Reaching .500 by the end of the year after a horrid start is quite an accomplishment. Kudos to Coach Marty and all his staff on sticking with their plan. It's finally paying dividends aided by the arrival of three key players, Wool, RoCH and Kirby along with the revival of Pony and Gally. Add in some clutch goaltending and it's a new ball game. Time will tell if they are still 'in the mix' come March.
Meanwhile, Montreal is in freefall in the Tankathon standings and I'm OK with it. I don't think Hughes and company need to pick 12 times this June, lots of wheeling and dealing to be had.
I'm gonna start 25 with something I noticed on Doobies first start. I know he's 6'5 so a comparison is easy...but some of his gloves moves and leg kicks were...dare I say it...Drydenesque...too early to hang a big tag like that on the kid but I wanted to put it out here - wondering if it was just me?
Well shiver my timbers the post Christmas death trip somehow got reversed Well I’ll be dainged any more of this and we might just be in the mix in April Woa woa tabernak Anyway on such a happy note happy new year to my FHF friends hope you all have great years filled with good fortune and happy trails Fingers crossed we don’t get smoked in Chicago Go Habs
I'm thinking Habs fans should send thank you's to Barry Trotz for a) outbidding Kent Hughes for Marchessault and 2) gifting Alex Carrier to the Habs for Barron Von Klumsy just before Christmas.
Indeed! Turns out shifting from coaching to managing ain't so easy.
Got to admit though, I feel a little bad for Barron. Lots of bad press out there already after only 3 games with his new club (0g, 0a, -3). Hope he withstands the onslaught.
Yes feel bad for him He was sent down after a short tryout Hugo had high hopes for him righty D and he parlayed Don’t know how he ever became such a high D pick He’s timid be better at soccer or cooking Not a D man in this NHL Sad Go Habs
Don't get me wrong I'm not gloating about that trade, I had high hopes for a good Nova Scotia lad. In his first game at the Bell Center I remember his elite skating, how he could walk the blue line in the o-zone with backwards skating crossovers and a good shot. But, he somehow lost his confidence and fumbled the puck way too many times as the last man back, when he and Matheson were on the ice together you were holding your breath and praying they didn't turn it over, which they did frequently. I didn't want Barron to get the Breezer treatment, it was best for him to move on. I hope he finds success in Nashville.
If Hockey Canada (and TSN) thinks that leaf prospects are going to lead them to a gold medal, they may want to rethink that notion. Look at last year, the Canadian team led by Easton Cowan and Fraser Minten got bounced in the quarter finals by the Czechs and looks like a repeat performance tonight with the same Mr. Cowan who was hyped by the leafblowers on the TSN panel early in the tourney. I think it looks good on them. Very poorly picked team with questionable coaching.
They were being questioned on the player selections from the outset Lots of high scoring kids left off the team Wouldn’t want to think they wanted certain players to be the stars Hmmm. Strokes chin Anyway this turney is an embarrassment in our place after all and all management should be tarred and feathered and run out of town Bring on the hawks Go Habs
Shifting focus. It's a bit early for scoreboard watching as lots can happen in the next 45 games, but it's fun to watch. A hot streak can vault a team into the wildcard. A cold streak can send them back to the basement. So don't pay any attention to the talking heads who, just because they're paid to yak on the telly, think they know anymore than we do regarding what is going to happen with our or any other team.
That said, last night was a really good night for the Habs. Bruins lost in regulation. They sit in the 3rd spot in the division, 7 points up on the Habs but have played 3 more games. FLA lost in regulation. They're not a target, but that's still good. Detroit, who is behind us, beat Columbus, who is ahead of us. In regulation. Check. Senaturds lost in regulation. Excellent. Equal games played. 3 points ahead in the last wild card spot. Philly (one point ahead, 2 games more played) lost in regulation. Nice! TB lost...to San Jose...in regulation. Bwahahahaha. This team more than any, like the M, I am looking forward to its downfall. Maybe this is the beginning. I see the attendance of that game in SJ was just over 11,000.
In conclusion, it would have been a perfect night except the leaf won. Now they beat the Isles who are just behind the Habs, so it's actually a good thing. Except it's never a good thing when they win. Good news is they could run the table but then run into their greatest nemesis anyway...the playoffs.
I was looking at all the games being played last night and thinking those would all be good results. Now, we just have to hope that Montreal takes advantage and disposes of a weak Chicago bunch tonight. G Y F H G ! ! !
I read an article that was with shivery legs the thought in CotU that maybe this is the last kick at the can for the fab core four... Underpants with his undisclosed medical issue and Jonny Toronto getting old smelly and usless what the fuck is this team going to do ?? Reload and shanaplan again? With what draft picks? No number one this year, Jonny Toronto and little Mitchy are ufa end of this year The Leaf are swirling around the drain with no outlet and no pipeline Oh the misery is coming Go Habs
Monty starting tonight. So Doobie vs the Avs tomorrow. That better work out because it seems they are playing Monty to get the 'sure win' vs the weaker team.
It's DaCH vs Dach tonight. Maybe the Thompson Twins will make an appearance.
My scout buddy and I were texting during the game last night. He said Easton Cowan isn't as good as he thinks he is.
Team Canada management being raked over the coals today and deservedly so. Several high scoring forwards left out along with Zayne Pareyk, they tried to win with grinders. And, the lack of discipline started at the top.
Cameron looked disinterested. With no offence towards anybody here :-) perhaps a guy collecting his old age security cheque isn't the right guy to coach a bunch of teens in these times.
Getting your old age check is a clear indication that your day is done Time to reload management scouts coaches everybody Bubye This is two years running now Merci salute le visit
Oy. I tune in 3 minutes late and they're playing 3 on 5 already. Then bang. Down a goal. And no Savvy. No Wool. Too bad. But good for Pez to finally see the ice.
Lots of giv'er in this Hawks team. I hope Pez and Strobelight shake off the rust before the 2nd period. There are two points available tonight if they work; they can't take this team lightly and expect to win. Now GYFHG!
Crazy that the Habs were so stacked in goalie depth, they had to leave Tony unprotected. I wonder how many of those 70s cups they could have won with Espo instead of Dryden.
If I was Coach Marty, I would bench Slafkovsky for the 3rd period and put Dach on the 1st line to try and get a goal. This is a shitshow. They will be fortunate to even get a loser point.
You know all the talk of Fast Lane overshadows Heineken He’s a rookie with 10 goals playing on the 3rd or 4th line He’s physical and has a great shot forget which trade he came with But nice addition Go Habs
I remember him saying that he wanted Heineken That he was not just a toss in Anyway we go 2 for Florida beat the pissers and now the hawks are taking us down Shhsh Go Habs
Missing Wool and Savvy. Haven't seen Pez or Strobelight in the ice in the last 30 minutes. Makes it tough on the rest of the guys if you can't trust your depth guys to play.
BTW, when and how did the Hawks acquire Seth Jones, Bertuzzi, Foligno, Vlasic, Hall and Teraveinan? Some good players there and they all played their hearts out tonight.
The M - Tony O did win a cup...with the Habs in '69 🙂. Though Vachon was the goalie of record, playing all games. The Gumper was injured so Tony sat on the bench.
I forgot that Tony O. won a Cup with the Habs even though he played no games. Good catCH. I wonder if he actually got his name inscribed on it though? I thought you had to play at least a few minutes at least in the playoffs. I'm pretty sure Gump got his name on it that year.
I stopped watching last night after the 3rd Hawks goal. Slaf ended up with an F from me. Mr. Useless.
They are a different team without Laine. I never imagined he would be such a difference maker. Slaf has a similar frame. He'll never be the elite scorer, but he should watch Laine video to see how he handles himself with and without the puck.
If Slafkovsky should watch anyone I would recommend Cole Caufield or Brendan Gallagher. Players half his size but twice the heart. Cole has speed to burn and a sniper's shot. Does Slafkovsky even know how to shoot? And Lep is fearless going to the net. If 20 could figure that out he would prosper. Plus, those two along with Suzuki spent time in Junior, NCAA and the AHL until they were ready. That's where things went wrong with JS and to a certain extent Dach who went straight to the NHL.
My oldest bro, only 61, has to go into an assisted living residence. So my other bros are cleaning out his apt. He collected a lot of hockey cards. They sent me a pic of some including a Guy Lafleur. It is a head shot, and in the lower right corner is a puck graphic and it says DEFENSE. I'm thinking maybe that is worth some money. He kept them in good condition, but not mint so my bro says other than Mario's rookie card they probably aren't worth more than a couple hundred total (there are hundreds of cards).
Anyway just wondering if anybody recalls that card. My bro with the memory says he remembers he was in grade 2 when that card came out because he remembers the big head. So 71 or 72.
Just did a quick check on that card, it's a 1975-76 card that is a headshot with and 'uncorrected error' which is the defense word on the front. In good shape it's worth about $37.00.
love the patience and the absence of panic/ desperation by the boys. is this a step up in maturity or just a reflection of a long tiring road trip? whatever... im GLAD coach put in monty last night and deploying doobies tn vs mile high. our coach has balls boys!
After those four wins, the January schedule suddenly looks less daunting. Keep 'er going lads! Get Wool some chicken soup and keep him away from the fellas on the plane.
Watching the hilites of the Avalanche game Doobie tracks the puck like some kind of fiend. Just watching him you get this sense that he is supremely dialed in and has the strength and flexibility of a young man like a younger Price We should be careful with this one short sample yes but to CHester he looks like the real McCoy And good on the boys for their road success probably some good bonding time as well New years in Vegas doesn't hurt specially coming off some big wins Now lets keep it going Go Habs
Scobbie Doobie do. I cant recall a goalie hold his glove hand up the whole game. My worry is we wont be able to afford him. Sign him to the std 8 for 8 contract now. Whiskey has to teach Cpt Hook how to raise the puck. The force is growing in DaCH.
On his first save in the shootout he flicked the puck at druid ala young Pricer It's like here, here's your puck, I don't need it anymore HA! mange mes soulier Go Habs
I tried to post a couple times last night after the game but blogger said 'no', you've posted enough.
I just wanted to say it was a great game, lots of heroes and only one passenger who was thankfully benched in the 3rd. And Marty said after he didn't want to put a rusty Pez out late in the game. Smart coaching.
Yeah, Doobie looks impressive and yes he does remind you of a very young Carey Price, similar stature and all. The Habs may have uncovered a gem.
They're determined to get rid of that first pick. It doesn't matter as far as their first pick go, but get that too pick and a team like the Raiders or maybe the Giants even might give them a load of picks to trade up.
I just read the Fried Man's story on the Canucks Drama with Petterson and Miller. Quality investigative journalism with the conclusion that the Canucks will either: 1) trade one of them, or 2) trade both of them, or 3) trade neither of them.
I don't see Hughes having any interest in either of those players. First, JT Miller is poison and turning 32 with 6 more years on his deal so that's a no go. Second, Vancouver wants to compete now so they would want Nick to replace Elias and that ain't happening. Miller wants to go to NY anyway so I could see something between those two.
Hey, with a win tonight the Habs would take over the 2nd wild card spot.
Who knows what will happen, but my dream scenario (aside from winning the cup) is for the Habs to grab whichever playoff spot matches them against the wretched leaf and bounce them in the first round. That may cause the SFU to implode.
That was one of the best goals I ever saw scored in my life, including the Flower's to tie in '79 and Yvon Lambert's OT winner. Byron's was a shortie I believe.
During that series in 2021, whenever the Habs scored a goal the camera would immediately pan to matthews on the bench focussing on his hang dog face. I'll bet Weber, Chiarot and Edmundson enjoyed beating on him when he would venture occasionally to the net, which wasn't often.
ok M. ill grant your wish, but then i want the broons in R2 and then the flyers in R3 (i wanna see doobie exercise some vengence on behalf of king jaroslav)
moe - good luck to your Steelers. They simply have to beat Lamar Jackson, then Pat Mahomes, then Josh Allen for a chance to play for the Superbowl. No sweat.
So my Giants are standing pat with their GM and HC. They pick 3rd overall so I wonder if they will be able to move up and get their QB or take the BPA? I believe Tennessee would take a QB, not so sure about Cleveland who are already paying Watson large and also have Jamesis Winston as backup. Plus, there are some half decent FA QBs who will be available, maybe as a place holder?
Apparently the Lions OC is a hot commodity and on the Pats' request to interview list. The thing is when you have an offence with that many gifts, is it really down to coaching? Or is Johnson just in the right place at the right time? I still say the Pats look to Vrabel. Then he will hire Josh McDaniels as OC and Matt Patricia as DC lol.
Turned into a bit of a yawner after that start. Newhook missed a couple of nets from great spots. Quit trying for the 4"X4" corner and hit the net ffs.
Happy New Year FHFers! May your 2025 be healthy, happy and Habby.
ReplyDeleteWhat a way to end 2024!
Keep on rollin' boys.
I watched the 3rd period on the Canada/USA game last night, Hockey Canada sure messed up picking that team.

ReplyDeleteWOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteWoohoo. Loser point at worst!
ReplyDeleteIt's a tie in my book.
DeleteBig fucking point boys, well done.
ReplyDeletei know u guys hate galley, but he just did it again, eh? absolutely 100% correct call supporting the ref with this charging penalty on lekky
ReplyDeleteLot of holes in those sticks. Fanned on 3 or 4 one timers on that 4 on 3.
ReplyDeleteDoobie, you're my brother! On to the Shootout.
ReplyDeleteDoobie is a stud!
ReplyDeleteEven the extremely biased Avs guys are gushing about him.
Woohoo!
ReplyDeleteGYFHG! WHISKEY + DaCTor + Doobie, Brother!
ReplyDeleteNot a bad road trip, beating the past four cup winners.
ReplyDeleteAll on their rinks too. Outstanding!
DeleteWow.
ReplyDelete~~~
Guess which team is one point out of a wild card spot? Great win to finish a long road trip. This team is gelling! Get better soon, Wool!
ReplyDeleteAfter those four wins, the January schedule suddenly looks less daunting.
ReplyDeleteKeep 'er going lads!
Get Wool some chicken soup and keep him away from the fellas on the plane.
Ăccentuate the positive !
ReplyDelete~~~
Great win boys!
ReplyDeleteWatching the hilites of the Avalanche game Doobie tracks the puck like some kind of fiend.
ReplyDeleteJust watching him you get this sense that he is supremely dialed in and has the strength and flexibility of a young man like a younger Price
We should be careful with this one short sample yes but to CHester he looks like the real McCoy
And good on the boys for their road success probably some good bonding time as well
New years in Vegas doesn't hurt specially coming off some big wins
Now lets keep it going
Go Habs
Scobbie Doobie do. I cant recall a goalie hold his glove hand up the whole game. My worry is we wont be able to afford him. Sign him to the std 8 for 8 contract now.
ReplyDeleteWhiskey has to teach Cpt Hook how to raise the puck. The force is growing in DaCH.
On his first save in the shootout he flicked the puck at druid ala young Pricer
ReplyDeleteIt's like here, here's your puck, I don't need it anymore
HA! mange mes soulier
Go Habs
He does have that Roy-like swagger. Very impressive. I would even start his vs Vancouver on Monday.
DeleteI tried to post a couple times last night after the game but blogger said 'no', you've posted enough.
ReplyDeleteI just wanted to say it was a great game, lots of heroes and only one passenger who was thankfully benched in the 3rd. And Marty said after he didn't want to put a rusty Pez out late in the game. Smart coaching.
Yeah, Doobie looks impressive and yes he does remind you of a very young Carey Price, similar stature and all. The Habs may have uncovered a gem.
GO HABS!!!
R.I.P. Julien Poulin (aka Elvis Gratton)
ReplyDeleteFor the uninitiated: (pardon the lack of subtitles, but still relatable):
https://youtu.be/Cood3ZnRJk8?si=AwgJ0Gb2Yn0m3AoG
Some hilarious roles in his career.
DeleteRest in peace.

Come on New England try harder I want my pick back...
ReplyDeleteThey're determined to get rid of that first pick.
DeleteIt doesn't matter as far as their first pick go, but get that too pick and a team like the Raiders or maybe the Giants even might give them a load of picks to trade up.
*top pick
DeleteI think Cleveland locked up the #1 pick anyway.
DeleteThanks NE, I owe you one.
DeleteSemi expected the Bills and Steelers to peter out.
ReplyDelete~~~
Denver being up by 24, so far …
DeleteDidn't take long for the Pats to fire Mayo.
ReplyDeleteRumour has it Daboll is safe for another year, we'll see tomorrow I guess.
Yeah I think if Mike Vrabel wasn't knocking on the door, they would have given Mayo another year.
DeleteI just read the Fried Man's story on the Canucks Drama with Petterson and Miller.
ReplyDeleteQuality investigative journalism with the conclusion that the Canucks will either:
1) trade one of them, or
2) trade both of them, or
3) trade neither of them.
Fucking genius.
insidredger school of saying something meaning nothing.
DeleteSick Fůck United for a reason.
Delete~~~
I don't see Hughes having any interest in either of those players. First, JT Miller is poison and turning 32 with 6 more years on his deal so that's a no go. Second, Vancouver wants to compete now so they would want Nick to replace Elias and that ain't happening. Miller wants to go to NY anyway so I could see something between those two.
DeleteHey, with a win tonight the Habs would take over the 2nd wild card spot.
ReplyDeleteWho knows what will happen, but my dream scenario (aside from winning the cup) is for the Habs to grab whichever playoff spot matches them against the wretched leaf and bounce them in the first round. That may cause the SFU to implode.
According to the SFU 2021 never happened.
DeleteWas it 3-1? I believe it was. That Paul Byron photo is etched into my memory.
DeleteThat was one of the best goals I ever saw scored in my life, including the Flower's to tie in '79 and Yvon Lambert's OT winner. Byron's was a shortie I believe.
DeleteDuring that series in 2021, whenever the Habs scored a goal the camera would immediately pan to matthews on the bench focussing on his hang dog face.
Deletesorry. that was your wish St.P... but im also already assuming mr M prob endorses
Deletemoe - good luck to your Steelers.
ReplyDeleteThey simply have to beat Lamar Jackson, then Pat Mahomes, then Josh Allen for a chance to play for the Superbowl.
ReplyDeleteApparently the Lions OC is a hot commodity and on the Pats' request to interview list. The thing is when you have an offence with that many gifts, is it really down to coaching? Or is Johnson just in the right place at the right time?
DeleteI still say the Pats look to Vrabel. Then he will hire Josh McDaniels as OC and Matt Patricia as DC lol.
really looking fwd to the match tn, even if its impossible to get on amazon.
ReplyDeletethe latest rumours i hear is that they get back miller but have to give up
logan + owen + savard + 1R pick + 2R pick
for me, that is an absurd overpay. and between him and peterson, he is also definitely the wrong guy to take back.
Zero chance Hughes would make that deal. Miller only wants to go to an American team anyway.
DeleteG Y F H G !
ReplyDeleteRIP Maritimer Al MacNeil, 1971 Stanley Cup winning coach.
ReplyDeleteRumour out there that a new deal is coming for 7Evans, I was never worried Hughes was going to trade him. To valuable to the bottom 6 to let him go.
ReplyDeleteLFG!
ReplyDeleteWhiskey!
Whiskey!
ReplyDeleteWow, Ghoul demolishes a guy, then bam 1-0!
ReplyDeleteCredit to Slaf on a good play and pass.
Loving this heavy style of play. Don't let up boys
ReplyDeleteIt's a trap!
ReplyDeleteMaybe I'll get to go to bed early.
ReplyDeleteTurned into a bit of a yawner after that start.
ReplyDeleteNewhook missed a couple of nets from great spots. Quit trying for the 4"X4" corner and hit the net ffs.
Ghoul!
ReplyDeleteGuhle!
ReplyDeleteWell there...it's picked back up.
ReplyDeletehelp me bros!
ReplyDeletei live 6~7 stations away from the dt core and guess how many canook sweaters i saw on the way to my hab brother pub?
not sure if coincidence or if b/c its 1-3, now the pub has 6-3 outnumbering us. gimme petersson and ill climb down from the edge!
ReplyDeleteoh and i hate how monty allowed that second goal by mr cancer
They don't need Elias, when Demigod arrives next season you will forget all about that guy. And JT Poison will be on Broadway.
Deletei dont want cancerboy! i want mats2.0!
DeleteGreat interview with Alex Burrows, I forgot he scored some pretty important goals for the Canuckles.
ReplyDeleteDaCHtor!
ReplyDeleteDaCH !
ReplyDeleteDachter Dachter gimme the news...

ReplyDeleteFWIW, nice to see Juulsen playing.
ReplyDelete~~~
Also, fark aff with the early Olé
👍
Deletewhat!? what did i do?!?!
DeleteFast Lane putting on a show tonight.
ReplyDeleteSFU will ignore it.
Cole owes the team another goal for that dumb penalty.
ReplyDeletei was thinking that also, but too pussy to type it up
Deleteg-dammit!
ReplyDelete(but is this a SC preview rn?)
Very entertaining game so far. Almost playoff like...
