  26. I sorta watched some of the Canucklehead/leaf game last night, muted of course, and there was something I noticed. Both teams seemed more organized in their attack and defensive games. There were missed assignments here and there of course but overall there was much more structure than what I see watching the Canadiens. Their style is way more chaotic with no structure between the forwards and the D. Both of those teams last night had far better goaltending as well.

It seems that after the Habs lost that game to the putrid leaf on Hockey Day their play went off the rails. I'm starting to have doubts about the coaching and the talent level of this Montreal team. I doubt I will bother to watch this afternoon's hockey game, I'll make my chili and stick with golf.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Okay, all the right teams won yesterday (except this bunch, that can't score in two straight home games). It's gotta turn around since Tampa also played yesterday, winning decisively, and then had travel. Doobie in front of the home crowd and all the kids and families should not disappoint. I hope Beck is put at Centre today and Strobelight gets another chance.

Regardless, Everyone should be driven to put in a good effort after yesterday. Simplify the game, focus hard, and don't try making passes that aren't there. Fight to the teeth for every puck. Whether the playoffs are out of reach or not, today is a day for digging deep and giving Marty and your fans a full team effort, so they can say this Habs game was the best game they saw on Super Bowl Sunday. GYFHG!

I flip and flop on Marty and I feel bad doing it.
As a dedicated Habs fan I should always be all in.
For a young rebuilding team he was the guy.
Positive mentoring always talking explaining never negative or punishing.
I have no problem with him as a head coach or even the offence but I firmly believe that positive reinforcement and happy chats are not what a defence is all about.
I think we need a defensive coach to implement structure and physicality.
Defence doesn't have the ebb and flow of a fluid offence.
Defence is different and I don't think Marty has the tools to take us farther.
He has brought us this far but we need to take the next step and I hope Hugo sees that and I hope Martys feathers don't get ruffled.
    Go Habs

  63. From Brian Wilde ... makes sense...

The Canadiens have three futures, and they are all very distinct from each other at the moment. The immediate future is prepare for full sell action on their unrestricted free agents. Choices have to be made for Dvorak, Armia, Jake Evans and David Savard.

Popular consensus is Dvorak will not be given an offer by the club, Savard is expected to get a one-year offer, Evans will get a serious offer of three years, and Armia will get a serious offer as well. If the players reject their offers to hit the open market, then they will be traded.

  67. The Habs go 1-7-1 over the past 9 games for 3 points. Had they just played .500 hockey they would be tied in points for the 2nd wild card spot.
It's painful watching them the past couple of weeks. I just hope it's for the best in the long run and we see the results of the true 5 year rebuild before long. I plan to retire around June of 2027. A Stanley Cup for the Habs would be a hell of a retirement gift.

    1. I don't think I've watched a complete game since the leaf debacle. I either tuned in late or turned it off early. I can't watch my team get beat up all the time. Too demoralizing.

  68. I was looking at the Carey Price buyout option again. I had it wrong the first time. If they buy him out, his cap hit for 25/26 is still $9.1M and would be $667K for 26/27.
He is due a $5.5M bonus on July 1 and his base salary for 25/26 is only $2M.
What are the odds he leaves that $2M on the table and retires after July 1, which would remove the $10.5M cap for 25/26 since he signed his contract before the age of 35? Or is the approx $120M he's earned not quite enough? Easy to say from this chair, but $2M is still $2M. But hell, Molson could say "Hey Carey, if you retire I'll give you this contract to be a goalie advisor for $2M."

    ReplyDelete
  69. Based on current projections, the final wild card spot 'could' be had with 90/91 points.
For fun I went through the Habs' sked and without tabulating as I go, just assigned either zero, one or two points to each game (based on how they 'could' play, not on the past 2 weeks). My final tally was 34 more points for an 89 point season. This includes an impressive 7 game win streak in April. Had they just beaten Carolina in the final game, they could've squeaked in (in this totally fictional and definitely unlikely scenario). Around .500 hockey is more probable ending them near 80 points or so.

    ReplyDelete
  70. It's fun to play 'what if' but, based on the fact that all the teams between the Habs and a wild card spot play each other (someone has to win) and also that Montreal's players have no idea how to protect a lead, or even get one, I think they stay right where they're at.
One bit of news I read this morning suggested that when the fire sale begins HuGo are not looking for futures but NHL ready young players. It's more likely HuGo will be trading some of their many picks to get some high end talented help for the nearer future, like next season. Names like Zegras and Cozens were mentioned. I think that's the more likely scenario.

    Cheers All!

    ReplyDelete

    1. I read that too. It makes sense. 300 draft picks aren't going to do anything on the ice.

I'm not convinced about Doch or the hooker or even wool for that matter.
Don't know about TJ but wool and doch were flyers that Hugo took.
I mean at some point we gotta stand up and realize that if we want to be a serious contender we need serious players not reclaimation projects.
I think these people need to be read the riot act and if nothing transpires then adios mutherfucker. This is how you win. So now we dump and chase and if nothing transpires between now and tdl then fine summers coming and the draft.

So I don’t know what the plan is if there is one.
Couple three days off back to practice try and figure out why we can’t score defend or save pucks.
I think it would be good to try and figure some of that shit out.
I think the dachster is either traded or benched it’s enough.
I think TJ need to be told that he can skate fast so he should skate fast ffs.
I remember Lord Byron skating fast TJ doesn’t do that.
These were two of Hugo’s pet projects that I don’t think are working out.
    Anyway.
We watched an Eagles defense win the S bowl so we should be like the Eagles and get a real D and an effing D coach it’s enough.
    Go Habs

    ReplyDelete
  77. HuGo will give this team a little more time with a few tweaks here and there. Dach and Wool have one more season after this one, Hook has two to prove themselves. By then Gally and Pony will be finishing up as well. HuGo wants proven NHL talent and will probably swing for the fences in the UFA season. In the meantime, the beatings will continue until morale improves.

    ReplyDelete
  78. CHester9:49 PM

Well let’s take a who’s in approach as opposed to whose out
So the keepers are in no particular order
    Forwards
Suzi CC Slav Dach(?) TJ Wool Gally Powerhorse Sevens(?)
Need 3 to field 4 lines
    Defense
Maths Fast Lane AC Ax Goules
Need 1 to field 3 pairs
So maybe Sevens is gone and we need 4
And one D and we’re talking no reclaimed retred projects
    Five real hockey players…
So where are we gonna get that and that’s keeping Dach and then Powerhorse and gally are probably gone so that’s basically half your effin hockey team in two years
    We’re all going to die
    Go Habs

    1. I assume demigod and beck will be with the team. Is beck 2nd line C material? I see him more as a 3rd line guy but it's early. But basically, and assuming Slaf improves and stays on the first line, we need a new 2nd line. Demi +? +? I mean I wish I could say Wool would be the guy on that line but it's not looking good. Maybe put him with our best playmaker Suzuki and move Slaf to the 2nd line. So we need to find a legit #2C. J Roy will be given another shot unless he is traded in a package because Kent has said he wants to bring in players, not picks or prospects in any trade he makes. Harley2.0 in Laval is another interesting prospect. He's officially a C but I think he can play wing too. One of those late bloomers. Could be a good 3rd/4th line guy the following season if not next year.

I really think with the cap rising, Hughes (and probably most GMs) are looking at UFAs in a different light and the teams with deep pockets are looking at the big names that could be available and hoping they go to free agency. This rapidly rising cap is saying so long to parity in the league. I think it will ultimately be the death of some of the smaller franchises, so Bettman can put teams in Houston, KC, etc. I've gone off the rails. It's early. I haven't finished my coffee...

      Delete
    2. CHester10:40 AM

      OK
Pretty clear that the outstanding glaring need right now is for a bonified no 2 C.
OK Beck is coming and JRoy so that still leaves major holes in the offence.
Like an entire third line with the bulk of the offence comprised of kids. It's very clear we need another real late 20's something honest to goodness scoring winger unless Slav suddenly morphs into a scoring power winger.
I think my disappointment runs deep because of the failure of Dach and TJ. We blew some capital on them with not much results. If 2025 was sposed to be the year we compete I think Mr Hugo better roll his sleeves up and get some stuff done.
      Go Habs

sfu panel, I think they say they are Canadian, said that Weewillie and marner will/would shine as their best (biased) guess for best players tonight.

As we await the big snowstorm here, I have the game in the background. I like all Team Canadas, despite some villains and leaf. sn’s graphic for the tournament features Henderson and Sittler as the biggest images. Bigger than #66 and #99. Weird.

As a true Canadian, I’d punch mclame in the face for free and/or donate any/all funds to the Terry Fox foundation.

Massive ups for the Bell Centre crew. Great opening and fans are proving that the true centre of the smartest hockey universe is in Montréal. It isn’t even close.

Sounds like the Bell Centre dj is playing nothing but Canadian artists. 🇨🇦

Sid, still the best overall player in the game.

mclame is a moronic, narcissistic putrid clown but botterill is just a slice of wonderbread with nothing on it.

Will the sfu panel facts be beholden to nostrils or team Canada when that puck drops ?

I think this made for tv event is to give sn a chance for redemption with their rights to broadcast the games.

They have NOT grown the game and we know why.

Very interesting to hear cuthurtsimpleton comment on how the crowd is into the game, unlike the tronna morgue/library.

leaf media can suck marner all night long, they aren’t true Canadians or true fans of the game.

marner 2nd, yeah, nope, give it to MacKinnon.
marner is a good player but he is a narcissistic jerk.
sn has shat on the Habs and Montreal for the entirety of their NHL contract. Actually goes back further decades of pure hnic jealousy and hate.
Bell Centre fans never forget and know the game better than the clown 🤡 panel.

  99. The only hi-lite I watched was Mario's reception. Montreal fans are the best.
As it does, it got me wandering down the draft path of '84. Man he would have looked good in a Habs sweater.
But it was a decent draft year for the Habs grabbing Petr Svoboda and Shayne Corson in the first round and then grabbing Stephane Richer in the 2nd and Patty Roy in the 3rd.
It could have been even better as there were some great players taken later in that draft.
In the 6th round at 116th overall, the Habs select Jim Nesich. Next pick? Brett Hull.
Interesting that 2 players from this draft played exactly the same nubmer of games in their career at 1431. One of those players was Scott Mellanby who went in the 2nd round.
The other? Luc Robitaille, who went in the 9th round! 171st overall. Not to worry though, the Habs had picked up Brad McCaughey a few picks sooner.
    Just imagine...

It has been so long since the last time one of these things mattered that you may have forgotten what a real Canadian hockey crowd cheering for the real Team Canada sounds like. But Montreal remembers.

  102. Anonymous7:20 AM

The real genius pick for this team may have been the host city. In a fraught moment for international relations, Montrealers reminded everyone how you treat visitors.
They booed the Swedes upon introduction, but without much venom. Toronto Maple Leaf William Nylander in particular seemed delighted at his jeering. It must feel strange to finally play hockey games that matter.
The audience was selective when it came to the other team captains and legends of the game. Teemu Selanne? Nice cheer. Aleksander Barkov? Something between a cheer and a boo. Auston Matthews? A feral booing. A real oral pasting.
