  3. Kent Hughes did the right thing keeping these guys together. They might not get into the playoffs but it won't be for lack of trying. Great camaraderie with these players unlike the morbid leaf.

That scrap with AX last night was something else. It was strange how Middleton just left Anderson and bolted to Arber. A reporter said AX shouted "I'm over here if you need me". Invitation accepted ... and Middleton paid for it.

As for the supposed Cup contenders from the CotU, Nashville pumped 5 unanswered goals past "the best goalies in the league". Sure, how many times have we heard that before? mclame was so happy that the Habs game ran over into the Oilers game so he and his clown panel didn't have to talk about it, especially the ridiculous BizNasty. Suck it SFU!

  4. SFU just keep getting worse, if that's possible, by employing homer clowns like Bisonnette.
    They can fucking have him.

At least 90% of former players they hire either played for the leaf and/or are from the CotU.

I know the broadcaster owns the team, but it seems very short sighted to me to basically say fuck you to about 70% (I'm estimating) of your potential viewership. Seems like bad business sense. Shrug.

I’ve said it before, it’ll get worse before it gets better and it’ll never get better.

The sfu is a fuckíng desperate bunch
They can feel the upcoming playoff crunch
Their broadcast team is in desperate need
No leaf win and their numbers will bleed

  7. I did a deeper dive with the predict-o-meter and it looks pretty good for the Habs.
The Sens have a very easy schedule and will hang onto that first wildcard spot (assuming the Dolts don't slide down to it). I'm including the Sens, Habs, Rags, Isles and BJs in the race. The Dead Things and Pooh bears are out. All teams have 13 games remaining except the Rags have only 11.

The OG prediction had the Habs getting to 89 points, which would appear to be enough to get in. Since they've done better than expected since the break they currently sit at a predicted 94 points. I have the Sens getting to 95 points.
And it seems there is wiggle room as the next best point total is the Rangers with 87. Here's the breakdown:
    Team Current Predicted
    Sens 79 95
    Habs 75 94
    Rags 74 87
    Isles 73 85
    BJs 71 84

That said, I think the first wildcard would be much better. The Caps are the only team in the East that I see as a real threat. If it weren't for them, anybody could win. Except the leaf.

  8. Story on the leafs' latest bust of a deadline trade for Laughton (to be pronounced laff-ton), and one of the comments is a real gem:

It went right down to the wire at the deadline but luckily the Leafs were able to rid themselves of a top prospect and another pesky first round pick.

And the number of fans still supporting and rationalizing that trade is baffling, and yet not surprising, and just another reason why that shit team will never see success in the playoffs.

    1. I watched the no goal that would have won it for the Isles in regulation due to 'goalie interference'. Every time I see something like that I remember how this one was NOT interference https://youtu.be/2y_iW6NDb5s and if you watch it and can bare listening to Galley, note how he doesn't mention Carey Price being dragged to downtown Laval by the NYR skater even once.

I love what Patty Roy said after the game. "If Toronto is afraid to overturn calls made by the referees, we don't need Toronto." Preach brother!

I think tonight we have a good test of our focus.
We are the two top teams currently and we both have stuff on the line.
So we need a full four line three pair effort tonight.

  23. I only watched the 2nd period. I thought about taking a few shots at Monty but decided to go the Walt Disney route : "If you don't have anything nice to say, say nothing at all."
By the accounts of the game I have read, the Habs started very slow and what I saw in the 2nd period is the defence backing in constantly and Monty getting screened. Every goal I saw was a 40-50 footer that he whiffed on or was deflected. I think the book on Monty is high glove side.

Anyway, if the Isles win tonight they move into the wildcard spot so this is what we can expect for the rest of the season. Rotating between disappointment and elation. Fun times.

Lane Hutson now has 54 points in 70 games.

    - Most points by a rookie defenseman among all active NHL D-men.

    - Most points by a rookie defenseman since Nicklas Lidstrom in 1991-1992.

  28. The downturn in offensive production aside from the top line in general began when Heineken was hit by that car in Utah. Since then, that line specifically has been terrible offensively and average defensively where they were the clear top 4th line in the first half of the season.
    Hopefully they can get going.

Matheson was brutal last night. I hate that every time he sets up in the O zone and he gets the puck, his first option is always shoot (and usually into the shin pads of a defender) rather than pass to the wide open winger. Not to mention the giveaways.
But he won't sit when Ghoulie is back. So who? Savard should be the answer. Love the guy but is skating in quicksand these days.

Might be passive aggressive, but if I was a reporter with access to MSL I'd ask him if there is something concerning he's seen with the play of Dobes in practice to keep him from getting in the crease.

    2. hard disagree with mr qanon... maths isnt perfect, and in my books, he does somewhere above 51% of the things right.

i say this b/c his gaveaways are quite high, but he is a high risk, high reward type of defenseman. no different than dish, no different than PFK. there is a price to pay for these rare guys and part of responsible asset management is to pair him with a heavy wet blanket like chariot, or vodkov.

if u wanna find a scapegoat for all the bad math, look to the numbers from our starting keeper.

      Delete
    3. MnM is an enigma for sure. Some nights he looks great others he looks like Von Klumsy part deux. Ideally he would be on the 2nd pairing maybe lower. He is a great skater and if he plays within himself he is OK. Friend oleg is right, he is a bit of a gambler like Dish, not quite as risky as PFK was though. Unfortunately he is needed at the moment like Montyohno! Bite on the stick and enjoy the ride.

    4. Well, before the orange felon, backed by Russia and billionaires took over our neighbours to the south, we had a reasonable, friendly relationship. No system is perfect, but we had a trade agreement in place that the aforementioned FOTUS himself signed, which again while not perfect worked for industry and consumers. Could Canada have spent the last decades trying to be more self reliant? Perhaps. But it didn't NEED to because of a strong relationship with our neighbours. We have now learned that Canada NEEDS to work towards that goal while expanding its trade vision to other parts of the world. Hence the reason we are now seeing this uptick in patriotism. Just because we didn't do it before doesn't mean we shouldn't do it now. That's a terrible argument.

Your quoting of the xenophobic old crotch isn't scoring you any points. The fact is he was an intolerable, insufferable douchebag for decades and the only injustice is that he lasted as long as he did. He was a great fan of the white, English speaking hockey players. Period. And he sure loved to show his love for the Canadian military. But my father, a white, English speaking WW2 vet who lost friends while they stormed Juno beach on D-Day couldn't stand to listen to him almost from the first time he appeared on HNIC. And that was enough for me. And always will be.

Arresting people for writing op-eds or posting comments on-line. Attacking their neighbouring country by tearing up a legal document that the convict himself negotiated and signed. It's like I've fallen into a parallel universe like Kirk and the gang on Star Trek TOS. Sheer Insanity. 47. I try to stay positive about the guys on the team. Shitting on players isn't productive. But I've had concerns about the goaltending for awhile. I posted this at the end of last season.

And is our goaltending good enough? Primo/Monty were 41st/50th in GAA and 20th/38th in Save%.
Monty has his moments but is Primo the guy until Fowler is ready?
What about giving up on them and taking a shot at Laurent Brossoit? Sounds like he's from QC but isn't (he's from BC). 31 years old. Great numbers last year with a 2.00 GAA and .927 Save% with WPG.
Or big Anthony Stolarz with FLA. 2.02 and .925
Both of them gave up nearly one goal less per game than our guys. REalizing some of that is on the D, but not all. For a while, each of our guys it seemed were good for one stinker per game. It's like my golf game, gotta get rid of those from your game to move on up.

Doobie was a great story with his hot start. But he's cooled off.
And I try my best to give Monty the benefit of the doubt, but he does't make it easy. So aside from the 2nd goalie name changing, this concern still stands (except maybe the stinker per game ratio is more like 1.5 per game now).
I think we're 2 seasons from Fowler. I assume he'll do a year in Laval. So does this team run with the Mount Dubious duo next year? Does a healthy Guhlie and more offence make up for the oft average at best goaltending?

Oh well let's see how this season runs out and go from there. Despite the challenges on the back end, I still have hope in watching playoff hockey.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Both goaltenders are questionable. Montembohno runs hot an cold but has obvious weaknesses, shots from distance and glove side. Doobie is still young and learning.

The defence has issues, Matheson's gaffes, Savard lack of foot speed, AX still taking penalties at inopportune times. The other 3 are fine.

The 1st line, Nick is the only constant.
2nd line a mishmash, Wool can be an anchor.
      3rd line fairly consistent.
4th line lost their mojo can't seem to get it back.

For some reason they can't start a game properly, maybe they should just try to play to a draw at the start until they get their act together.
Not holding my breath for a playoff spot, they have accomplished their stated goal of being 'in da mix', at this time (late March) they are playing with house money.

  70. Brian Wilde is pumping Sid's tires pretty hard to come to the Habs. He makes the point that unless Sid has a no trade clause it's Dumbass who gets to decide if there is a trade or not. And I don't know why Boy Wonder wouldn't try to see what he would get to jumpstart a rebuild. I'm pretty sure the fanbase in Pitt wouldn't mind seeing their team get younger and better and Kent has a boatload of capital to offer.

Unless they turn things around very quickly I think the playoff dream is over. Caleb Desnoyer would be a nice consolation prize.

Beck, Mailloux and two 1st round picks should do it. Throw in Robidas.

    2. I think it takes the 2 firsts, Mailloux and a roster player. Dach is too risky so the Pens say no. I say they want Slaf in return. That would be a decision for Hughes to make.

      Delete
    3. I doubt they want CR (Claude Raines), Dubas would want Demigod which is a no go. I think the only way this goes down is if Sid tells Dubas I will only go to Montreal. So, they want a center back, picks and A list prospect. Here's my offer: 1st round 2025, 2nd round 2025, 3rd round 2025, Dach or Hook, WaWa. Take it or leave it.

I’d love to see this team currently assembled together make it.
The camaraderie and family aspect seems a part of them.
Should they make it, it will fuck over the sfu and leafool empty headed minds.

I wish I could post a link but you can probably find it on Facebook. Just another Friday night on the Miramichi eh Saint Paddy?

But I can tell you when I was in high school there wasn't a game between the two high schools from either side of the river that didn't end in fights in the stands and/or outside after the game. I may or may not have been in a couple of those altercations.

Pet had a vision for the country Lyn had a vison of America. Jean Chretien was just happy to keep the ship sailing with the sails trimmed. Justin propably drank too much koolaid but he was all about letting people live without prejudice. PP is about making Canada a 51st state, if not in legistation, in action.

We have to basically start over on the trade front and hope we can find some new customers who don't want to fuck us over. Gonna be a long haul.

I am all in for Wool in the 8 for 6 or less for 8. He is one dimensional but was not always so, I think he will improve. Same goes for Devo.( 180 turn on Devo, but hey he is good in the room, and underated on the ice ) Pencil him in for the 3 rd line and trade for a real 2 nd. I dont think we can afford Bennet and why would he leave Florida? I think we have to focus on Sids mother. Its to bad we did not push for Dylan Hollaway. When St lou offered 2.5 we should have gone for 3.5.

  112. 17 games since the break. While my game predictions were off a tad (why I don't often bet on sports), I had predicted a record of 8-5-4 for 20 points. They had a record of 9-4-4 for 22 points.
Initial projection was finishing with 89 points. New projection is 91 points. This is assuming the predicted 7-2 record in April.
87 points 'might' be enough to get the spot, but I would feel better about hitting 90 so a record of 6-2-1 would be good.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Good job on the projections, 90 points would probably do it. It seems one of the 5 teams will back their way into a wild card spot.
One of the francophone reporters was doing a similar projection and he pointed out that Minnesota got in one year with 87 and of course there was 2010 when chokula's Habs got in with 88 and proceeded to knock off Sid's Pens and Ovi's Caps with Jaro Halak playing out of his mind. Good memories from that run until they got Michael Leighton(ed), he shut them out 3 times in that conference final series.

      Delete
    2. Correction, that was Carey Price in goal that season.

      Delete
    3. OK, my memories are mixed up, it was Jaro who led that charge to the conference finals. That was when the debate was who was better TFS or Jaro. Gauthier traded Jaro for Lego after that run.

  113. As exciting as it's been riding in the Fast Lane with Hutson, I think what Captain Suzuki is doing is equally as impressive and important. In the past 30 years, the Habs have had one (1) player reach a ppg pace AND hit the top 20 in scoring. Alex Kovalev in 07/08 with 84 pts in 82 games. That's it. Turgeon and Damphousee did it in 94/95. For this young captain to be heading towards that goal on a team that isn't overly gifted in the offence department is quite spectacular in my mind. I'm just so impressed how he plays in all aspects of the game. He's so smart. Lost in last night's win was his Slick Nick behind the back pass to LH who set up Wool for that wicked one-timer.
As much as LH deserves the Calder, Suzuki deserves to be in the Selke conversation. Not saying he should or would win (I expect that to be Barkov), but he's top 3...top 5 at worst.
