, a waiver wire pick up from Minny, his brother Rhett at the University of Minnesota and briefly, Tyler who came back in the Toffoli trade to Calgary.

  79. forgot who mentioned it but the boys are 1-9-something when cpt nick doesnt score a pont. i too wasnt ready to pin the blame on him for this yr's shortcoming, but whoever gave the response about kirby falling far short of expectations is the eureka (correct) answer. i didnt think about it until seeing those words, but yes. lacking a 2C is why we are only starting our season now with wooly mammoth in our line-up.

another thing i noticed is that kirby, cole and newhook were all first rounders in the same draft year. so lucky to have all three on same roster. what would happen if all three played on same line?

    1. If he can pick up a few more goals he'd be running away with the rookie scoring. I know he's a D man but even if he had a half dozen or so, he'd make that call a lot tougher

    Watching AC/roCh on antichambre.

    Beyond impressed.

    Coach MSL called him ‘intelligent’.

    Dude called himself ‘Cartesian’.

Do the math FHFers, we may have a beauty.

    1. Cartesian? Hah!

Can't stress enough the value of players who WANT to play for the CH. Carrier was another Hughes client from his player-agent days. Solid D that plugs the big hole on the right side. It means Savvy has less resosibility aand play to his strengths.

Habs fans: this is our moment of Zen.

Cartesian is a plane as in three dimensional reference at least in English and with a mathematical and physics application
    Strange but works

  92. With the kids home, I didn't watch the game or check the score, so I'm watching the 7am replay(sadly the SFU broadcast).

    Some comments/observations:

    - I didn't know Uncle Fester was coaching in the NHL
    - Garry Galley keeps getting worse. On the Wooly PFL goal, he went on and on how it should have been Caufield that got the penalty instead of Larkin, who clearly arm barred Caufield. I don't want an ass kissing homer doing the games, but at least somebody that doesn't clearly hate them would be nice.
-Wooly PFL with the record 8 PP goals in a row for the team, overtaking beaners' Phil Esposito is cool. Though I'd like to see Whiskey pot a few again.
    - RoCH looks great. This may be Hughes's most important trade yet (aside from Wooly PFL).
    - Fast Lane has to be a top 3 Calder candidate. I've mentioned before, Heiny is under the radar at 6th in points and third in goals behind only Michkov and Cellebrini. Put him on the 2nd line with Laine and Dach (or Newhook).
    - Dach is still invisible, but I guess we're giving him a year of leeway?
    - Monty is looking for that starting job in the 'Slightly More Interesting Than the All-Star Game' Cup. He's playing well.
    - Next game vs BJs and a chance to leapfrog another fellow bottom feeder

    Good game. Good win

We continue to win meaningless games agaist bottom feeders. We used to lose meaningful games agaist bottom feeders so I guess its glass half full.

  94. Good Morning FHFriends!

Like Saint Paddy I had to watch the game this am, I recorded it so I could FFWD through much of Gawley's infernal blathering. He was wrong about the supposed non-call on Whiskey and one on Fast Lane later, that's just his shitty beaner bias showing through. Can't wait until he is fired.

I'm thoroughly impressed with RoCH, he is miles ahead of Von Klumsy. Great acquisition by HuGo, he steadies that whole D. As mentioned it may be a turning point in the season. However, I would caution that Les Boys have a tough stretch ahead playing a bunch of powerhouse teams after Christmas. I'm going to just enjoy the moment of pulling ahead of the Dull Knives and the Dead Things in the standings. The Habs are NOT LAST in the standings or the division. Baby steps.

Finally, a huge shout out and Thank You to St. Patrick and his Islanders for shutting up 'the panel' last night, they hardly mentioned the wretched leaf all night focussing on Winnipeg and Montreal. Merci!

  95. Montreal has climbed the standings and dropped out of the Martone/Hagens/Misa territory and into Caleb Desnoyers country. I'm down for that.

So I understand the von clumsy for RoCh as it involves plugging a hole on right side D
    And yay
It also strikes me that we appear to be entering the tweaking stage of our Rebuild
    Get a big fin check
Get an experienced right side D check
    Play the good goalie check
We appear to be exiting from the sign lots of young guys and draft high young guys
    This bodes well I’m thinking
We have some dead weight to shed but I think we are looking at our base bundle going forward
We have talent marinating in many places and the Glorious ship CH seems to have been stabilized
    So what’s next
Look for good deals and stay focused
    Time to breathe a bit
    Go Habs

  97. Yay! My wretched New York Giants have tanked their way to the #1 pick in the 2025 NFL Draft !

Chatter over at Big Blue View is to keep Shaboll as GM and HC and take a QB named Sanders or Ward. I don't follow college football so I have no clue who is who. Just get the best player available and let Saint Paddy's Patriots have the leftovers.

    Meanwhile, Go Bills !!
